- This video is the second part of my pledge for Me Made May, focusing on the plans I've made for my fabric scraps. I always try to make a plan that is particularly meaningful to me. This year, I'm pledging to reduce my scraps by half and to evaluate my dream wardrobe. You can find the video where I talk about my wardrobe evaluation here: • Me Made May 2024 - Pla...

What a lot of great ideas! I'm looking forward to all of them, but would particularly like to see the sweatshirt. Valerie's was gorgeous, but I couldn't quite wrap my head around how she did it and would love to see more details! It all makes me look at my scraps in a new light
Valerie is actually in the process of making a tutorial about how to do the hoodie. I might hold off on making mine until I see her video. I'm sure she's got some great tips!
Scraptacular!
Absolutely! 😁😁
Theresa, I am loving your ideas and cannot wait to see the prints for your wall especially. I have " re drawn" lines on the Tammy Handmade Naya Tee (Knit) and the Cashmerette Cedar Dolman (Woven) tops. I found the process very interesting and ended up with some nice casual makes. I feel some can be a bit "hit and miss" in terms of wearing out but they are also great for house wear and / or PJ's.
Another thing I have done is to piece small pieces of jersey together and make some cloths for cleaning with, instead of buying disposable ones. I keep a batch of clean ones in the kitchen and bathrooms and once they are used I place them in a closed bin in the utility with bleach in it. Once every couple of weeks I run them all through the machine normally after washing bath mats. It has used a good bit of scrap items and also saved me using disposable ones.
Looking forward to following your progress. X
I think if we're using scraps, it's not such a risk if you get a miss now and then. And I totally agree, if you can still wear them at home, that works for me.
I do actually plan to try and make some reusable towels, as I feel like we go through way too many paper towels. I didn't include it in my plans because I don't quite have the full vision yet, but I'm hoping to squeeze that in this month, as well.
4 bins?!?!? Girl that’s a drop in the bucket 😂. 😂😂. Great ideas
Hahaha, well, we all have our own storage/limits. I've been worse before but am trying my best to keep on top of it. Sometimes I do better than others...
I preferred the orange neutral with the 4 blue scraps for the top. Really popped out. Happy sewing and scrap busting. 👍
I totally agree! It was much more obvious when I was editing the film footage. That is definitely the one I'll use, if I need some extra fabric.
What a great video! So good to encourage people to be creative with supplies they already have.
Thank you! I hate the idea of these beautiful fabrics going to waste.
Love your gilet! Such great plans! I know you got this! They’re “scrappy” makes but you’ll make them look so intentional and your fabrics are lovely! That Sinclair hoodie has gone on the list!!!
Thanks, Rachel! It does feel like quite ambitious, having not done a ton of it before. I'm choosing to look at it as a fun way to experiment with low risk. They are scraps after all, right?
Nice one Theresa. Some great ideas for using scraps of which I have lots! I’m just about to move craft rooms resulting in a bigger, more practical space eventually. Before I start sewing in the new space I plan to sort out all my fabrics and all my scraps. That way I’ll know what I’ve got and, can decide, realistically, what I will use. You’ve given me some great ideas for possibilities and also a reminder - don’t just store my scraps and forget them! 👍. Thank you 🤗
I hope you have a go with using some of them up. They can definitely build and build really easily. The more you have though, the more likely you've got some fun combinations that you didn't even realize!
Hi Theresa. What fun -- I love all the creative combos and shapes. The night and day top made me think of a diagonal line with night fabrics on the bottom and day fabrics on the top for the front (aka dawn) and night fabrics on the top with day fabrics on the bottom for the back (aka dusk), maybe with a narrow stripe of the new neutral (dusky orange or olive-y green) along the diagonal seam. It's going to be a playful, high enjoyment month, Antonia
Ooh, that is a super fun idea! I'm going to have to play around depending on what size these scraps are, but I'm feeling very inspired by that one.
Thank you for the kind words about my channel!! I can't wait to see your sweatshirt when you finish it! We can be twins 👯 Also, I love that color block tshirt inspo pic, the yellow and white one, I think I may give that a try!
Totally delighted to be twinning with you, Valerie! I hope some more people discover your channel. It's one of my faves! 😘
Can’t wait to see your wall hangings!😊 They had some beautiful wall hangings inside at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park.😎
Oh, nice! I look forward to going there one day. I'm most of the way through my first wall hanging, and I'm absolutely loving it. I had plans for two, but I'm not sure I'm going to stop there... 😉
Can’t wait to see them!😊
Theresa, you've blown my mind, I'm very inspired by your wall art ideas. Fabulous vlog.
