    This episode covers the amazing Aisin 8-Speed Automatic Transaxle which has been used by Lexus and Toyota since 2017 and Volvo since 2014.
    It was also used by Cadillac and Buick in 2017 only, and Chevrolet in 2016 only. GM has replaced this transmission with its own 9T50 9-speed automatic transaxle for subsequent models.
    This is the world's first 8-speed automatic transaxle. This is an amazing piece of technology that uses a modified Lepelletier gear set to obtain 8 forward speeds and reverse with just 2 planetary gear sets.
    See the Rear-Wheel Drive version of this transmission at • 8 Speed Automatic Tran...
    Other vehicle manufacturers have developed 8-speed automatic transmissions, but they use four planetary gear sets (GM's 8L90, Hyundai, and the ZF 8HP).

    My Mini Cooper JCW GP has an Aisin 8 speed. From what I can tell so far it feels like a very stout transmission, quick strong upshifts and downshifts and it puts the power down very well. If I leave it in sport auto mode, I can be cruising in 8th gear on the highway and if I mash the throttle it downshifts to 3rd with quickness and takes off like a rocket. Or I can manually shift down with the paddles or gear selector for more involvement. After having only manual cars for the past 6 years (until the Mini) I thought automatic transmissions were bad... but I was so wrong. These transmissions are incredible.

      @gravityhammer25 - Interested in your comment. We have recently bought a UK 2023 Mini JCW (228bhp) and are very pleased with the transmission. Having been used to VW brand DSGs (with diesels) for many years in various vehicles, the Aisin has low-speed smoothness that DSG just doesn’t, and coz the Aisin has a torque converter I have no worries about slipping clutches wear or heating up in slow traffic etc. Low-speed manoeuvring is now a positive dream rather than awkward. The DSG when cold is nowhere near as good. Having said that I still like the DSG, and one remains as my “daily”.

      @@adrianlw2750 I carry the motion that Aisin 8 is sublime in both low speed cruise in traffic and when manoeuvring back and forth. The only advantage dual clutch types have over this is when entering or exiting the cruise mode the obvious mass of the torque converter initial spin compared to just a clutch engage with the dual clutch types. I love that the Aisin can kick down 4 gears at a time when wanted as well. Great part overall.

    Excellent video as usual John and of special interest to me as I have it fitted to my new Volvo XC90.
    In that application there are two special features.
    First is the Eco drive mode which has an over-run declutch feature so that it completely coasts with no engine braking on a trailing throttle. This may be a mechanical feature such as a one way clutch inside the transmission.
    The second is the Off-Road drive mode which holds first gear to high revs and includes downhill brake assist, which is accomplished by software and the ABS system as far as I can make out.
    It also has a transfer box or at least a crown wheel and pinion for transfer of drive to the rear axle on most XC90 variants and that is all variants available here in the UK. Of course the same Aisin transmission is being used in V and S90 models and 60 series also which are mostly sold as front wheel drive.
    My example is mated to the excellent 235hp 480Nm [approximately] twin turbo two litre diesel engine. The fuel economy and performance both exceed my expectations for a big 2.25 ton car. Yesterday I covered 205 miles, much of it at between 80 and 90 mph, with about 10 miles of city driving and 60 of twisty country roads and achieved 38mpg Imperial or 32 mpg US. Average speed of just over 50mph.

      Aisin transmissions hold up really well in my experience. My old Suzuki had one and it was sold something like four times and the guy that has it now is still driving it around on the same transmission. That's over 22 years later. Keeping the fluid changed regularly will do a lot to keep them running well.

    Fascinating. I owned a 2007 Lexus LS 460, and it was equipped with the same Aisin 8-speed transmission. The later IS-F probably was the same but a heavier service variant. As with most Lexus models, they are rear-wheel driven. Only the ES has the 6-spd FWD. I can't say for sure who produces that unit, but since Asin Seiki is part of the Toyota family, it's a safe bet they make it as well.

    I've got a some questions, but as always your videos are very good. You touched on 3 versions to handle different torque levels, could you eleberate on the 3 versions and how much torque they are good for? I own a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT, it's FWD. Latter I would like to modify it with turbos and all that. Right now the car is fun to drive stock as it is, but gas miliage sucks even at the 222 HP stock level. Transaxle is a 4 speed OEM. Do you think I could get one of those 8 speeds to fit in my car? If so, which one is best for higher torque levels that would fit in there? Also, do you know of any 7 or 8 speed AWD transaxles that may be made to work in my car? Thanks for your time.

