  • Bait tank for holding healthy baitfish for musky and flathead catfish is often not an easy task. The bio filter is the heart of the tank and after having this bait tank for 1 entire year I go over what I have changed about the bait tank and bio filter. Thanks for watching

    Nice setup u need to upgrade your pump to 950 to 1000 to get the 4 times per hour rule for pumping water. I have my tank for bluegill and I only had a 650 gph pump now I’m doing 985 gph and it’s nuts how much my fish r calm and waiting to be bait they don’t pump walls or anything just a friendly tip bud. But love the setup

      @@HumminbirdHelp the only thing I'll have to do different is add a small fish tank heater to stop it from freezing during the winter, its gets well below zero in my garage late jan-early march, sometimes down to ~40F below.
      Do you think the water moves/circulates enough that it wont freeze?
      Just FYI you have the best permanent set up on youtube, Ive scoured this site for everything diy and yours by far is the best and easiest setup around that is consistent and works very well. thanks again. #tightlines

      Thanks bud, I really appreciate it. I've messed around with alot of bait tanks and this has been by far my favorite. I think it has enough moving water to where it wont freeze but a small heater wouldnt hurt. If so I would take a bucket of bait out before fishing with a bubbler and let them get to regular temp before fishing. If not they can stress and shock and die from the temp change

    Awesome video thank you for saving me alot of money. I have a question have you tried to run the PVC pipe around the tank with holes in it to oxygenate the water that way? Will it work for this setup. I am wanting to keep skipjack, shad ect. Thank you again

      Yes I have on other smaller tanks but haven't needed it yet with this many gallons. I ussually don't have more than 50 baits in the tank

    I just made one. My bait tank is outside though. The water is starting to turn green. It is in the sun a bit of the day. Any ideas on how to control the water from turning green??

      Algaefix will do the trick. You can get it on amazon for like $25.

    if i add a gallon of pond water to my bait tank when i add my wild shiners, will that introduce the bacteria i need?

    • @HumminbirdHelp
      @HumminbirdHelp  Před 3 lety

      The water itself actually holds little bacteria. It's the things in the water that actually hold it like rocks r structure within the pond

    Does it smell up the whole house? Thinking about putting one in my basement as well.

    • @HumminbirdHelp
      @HumminbirdHelp  Před 3 lety

      I've never smelled it unless I neglect to check it every few days to make sure none died.

    Do you need light for the tank?

    • @HumminbirdHelp
      @HumminbirdHelp  Před 3 lety

      My basement light r ussually on durring the day but no real light is needed unless you are want live plants in the water with the bait for added oxygen

    How do you get the filter socks to stay on the pipes?

    • @HumminbirdHelp
      @HumminbirdHelp  Před rokem +1

      I use a piece of wire but I have used fishing line in the past with a screw driller at the bend on the 90 degree fitting to make a hanger

    How soon can you put fish in it?

    • @HumminbirdHelp
      @HumminbirdHelp  Před 3 lety

      Around a month it takes for the good bacteria to get accumulated
