How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
With all that rust it could have been used at a fertilizer plant for loading the mixer!
Salesman said it was at a Co-op in town, it did see some fertilizer
"Some" ya that's what they all say. Any is too much, stuff gets in every orifice you can imagine
@@HowFarmsWork I think it saw ALL the fertilizer...
I would lift the cab on it and check all the fittings. I’ve had to deal with stuff like that and it is not fun.

Your money your decision at the end of the day.. Great vid Ryan thanks for sharing..
Jcb is so much easier to get into and no other brand comes close to visibility of it. We love it !!
The rust can be from salt, fertilizer or some other corrosive material. And which case if any of it gets in the electronics your machine can go bezerks. I recommend a Kubota.
We used that New Holland t8.410 smart trax on a 24 row planter and 1000 bushel grain cart! What a coincidence seeing it again in your video.👍🏼
JCB skidsteers are very good machines, my uncle runs a road repair company and runs two of them. Jcb parts can be pricey on par with john deere but are very reliable, jcb's have been around for a long time and with that you get experience.
Joesph Williams I’m from Australia we have a loadall telihander and it very reliable but parts are expensive! But the dealer is also very good!
See is you can get a Kubota. They make the best skid steers. Best door design, highest speed, and most comfortable cab.
When I worked with Roeder Bros for buying a 7616 tractor, they were easy and good to work with... during and even well after the sale. Even for being 600 miles away from where I live, I would buy another machine from them!
Good luck on your shopping adventures! Maybe keep an eye on a front end loader tractor... skidsteer or not, you'll have to try to knock down the price or throw in some parts and such.
Nice video thanks for taken us along for the ride have a great weekend
Love our s570. It seems to handle more then it's rating for the smaller frame machine
just picked up a 2013 t590 with 945hrs for $25,000,deals are out there.and bonus to this machine,i put almost half the hrs on it as i rentd it a bunch and it was being upgraded.
Jcbs are really handy with side exit and are solid and easy to work on for a skidsteer
Looks like a snow machine. With the machines I’ve ran that’s where all the rust forms with winter work. Stay away from snow machines. There’s a reason most people lease them just for winter
It either was used at a fertilizer plant or at at road salt depot. I worked at a fertilizer mixing plant and our skid loader was five years old and it barely had more rust than that one has. They must not have washed it much.
We just got a JCB 3CX 15 super (backhoe) and we have had a couple problems with it but they came out and fixed it right away it is a brand new unit.
Negotiate even on low prices. That loader may have been parked in a pond. Also get maintenance records if you can. That was probably used for winter plowing
Yep, I thought I saw a waterline in one place. Too young to be that rusty.
Good luck on your search. It will sure be a workhorse when you find it.
Test drive that JCB, the telescoping boom seems like a really nice feature
JCB is quality but quality costs more looking at machines Ryan is looking for it seems money comes before quality otherwise JCB should be his first choice
Farming Guy JCB, quality? Ha...
if memory serves right it is the same radio we have in our skid loader the top and bottom buttons are the volum you needed to hold it down
Excellent video! The baby bobcat looks like a Ertl toy next to the other Bobcats.
Love the videos keep up the good work
That JCB is sweet.
If you can, try to get a kubota demo unit. That'll give you a good idea of what they can do. They're beasts!
Wonderful video Rian!!!!
Thanks!
JCB is noticeably easier to be in getting in and out multiple times a day and has a really spacious cab, once you run one for a while the visibility is noticeably better. The one I used to run has 8000 hours and counting and it was on a paving crew.
You’ll like the kubota for it’s elbow room in the cab. But not much else
My s650 has the kubota engine and no fancy electronic gaugues in it.... its also only a single speed. Your Bobcat prices there in the states are sure a lot cheaper than here.
im looking at the kubota ssv's and svl wich ssv 65 has a with $2,000 instant rebate and ssv 75 with $2,300 cash instant rebate plus extra $1,050 discount and SVL65-2 instant cash rebate of $2,200 and SVL 75 $2,700 instant cash rebate and svl95 has $3,000 cash instant rebate plus extra $1,050 discounts wich pretty good money saving
On used machines if used in construction anything over 2500 hrs is worn out. Tip the cab up and look for leaks and make sure the ac works especially bobcat. Ran T770 that all kinds of problems started at 2500 hours. Nice machine to run but didnt do much more than a T300. If there is anyway to swing it you would absolutely love tracks in the feedlot. Have great fun shopping.
