While coaching, I have seen so many crazy things that I couldn't believe happened and that were very difficult to score. So that I didn't have to do it, I have taught several people to do it all they way from 8U baseball on up to 14U. What I remind my scorer is that there will be several plays over the course of a season where you will see things that you will never see again. For those, don't worry so much, just do your best. For the routine plays, over time, you will learn how to score them, and eventually the routine stuff will be easy. The most important thing though is if you are not sure, ask the umpire if the run counted. If there is one thing that you need to get right it, is the score. Good luck!!

According to a scorekeeper friend of mine, you would go to the 2nd inning column (if it happens in the 1st inning, for example), and cross out the 2 at the top there and write 1 over it again. Basically shifting all the innings down by one column.

Scorebook should tell a story. We would keep track of balls, strikes, and fouls, direction of hits (we usually drew a line where ball was hit), and RBIs. At the end of an inning we would draw two diagonal lines in the corner to denote last hitter, and then switch over to next inning. We kept a separate sheet to track number of pitches.

There are ways to add data but I was trying to keep it as simple as possible. In little league, sometimes a coach has to scramble to find someone to keep score. This was designed so the coach can share this link to a novice so he can go back to pregame warm-ups instead of having to teach them in person.

Great start for learning to keep score. Must emphasize that this is extremely basic and perfectly fine for anything below Little League. By 12U (middle school) and certainly by high school, your scorekeeping skills must include much more than is shown here. Understanding and covering things like Reach on Error (ROE), reaching on Fielders Choice (FC), pitch count, stolen base/caught stealing, and more, is critical for being able to present meaningful team and player stats. By high school, your technique should be thorough enough to allow you to accurately and easily feed your results into the Max Preps reporting system. Use of Max Preps for game reporting is required for official high school scorekeeping in many states.

Pitcher A pitches to Batter 1 who flies out to right field. Batter 2 reaches on base on balls. Batter 3 doubles, Batter 2 reaches third base.
    Pitcher B relieves Pitcher A.
Pitcher B pitches to Batter 3 and the ball reaches the backstop. We’ll call it a passed ball to take Pitcher B out of this scenario. (If it is deemed a wild pitch the impact on earned runs is the same). Batter 2 scores on the passed ball. Batter 3 advances to third on the passed ball.
Batter 4 grounds to the pitcher and is thrown out at first, but Batter 2 scores on a fielder’s choice.
Batter 5 grounds out to short and the inning is ended.
What runs are earned in the above scenario, if any?
(Rule 9.16 in the rule book, Earned Runs and Runs Allowed)

Record the batter-runner as reaching on a fielder's choice (FC). Record the out on the runner who was actually put out. (Ex. 6-4 FC) Properly recording a fielder's choice requires corresponding entries on two lines for two players (or three if it is a double play)