    For the company I drive for I used to drive a 2005 dodge caravan with the 42-TE 4 speed transmission. The new 2010 caravan I drive now has the 62-TE 6 speed transmission. I find the first 3 gears annoying to get through unless I am fine with the engine revving to around 4000 rpm which is bothersome to me. Most of the time I baby the van through the first 3 gears which is around 30 mph then when 4th kicks in it feels like the 4 speed in 2nd and I can get the drivers off my rear bumper. Is there something about the manner of "normal" driving with this transmission I should know? Has the 3.8L engine (in both vehicles) been modified for higher rpm? Thanks!

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  Před 7 lety +1

      The 62TE is a modified 41TE with an additional underdrive planetary gear set on the output shaft. The underdrive is used for 1st gear and 3rd gear to create two "new gears" on the original 4 speed transaxle.
      4th gear on the 62TE = 1.452:1, 2nd gear on the 41TE = 1.57:1 very close to the same gear ratio. 5th and 6th gears on the 62TE = 3rd and 4th gears on the 41TE.
      I don't know the answer about the engine RPM, but I doubt there were any mechanical changes, maybe there were some software changes. Is it normal? Yes, for that transmission.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you! Great observation! A single pinion planetary gear set would have an overdrive condition with the sun held and the carrier as the input, but this is a double planetary carrier gear set. It reverses the direction of the ring and slows it down. The formula is Wa=1/((Na/Ns)-1)/(Na/Ns) where Wa is the speed of the annulus gear (ring) and Na and Ns are the number of teeth on the sun and annulus gears. Na = 78, Ns = 38. I hope that helps. Have a good day!

      since no one replied you, yes it is normal on those tranies, they do that until the gearbox hits an certain temperatur, dont think you should floor it before the engine and tranny has been warmed up

    Love your videos.....very informative.....I am wondering in your opinion why are manufacturers making it so difficult for owners to service their transmissions? If the 8 sp transmission is used in multiple models why do some come with a dip stick and some not?

      Thank you. The answer is simple, today's fluids are better quality and will last a very long time if nobody bothers it or adds the wrong fluid to the transmission. See the Toyota ATF history video I made czcams.com/video/t73jM6mT8sU/video.html&lc=UgzXiCE-Slhijah7ykJ4AaABAg and the wikipedia page I created on Toyota ATF at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Automatic_Transmission_Fluid#Toyota_%22Lifetime%22_ATF Best wishes!

      @richarddobson3138 Před 2 lety

      Yes it is an Aisin transmission but it is a 6 speed in the 2017 Camry...The first Aisin 8 speed in the Camry's appeared in the redesigned 2018 Camry..The 6 speed is much smoother and less sluggish at low speeds ..The 8 speed is more responsive at higher speeds and will get an extra 5-8 mpg when highway driven ..

    I watch a lot of your videos. Very informative though sometimes too technical for me. I always prided myself in doing much of my own car maintenance but as I get older these transmission are getting more complicated not to mention the specialized tools that are needed. Are these 8 speed AISAN transmissions that go in the Toyota reliable. I know they're the next generation of the 6 speeds which have had a good track record.....wondering if the 8 speeds are just as good. Also what are your thought on transmission fluid servicing since many manufactures say life time fluid. Some say every 30,000-50,000 miles....others say follow the owners manual. To me it's like taking a bath in dirty water.

    • @WeberAuto
      @WeberAuto  Před 5 lety

      Thank you. I have a complete series of videos on transmission fluids. I also created several Wikipedia pages on transmission fluids. Always follow the manufacturer's maintenance plan. Most drivers meet the severe service requirements of every 60,000 miles for Toyota ATF.

      @@WeberAuto I just watched your video about the Toyota ATF history. This was most helpful!!!! And thank you. I noticed Aisin makes WS fluid and says it's synthetic. I also found MITASU makes WS WTF and it's Synthetic but Toyota WS fluid makes no mention it's synthetic and many people say it's not a good fluid. Never know who to believe...Amsoil of course say they make the best fluid...so confusing........do you have any videos on transmission coolers and their effectiveness? Best Dennis
