This episode covers the amazing Aisin 8-Speed Automatic Transaxle which has been used by Lexus and Toyota since 2017 and Volvo since 2014.
It was also used by Cadillac and Buick in 2017 only, and Chevrolet in 2016 only. GM has replaced this transmission with its own 9T50 9-speed automatic transaxle for subsequent models.
This is the world's first 8-speed automatic transaxle. This is an amazing piece of technology that uses a modified Lepelletier gear set to obtain 8 forward speeds and reverse with just 2 planetary gear sets.
See the Rear-Wheel Drive version of this transmission at • 8 Speed Automatic Tran...
Other vehicle manufacturers have developed 8-speed automatic transmissions, but they use four planetary gear sets (GM's 8L90, Hyundai, and the ZF 8HP).

Very informative video. Very good explanation. Mr. John Kelly , thank you for sharing your knowledge and mastery of this topic with the world. Best video on CZcams i have found on this topic. Respect.
My Mini Cooper JCW GP has an Aisin 8 speed. From what I can tell so far it feels like a very stout transmission, quick strong upshifts and downshifts and it puts the power down very well. If I leave it in sport auto mode, I can be cruising in 8th gear on the highway and if I mash the throttle it downshifts to 3rd with quickness and takes off like a rocket. Or I can manually shift down with the paddles or gear selector for more involvement. After having only manual cars for the past 6 years (until the Mini) I thought automatic transmissions were bad... but I was so wrong. These transmissions are incredible.
@gravityhammer25 - Interested in your comment. We have recently bought a UK 2023 Mini JCW (228bhp) and are very pleased with the transmission. Having been used to VW brand DSGs (with diesels) for many years in various vehicles, the Aisin has low-speed smoothness that DSG just doesn’t, and coz the Aisin has a torque converter I have no worries about slipping clutches wear or heating up in slow traffic etc. Low-speed manoeuvring is now a positive dream rather than awkward. The DSG when cold is nowhere near as good. Having said that I still like the DSG, and one remains as my “daily”.
@@adrianlw2750 I carry the motion that Aisin 8 is sublime in both low speed cruise in traffic and when manoeuvring back and forth. The only advantage dual clutch types have over this is when entering or exiting the cruise mode the obvious mass of the torque converter initial spin compared to just a clutch engage with the dual clutch types. I love that the Aisin can kick down 4 gears at a time when wanted as well. Great part overall.
Thanks John D. Kelly for created this episode, was very informative and very well explained.!
Thank you!
Insane amount of information that you provided with this video! Your expertise is evident.
I love watching people doing what they love.
Thank you! It is a lot of fun to explore these systems.
I have one in my Cadillac XT5 with paddle shifters. I'm more then happy with this transmission!!
Good to hear, Thanks for watching
Great video. Good explanation. I got here, searching what type transmission will our 8 Speed Auto Insignia have... And I find the whole tear down... Awesome! :) Thank you!
Thank you
I have a 2019 Volkswagen with what appears to be this transmission (VW "09S"). This is incredibly helpful; just subscribed! Thank you!
Thank you very much
Thank you for this! It seems like this transmission is a nightmare when it goes wrong, especially with all the clutches and that band. They leave back a lot of residue over the time which cause problems.
Thank you for Thais vídeo. I have enjoyed. It is the gear box of my Volvo xc90. Congratulacions from spain!!!
Excellent video as usual John and of special interest to me as I have it fitted to my new Volvo XC90.
In that application there are two special features.
First is the Eco drive mode which has an over-run declutch feature so that it completely coasts with no engine braking on a trailing throttle. This may be a mechanical feature such as a one way clutch inside the transmission.
The second is the Off-Road drive mode which holds first gear to high revs and includes downhill brake assist, which is accomplished by software and the ABS system as far as I can make out.
It also has a transfer box or at least a crown wheel and pinion for transfer of drive to the rear axle on most XC90 variants and that is all variants available here in the UK. Of course the same Aisin transmission is being used in V and S90 models and 60 series also which are mostly sold as front wheel drive.
My example is mated to the excellent 235hp 480Nm [approximately] twin turbo two litre diesel engine. The fuel economy and performance both exceed my expectations for a big 2.25 ton car. Yesterday I covered 205 miles, much of it at between 80 and 90 mph, with about 10 miles of city driving and 60 of twisty country roads and achieved 38mpg Imperial or 32 mpg US. Average speed of just over 50mph.
Great information! Thank you!
Keep an eye on the valve cover gasket, they leak straight out of the factory
Absolutely, fabulous! Loved it. Although you didn't do a Ford Ranger Tranny, I could use you tutorial and overhaul one. That had drive bands (1996). You're presentations are that good.