Same here..after 2200-2500 hours it had to have a major overhaul on the hydraulic system, but other than that and buying new tracks, it performed well
cool video, nice to see whats out there!
The s70 looks like it will very much give you a nice turning circle
I bet you its stronger than all the rest 🙄😂
I personally recommend Lano Equipment and Farm-rite in Minnesota. Have rented and used dozens of skids from both places.
Never had an opinion on jcb until a buddy got a 5 ton mini excavator and a skidsteer. Sorry cant remember model numbers. But this kid is not easy on equipment at all! His excavator outlasted a cat he owned as well. And his skidsteer is still running strong
0:17 love the sound of that duramax
You keep repeating the list price, negotiation is a must!
my dealer has a svl75-2 a 75.2hp with bucket and forks $48,000 brand new 0% 84 months oac
Ryan take your time man .
looks cold up there Ryan nice truck by the way
I've driven the JCB one-boom machines, they are amazing! Well worth considering
As casual observer, I would be concerned about weight balance - Worried about side roll-over. Are they counter-weighted on the non-arm side? If so, then they seem pretty cool!
@@steveholton4130 That was my concern, but the weight still sits middle-centre with a properly loaded bucket or forks, same as it does for a two-arm machine. Load one side of bucket and the machine leans to that side, same as any bobcat. So no counter-weight needed, just great design keeps it steady and stable. I just wish I could afford one for myself! :)
From watching other utube channels buy Japanese skid steers is the best way to go,due to the fact that they tougher and don’t break down as much.
The JCB was nice.
Dousan motors are hard starting and gel up in the cold weather. Even running #1 fuel, do not add antigel it makes it worse
Another great video.
Unit from reputable dealership should be better option than auction options, gamble chance. Thanks for sharing the journey.
love your videos
Good video Ryan
I just like all the Massey Ferguson stuff in that yard
I've worked on a few different kinds of skids loaders and I'd say Gehl is probably the best I've been around. Easier to work on most of there models but certain ones have there flaws too. I'm not a huge fan of the Deere's and Bobcats but a lot of people like to run Bobcat. Whatever has the best parts availability and places to work on them is a good way to go.
Thanks for the Oreillys plug I’m a asst mgr at one in Hudson New Hampshire
Lol , I'm a route driver at DC 26
I hate shopping! Sometimes it is hard to wait and let it come to you.
TELE SKID!!! TELE SKID!!! Hahaha those machines look cool. We only have NH machines.
Wish you would test drive A tell-handler , see how you can steer either end, crab walk & the shortness of turning, plus the reach. Driven both, you be surprised .
Talk em into letting you get a weeks or 20 hours of run time in one at your farm.
Nice video! Haha the guy in the background xD 9:16
I have ran Cat, Deere, Bobcat and Case. Bobcat is the last one I would buy. My choice is between the Cat and Case.
Should've swung by our place! Pretty close
Ryan, see if you can find a kubota SSV65 or SSV75. You'll like the way the front windows go up over head and not swing out. You'll find that you will have alot of electrical problems with the Bobcat and JCB.
As an English man if JCB doesn’t give you a free skid steer loader they are missing a huge opportunity to promote their brand to young Americans
Looks like it was an old fertilizer loading machine to me. Pretty classic signs.
Visiting Skid-row.
Good video sod buster
They probably stored it in a shipping container high moisture during weather changes.
JCB are good machines not sure about their skid steers haven't seen many of them but their shovels, teleporters and diggers good machines. In Ireland and the UK 80 percent of the silage videos you'll see will have a JCB on the silage clamp pushing grass and they get a lot of hard work. To be fair they are starting to loose ground to Volvo on the clamp in recent years.
On Facebook, look up "Hay Kings: Classifieds". There is a guy in WY who has a one owner S650, 1400ish hours, in immaculate condition, for around that money. I know it's a drive, but you would be buying as new of a used machine as you would ever find. If you want his more detailed information, PM me.
An informed buyer is a smart buyer. You will find what you need, I think, but it might not be exactly what you were expecting. It seems that an equipment purchase is much more of a marathon than a sprint, and that's okay. Thanks for taking us all along.
Loved the liver stream keep em going please
JCB ,tempting
Love the video as always. You really should try and track down a kubota ssv heard a lot of good things about them
Um yes get the JCB extending boom. I'm sure it would be worth it in the long run.