You are so sweet, Annette! Let's see how it all comes together.. 😉
These projects sound amazing. I can't wait to see them emerge 😃
Thank you! I feel like my creative juices are really flowing this month!
I love your ideas Theresa. They sound such fun. I love the ideas they have @threadandsprout. Really looking forward to seeing your makes. You have such an amazing imagination
Thank you so much! And yes, thread and sprout have some gorgeous pieced garments. They were very inspirational!
Great variety of projects Theresa. I love the idea of a bauhaus inspired wall hanging, and the Korean ones you showed pictures of are beautiful, they look like stained glass
Aren't those Korean wall hangings and curtains incredible? They really do look like stained glass. Mine will not be exactly the same, but I'm still excited to see what I can put together.
@@LostMyThread so gorgoeus. Looking forward to see how they inspire your finished piece
Wow! The wallhangings are such a fun idea.
Thanks! I feel like we should make the most of our gorgeous fabrics. It'll make me so happy to be surrounded by them!
Very inspiring video! Having settled in with your color story really makes it easier to put scraps together harmoniously. I can’t wait to see how many of your ideas you are able to complete in the month of may. Very cool ideas, you really put a lot of thought and effort into your plans and ideas and the finished garments….🤩. Good luck!
Absolutely, having fabrics that already work together make it all so much simpler. Of course, I'm being incredibly optimistic about this month, but most of my ideas should be fairly straightforward. 🤞
Inspired to get sorting my embarrassing amount of scraps 🙌🧡
Go for it! You never know what you're going to find in there! Just start pairing pieces together, and remember that they're scraps. They're not being used, so there's really no risk!
I can't wait to see how these turn out. One of my potential uses for woven scraps is as an inset in a knit top. I pinned a RTW shirt a while back that was just a basic t-shirt style, but then there is a rectangle cut from the bottom up into the bodice...8 -10 inches maybe? and slightly off center. It looks like they then slightly gathered a piece of a drapey woven (some sort of chiffon in this case) and inset it. I think it might be a bit tricky figuring out how to do it neatly, but I think the end result gives a very cool elevated look to a basic t-shirt pattern. I figure I'll play with the inset on several scraps first. Most of my scraps are smaller, so this seems like an interesting project to tackle.
Oh wow, that is such a cool concept. I'm not sure that I'm entirely picturing it correctly. Are you on Instagram? Have you shared any photos? I would love to see how it looks. Very intriguing!
I think you might like the Breezy Blouse by Liesl & Co. It’s really a fitted woven top but it has side panels so main pieces are smaller and options for different fabrics with the side panels etc. And the pattern comes with many different bust cups which for me is a big win. Think it’s my best fitting to ever
I've just had a look and completely agree. I like the side panel option for color blocking, etc. I've spent too much time getting the fit of the Ashton Top right, but I'll remember it for the future. Thanks for the recommendation!
I so in joy your videos, you always come up with the most creative ideas, I love your ideas for using scrap fabric.
Thanks! I feel like we have to get creative if we're trying to work through scraps.
I love your colour block ideas, I really enjoy pairing fabrics and would love to patchwork more so lots of ideas thank you!😊
That's so nice to hear, thank you! It should be a fun month.
You have some great projects planned. I not only make clothes but I am also a quilter. Some things I use garment sewing scraps for is making bias binding to finish off seams of fabrics that fray. I also use scraps for the parts of pockets you do not see.
Yes, those are great uses! I've definitely used my scraps for those, too. It's so satisfying to be able to use up those smaller bits!
Looking forward to see your finished projects!
Thank you, I'm curious to see what I can manage this month!
Oh I absolutely loved all your plans! I think I will do a scrappy ity tee with that Sinclair pattern. I think I have that one.
It's a great pattern! I definitely recommend having a play. Those scraps aren't getting used anyway, right?
Wow! Love all of your plans. I’m most excited to see your wall art. I think the whole process will be fun and unique. Sending best wishes from Down Under 💐🥰🇦🇺
Awesome! I really have such hopes for the wall hangings. It does feel like something outside of my comfort zone, but I think if I'm not being overly perfectionist about it, I'll be happy with whatever I end up making!
Whoa, you're going to be busy 😊. I especially can't wait to see your wall hangings; I have two wall hanging ideas floating in my head as well.
Happy "scrap-busting" ❕
Oh, cool! Our fabric is so beautiful, why shouldn't we make it art?
And I know, I'm being ridiculously ambitious. I won't hold myself to it, though. It's more just an aspiration. 😉
Can't wati to see how they turn out!!! Great ideas.
Thanks! I feel like they'll be fun projects to work on and wear!
Have you seen the bathrobe by 'Shannon makes'? Perhaps named as Hobbit... Bilbo... Fascinating, beautiful and uses a lot of scraps.
