As someone who had to have a toe nail removed surgically, for one it hurts like nothing you will ever believe (even through 3 shots of Novocain).
1. It does grow back but it takes forever (took about a full year until it was grown back fully for me)
2. When it grows back it doesn’t grow right and is like all rough in texture (atleast for me, but i also had the entire root removed aswell and like kaya said that shit goes fucking deep)
3. The hard layer is totally normal and happens even when your entire nail and root are removed.
Moral of the story, take care of your feet! don’t have to have diabetes to have to have them removed like that, a simple ingrown toe nail can be a cause.

I have had multiple issues with my nails before, the root of the nail does grow out from the bottom, but it's actually a small piece that can be completely removed, and the nail will not grow back.

I actually lost my hole toe nail last year, a Percheron horse with studded horseshoes stepped on my foot and popped the nail out, root and all. It's almost grown back now. I forgot that I kept the old nail in a drawer, and tossed it in the air in surprise when I pulled it out, when I was cleaning out my drawers a month ago lol

One time I was playing soccer with flip flops, a great idea I know. I go for the ball and so does my friend. He accidentally kicks it into my big toe. The end half of it bent completely backward and turned black after a couple days or so. It was so painful 2/10 wouldn't recommend, but the colors were neat.
My big toenail got kicked completely off at one point, but I guess it was kind of softened up after a bike stunt went wrong and I jacked up my whole leg after landing on it wrong so ur pain might have been worse