I would think it was moving fertilizer and the rust will only get worse
Skid scouting... man that can go bad soooo easy.
I’d say it was used to move fertilizer
Ryan you gotta get a center cap for the passenger back hub on your truck
yup prolly a snow plowing machine, allot of salt would explain the rust. good luck, thanks for posting
JCBs are for when you win the lottery..! And if you'd won the lottery you probably wouldn't be farming!
Check out George Saunders and Lord Muck's channels if you want to see a couple of JCB fanboys in action. Lord Muck did a comparison review between Bobcat v. JCB Teleskid. Probably seen it already and way out of your price range, but it's a good watch seeing them in action, nevertheless. Best of luck in your hunt.
Most likely a municipal machine or used as a snow plow machine
TLS Equipment in Pennsylvania has good cheap skid loader.
Thanks
Had a thought. Why don’t you buy the one off the farm and the farm gets the newer bigger skid steer. Good luck in your search.
Watch the new bobcats. They don’t have the reliable kubota diesel anymore. Bobcat makes their own now.
I can not visit places like that with any kind of checkbook, credit card, or cash on me. I just can't! :D
Ryan stay away from the rustbucket. It looks like it has been under water for a while. Have steen something like that before. Also thought to see a waterline...
One thing with the jbcs is that they are very very touchy with the controls
I think I definitely stay away from that Rusty one that looks like it'll be problems in a few years no telling what they used it for you will find one that fits your needs at your budget time will tell be safe thanks for sharing your input
yes
Its your money and your choice. But I wouldnt touch the one s650 with higher hours with rust on the hydraulic lines that bad. Fyi I paid 29k for my cat 242b3 in 2013. And that included 0% for 4 years which fit me nicely. Yes smaller cab than bobcat and john deere and no radio but it works good on our farm as we arent in it for more than an hour a day. We use it to compost pigs which is pretty acidic and its holding up well. No problems on machine except flat tires
If I could get 0% interest I’d jump on something in a heartbeat
I still say that s70 is ur best option to go with just saying😂
We love our 570 got a great deal on it had the tooth bucket on it only thing I would change is the bucket we got a smoking deal beat them up a little on the price Ryan believe me new equipment isn’t moving
Volvo has had one arm skid steers for some time
@@batmann2o just rumors......................
@@batmann2o JCB =JOSEPH CYRIL BAMFORD
Volvo and jcb come from same factory just different paint and stickers
@@adamderschan4147 Not so....JCB and Terex are competors and Volvo CE owns Terex. VolvoCE and JCB are two seperate companies.
@@richarde.6750 a.aggregatesandminingtoday.com/jcb-and-volvo-agree-joint-venture-on-skid-steers,2010-3,970,0,0,current-news.aspx I'd double check your info there's all sorts of places saying yes one arm Volvo are jcb are built in the exact same place by jcb
Lord Muck (England) loves the JCB. He had a nice demo video not long ago.
Ditto Regards England/UK
What ever you buy Ryan consider tracks!
Hey Ryan can you do a startup and tour your truck and the new skid steer
Roeders have a special to get a free power washer with purchase of skid loader
could have been used for scooping fert.
if you want a good skid steer go get you a gale because we've had one on the farm for 20 years and ain't had a problem with it
and we still have it so we haven't had no problem with a Gehl Skid Steer we've had it over 20 years
Look at takeuchi track loaders great piece of equipment
Hey Ryan, Have you seen the Avant compact wheel loaders? It looks like they would work really good for what you would use it for. I've been watching a few videos on them. They look interesting.
You mentioned two things to watch out for:
1. rusted "hoses"
2. Lots of hours in a short amount of time
The S650 you were looking at had both of these issues. So you should walk on by. Right?
If it sounds too good to be true, It probably is. From the early looking on line, it did make you wonder What the Hey??
Yep! But it makes sense now. We also found a pretty nice S750...
I love shopping for equipment, its the whole paying for it afterwards that I am not a big fan of!🤓
You gotta get joysticks over the foot controls. Will never go back
Wes needs that teleskid
The rust on the nuts and bolts and on the front of the boom and bottom of the cab to me is cosmetic the rusted lines looks like it was used around salt and probably pushed some snow just from looking at it its worth the gamble in buying it if it's in your price range.