I appreciate the cleansiness of the environs.
Thank you!
Another great video. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks Larry!
Absolute nice video! So much knoweledge!
this channel in treasure .thank you Dr
I rented a 2018 Camry with this 8 speed transmission and I was suprised the car had almost 100k miles already and everything was holding up well transmission/engine/interior wise. Didnt notice anything out of the ordinary.
Aisin transmissions hold up really well in my experience. My old Suzuki had one and it was sold something like four times and the guy that has it now is still driving it around on the same transmission. That's over 22 years later. Keeping the fluid changed regularly will do a lot to keep them running well.
Of all the components of any Vehicle , I find these automatic transmission the most complex ...with a lot of mechanical and electric synchronization . It’s enough to give you 8 headaches . But this is an awesome video.
Thanks for your feedback. They are very complex.
This is some great content!
Another excellent video thank you
So nice of you
great videos!!
Thank you!
excellent video. Many thanks
I have a 2015 Volvo S80 FWD with the Drive-e engine and 8sp trans. I was looking for the fill and drain plugs since there's no dipstick. thank you!!
I have a 2018 Toyota Camry, great video. An interesting automatic.
Fascinating. I owned a 2007 Lexus LS 460, and it was equipped with the same Aisin 8-speed transmission. The later IS-F probably was the same but a heavier service variant. As with most Lexus models, they are rear-wheel driven. Only the ES has the 6-spd FWD. I can't say for sure who produces that unit, but since Asin Seiki is part of the Toyota family, it's a safe bet they make it as well.
You are correct, the 2007 model year was the first year for the Aisin AW 8-speed AA80E in the Lexus LS 460. I was wrong. The RX series is also front wheel drive or all wheel drive. Thanks for your feedback!
brilliant presentation .
HI. Thanks for the thorough demo of this transaxle. After rewinding the video a couple of times i still get the same doubt, can you please clarify it to me:
How come the drum that is stoped by the band has got 3 clutches under it (aswell as the 3 yellow corresponding labels) and only 2 pistons? If i undersatnd correctly the inner one is for the c4 clutch and the outter one for the c3 clutch. So how is the c1 clutch applied?
Thanks in advance.
clear explanation from our friend thanks a lot
Thank you!
I have a BMW F46 (Gran Tourer) with this 8 Speed Transmission from Aisin... hello from Germany (Autobahn).😉👍
great content!
I've got a some questions, but as always your videos are very good. You touched on 3 versions to handle different torque levels, could you eleberate on the 3 versions and how much torque they are good for? I own a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT, it's FWD. Latter I would like to modify it with turbos and all that. Right now the car is fun to drive stock as it is, but gas miliage sucks even at the 222 HP stock level. Transaxle is a 4 speed OEM. Do you think I could get one of those 8 speeds to fit in my car? If so, which one is best for higher torque levels that would fit in there? Also, do you know of any 7 or 8 speed AWD transaxles that may be made to work in my car? Thanks for your time.
hello your video is super well explained. I would like to know if we can use the pressure control line to connect a drain machine?

Thank you!
@@WeberAuto Dear Sir, some engineer says these EAT6 and EAT8 transmission' s torq conventor has Cluch inside and in this case the life of these kind of transmissions are similar to DSG, EDC etc. Do you agree with this ?
Great job 👍
thanks for upload.
Thank you!
Gracias por gran información es un gran maestro
Thank you!
Ótimo vídeo, Feira de Santana-Bahia Brasil.
Thank you!
GREAT VIDEO... VERY INFORMATIVE!!!
have learned a lot... THANKS :)
Thank you!
I like watching your channel. It’s really professional and useful. I was just wondering if the Aisin transmission is torque converter type or not ?. Thanks.
thank you for the knowledge
Thanks for teach us more and more!
Thank you!
@@WeberAuto Is this a TF80 Transaxles use in Volvo xc60, right?
Great explanation. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Nice to see this video, just wondering if it is possible to retrofit this gearbox to 1.9JTD 16V (1910cc) engine? I am not sure if it is a M32 or C635 manual gearbox now on my car, but would really like to get this gearbox on it.
What signals does it need from ECU or any other component if there is any data for something like this?
tranks for upload.
Thank you!
Hi, could you tell me the tooth counts for the various parts of the Ravigneaux gear set please? If you don't mind I'd be interested in the counts for the other main gear parts too please. Thanks.
what an awesome review sir! i hope you make a video about aisin warner aw-1, & does motorcraft dct oil suits warner aw-1?
