Subbulakshmi, fondly addressed as M.S by her fans, was a true pioneer of anything that has to do with women empowerment. She led by example and showed the way to contemporary women of her era. Though she is famous as an exponent of Carnatic music, her expertise in Hindustani classical music was not short of brilliance.

So Divine. When some sing, we can listen, when some others sing we can see but their singing postures or gestures will be awful but when MS Amma sings, we not only listen but also get into a meditation mood n can even the Lord whom Amma praises.

Oh beloved (pyArE)! Please come (Ay) here and reveal yourself (darSan dIjO) to me, for I cannot (na jAy) live/exist (rahyO) without (bin) you (tum).
jal bin kamal candra bin rajnI, aise tum dekhya bin sajnI
Without (bin) an opportunity to catch a glimpse (dEkhya) of you (tum), the sufferings of this beloved of yours (sajnI) are like (aise) those of a lotus (kamal) without (bin) water (jal), or the moon (cand/candra) without (bin) the night (rajnI)!
Akul vyAkul phirU rain din, viraha kalejA khAy
And in this state of anxiety (vyAkul) and anticipation (Akul) I roam (phirU) around looking for you day (din) and night (rain), as the pangs of separation (virah) tear and eat (khAy) my heart (khalEjA)