No, but that sounds incredibly fun. I'll have to do some investigating to see if I can find it.
Indeed, this was very inspiring!
That's so nice to hear, thank you!
Really inspiring stuff, I’ve been wanting to make the Athina Top by Tessuti as a nursing-friendly top, so am planning to add princess-style design lines which will then contain invisible zippers. I feel like playing with scraps would be a great way for me to make several such tops without getting bored of the pattern. Thank you for the inspiration!
Oh, that sounds like a great idea! I've been really impressed when I've seen nursing tops with princess seams. So clever!
That quilted fabric is going to make a beautiful bag 🤩
It feels like it was meant to be!
Brilliant colour block plans.
Thanks! I'm excited to see some of these come together.
You are so inspiring, thank you! I am making a little zippered pouch with English Paper Piecing (3/4” hexagons) using itty bitty scraps as I get up the courage to make the Tessuti Apron with leftovers of linens and/or the Hinterland dress. I’m also knitting a colourwork cape/shrug with leftover Alafoss lopi (some scraps are 30 years old). I’m looking forward to seeing everything you make. Happy making!
It sounds like you have such great ideas, you don't even need inspiration! I would love to do some English paper piecing one day, but that's got to be an eventual goal. No handsewing for me at the moment.
I love the idea of using knitting scraps. Once I'm back on the knitting course, I definitely need to look at some projects for them.
I am inspired to work through my scraps. I’m starting with the helens closet orbit bag. I checked out the BF besties bag as well. Love your choices and ideas. I love the idea of making wall hangings!!
The orbit bag looks so cute. I hope you have fun putting it together. I'm sure I'll end up making one eventually. 😉 And yes, our fabrics are a work of art and deserve to be displayed that way!
I enjoyed your video. You have such fun plans for your scraps. I used the Page pattern to make a couple of colorblocked sweatshirts with scrap French Terry. It’s a great pattern for that.
Oh, that is so helpful to hear! I'm looking forward to seeing some of these come together. I think it should be a fun month.
Have you seen the new Helen's Closet Orbit bag? It's a very cute patchwork bag that would be perfect for scrap busting. Thanks for the ideas Theresa.
Yes, it came out right after I filmed this video. Love it! We'll see what scraps I end up after this month, but I have a feeling that the Orbit bag will end up on my list at some point. 😉
So fun to hear about your plans. I wonder what you'll work on first? Can't wait to find out. Summer tops would be to fun things to work on. I an thinking about some of my oddball scraps now.
I'm honestly overloaded with ideas. I'm not sure, myself! 😆 I recommend playing around with different scraps and pairing them together, laying them on top of each other. You might find some fun combinations!
all fabulous ideas!
Thank you! I will be feeling so much better if I can make a little progress on these. With each project, the guilt of my scraps grows! Wish me luck.
Such great ideas! I have a ton of scraps for knits and wovens so I'm excited to see what you come up with that I can copy later. :D
Haha, always happy to be the guinea pig! 😉
❤❤❤❤
Check out Wilbour the waste free whale pattern for tiny scraps - he's made out of scraps and stuffed with tinier scraps 😊
Oh my goodness, that sounds so stinking adorable. I will be checking it out!
Those two neutrals you purchased are the key to the success of your well chosen scraps. I’m excited to see some completed projects.
Thank you, I think I picked some good ones. And if I have any of those leftover.... I'm confident they'll be easily used in my wardrobe!
I should really start doing that. I have a ton of scraps and clothes for upcycling. Unfortunately, while I can sew, I'm not the most creative person 😅
The good thing about scraps is that they're just sitting around not being used anyway, so they're a low risk thing to play with. I say go for it. You never know!
Great ideas 😊
Thank you so much!
You have a lot to work with!
I tell you, it doesn't always feel that way, especially with scraps. Spending the time and trying to sort through my scraps and pair bits together really helped me to see what I had.
Your scrap baskets look so much more organized than mine…do you have a video on how you go from the straggly cut-outs after cutting a pattern, to your neat bundles? Do you trim off the straggly bits? Do you use a folding board so everything ends up the same size? So impressed!!!
Oh, they're not as perfectly aligned as they look at quick glance on a camera. I do tend to trim off the very skinny scraggly pieces, but inevitably you still end up with some longer strips. Sometimes if I have one really long bit I might cut it from the rest of the fabric and fold them up together.
I don't have a video, but basically I just lay the fabric out and start folding it in one direction until it seems about the width of my basket. I then just fold in the other direction approximately the height of my basket making sure that there's a flat bit rather than a scraggly bit on the outside. Like I said, it is not as precise as it probably looks. I hope that makes sense!
So many fantastic ideas and scraps. I think a patch work kangaroo pocket would look amazing 🤩
Thank you so much! That's a super cute addition and highlights the beautiful patchwork on the sleeves. Great suggestion!
I haven't been sewing long, so I don't have a ton of scraps yet, but I'm definitely starting a collection of them. Last fall, I made a placemat set for a friend using some really pretty batik jelly roll strips, and I still have a decent amount of those left, both whole strips and pieces. I got the idea not long ago to patchwork them together to make a hat, so that's been put on my to-do list.
I love what you're doing for May, and of the ideas for the shirt you were showing, I liked the striped idea best. I think those fabrics look so good together. All the combos were good, but that one just spoke to me.
The Costa tote idea is so cute. I've made two of those now, and it's such a nice tote.
Cannot wait to see the wall hangings!
The scraps, they just keep on coming. I think if you can try and work through them as they come, it's less overwhelming. That or just end up with a huge blitz like me. 😆
So fun! I love the groupings of scraps you've made. The wine/mauve stripe and print is especially nice, and the daytime/night-time forest concept is super cute.
The chilly British weather and I both vote for the hoodie to come first 😄
I also vote in favour of the kangaroo pocket, being both Australian and very fond of pockets 🦘
I'm so glad that you mentioned those particular fabric pairings because they were the ones that I felt like were perhaps a bit out there. I think they will really work, but I don't think they are the most typical combos.
And I appreciate your love of the pocket.
🦘 🇦🇺😉
Bon courage c'est une très bonne idée, je vais essayer de faire la même chose moi aussi ❤
Thank you! I hope you have a lot of success, yourself!
These sound like fun projects! Enjoy the process. I cannot wait to see what you complete from your scraps.
Thanks! It feels like the race is on now that May has started! 😉
Love your color combinations Teresa...It's going to be super fun to see your makes. Love your inspiration too of finding a basic pattern that fits and then going for it. xx Karen
Thanks, I feel like it feels less risky to at least start with a pattern that I know I like, if the concept is a bit out there. I have so many beautiful scraps. I don't want them to go to waste!
So fun, Theresa! I can't wait to see all your cool plans come together. 💙
Thank you, Tamsyn! I feel like I'll have fun, whatever happens. 😉
Great plan! I reached 1K today! 😅
Exciting! Congratulations, and keep up the good work!
Wow your plans are so creative can’t wait to see how you get on and would love to see the process of piecing together the wall hangings ❤
Thank you so much! I feel like once my creative brain gets started, I get really carried away. I'm glad to hear that you are interested in the process of the wall hangings. I'm really hoping that they turn out how I envision!
Fabulous video as always. I love working with fabric scraps/remnants. They always sparkle my creativity more.
BTW if you are looking for a pattern good for colour blocking and using smaller remnants have a look at Cosy pouch by Incomplete stiches.
I feel like I need to remember my scraps more often. I'm working on that this year. I will definitely take a look at that pouch pattern. It sounds perfect, thank you!
Very inspirational video. You have some very creative projects planned.
Thanks! Now let's see what I can manage to get done.. 😉
So creative really inspiring. I have the nest sweatshirt pattern, I would really like to try that patchwork look soon.
It's great when there are patterns that are intentionally designed to use up those scraps. It's so satisfying!
You have a good eye for color coordination! I love all of the combos. Have you seen the new Orbit bag from Helen's Closet? I can totally see one made from the leftover quilted - circles on circles!
Thank you so much! It took a lot of playing around, but I'm happy with what I've put together. I have seen that bag, it came out just after I filmed this video. It's super cute. I feel like it's probably going to have to happen one day... 😉
Have you looked at matchy matchy sewing club patterns? They are all designed to use scraps.
Yes! They were very much in my list of inspiration. Their design style and silhouettes aren't particularly in my style, but I very much love the vibe with the scraps.
OMG this was SO inspiring! 🤩
So happy to hear! I hope you try some of these ideas out.
@@LostMyThread most definitely will 😀
Therese - thanks for another inspirational vlog! Quick question - when piecing fabrics together do you need to pay attention to the grain line? Thanks, Alison
So glad it inspired you! I would say that you do want to stick to either the grain or the cross grain when piecing things together. Otherwise they might hang differently, and warp out of shape. If you were making something with very tiny pieces, like a quilt with pieces less than 2" big, you'd probably not have to worry so much. With garments though, I'd be more cautious.
Just lovely. How many yards in a meter?
A yard is slightly smaller than a meter. Apparently 1 meter is 1.09 yards. Most things that take a meter of fabric are fine for a yard. I'd definitely say that for the two top patterns I spoke of.
Busy woman
Haha, at least in my brain, I'm getting it all done... 😉