It is awesome how John Kelley can take something that seems sooooo complicated and turn it into something simple. Few instructors in my life have had that innate talent. Thank you kind Sir for what you share with us.
I praise Jesus for you.
Wow this is way above my pay grade!
Switching all my oil to Amsoil!
why switch to amsoil?
Any particular reason why bands have fallen out of favor? I read an SAE paper by Aisin claiming their modern double-wrap bands have lower drag losses than an equivalent clutch pack and have just as good controllability/response
My BMW X1 has this transmission. Silky smooth in Comfort Mode.
Indeed. Smooth and makes 110 diesel KW's just enough for any use.
EXELENTE VIDEO DESDE PERU.
grate job thank you
Hi. Which fluid would you recommend to use for 8 speed Aisin 8G30 assembled to VW models?
watching all this from South Africa Johannesburg
Thanks for watching!
It will also be used in the new Peugeot 508 :). Nice video mate!
I do not know. Thank you!
@@WeberAuto Many PSA models (Peugeot, Citroen, probably any new Vauxhall/Opel models in the future) have, or will soon get, this transaxle. PSA look like building them under licence in Europe to shorten supply lines. I came here to see what was going on under the bonnet of my 2019 Citroen Berlingo. So far, it seems lovely to drive but not as fuel efficient in town as the old robotised manual 6-speed.
Veri good professor.
always interesting ...
Thank you!
Basically a very sophisticated analog, mechanical power computer.
Hello, thanks for filming such detailed video. I had a 2006 volvo S80 with TF80 -SC gearbox. In user manual it say JWS 3309 (Type 4) oil should be used for fluid change. But in later models it says JWS 3324 (AW-1) should be used. While other car manufacturers using TF-80 series claimed AW-1 should be used regardless of model year, should I use AW-1 for fluid instead? Thanks
Best Regards from Hong Kong.
Thank you! Stick with the Type 4 fluid. To my understanding , there is a difference between the two fluids. Best wishes!
As i understand it still has 4 sun gears therefore 4 planetary assy. 2 of the are Simmons and two separate. Only thing is there are arranged in two pairs by merging two planetary carriers into one piece
Hi, no, this transaxle only has three sun gears. One in the simple gear set in the front, and two in the Ravigneaux gear set in the rear. There is no Simpson gear set in this transaxle. Thanks for your feedback!
Does this transmission have a serviceable filter? Didn’t see a filter in the video. Thanks.
Sir, I like this video n the 8 speed transmission. But the braking bands had me worried that might break the fluid, produce metal particles n shorten gear life when the bands are taking a greater proportion of the braking load.
Does the 2017+ Polestar Volvo S60 (362HP) use a variant of this transmission ? The likely candidate is the AWF8F45 since it can handle 480NM.
Yes, it uses the TG81-SC, the same model as the video
Great. Thanks.
I have a 2018 Lexus, I just tore my transaxle all apart, but there are no yellow stickers so I am lost. Can you help me put it back together?
Without those yellow labels, there is no way to reassemble it ;) Have a great day!
For the company I drive for I used to drive a 2005 dodge caravan with the 42-TE 4 speed transmission. The new 2010 caravan I drive now has the 62-TE 6 speed transmission. I find the first 3 gears annoying to get through unless I am fine with the engine revving to around 4000 rpm which is bothersome to me. Most of the time I baby the van through the first 3 gears which is around 30 mph then when 4th kicks in it feels like the 4 speed in 2nd and I can get the drivers off my rear bumper. Is there something about the manner of "normal" driving with this transmission I should know? Has the 3.8L engine (in both vehicles) been modified for higher rpm? Thanks!
The 62TE is a modified 41TE with an additional underdrive planetary gear set on the output shaft. The underdrive is used for 1st gear and 3rd gear to create two "new gears" on the original 4 speed transaxle.
4th gear on the 62TE = 1.452:1, 2nd gear on the 41TE = 1.57:1 very close to the same gear ratio. 5th and 6th gears on the 62TE = 3rd and 4th gears on the 41TE.
I don't know the answer about the engine RPM, but I doubt there were any mechanical changes, maybe there were some software changes. Is it normal? Yes, for that transmission.
The best transmissions are the ones that have had the fluid and filters changed regularly and have not been abused.
Good afternoon. I'm terribly sorry. I understand correctly - the GA8F22AW gearbox and the UA 80E gearbox are identical gearboxes with different hydraulic units?
what tools do I need to drain this transmission. Is it a allen or torx.?
Any idea on where to get a Master Overhaul Kit for the 8f35 out of a 2019 Ford Transit Connect?
I do not know. I don't think ford sells a kit, only parts. Thanks for watching
Dear sir. I can ask you about this issue. I do not know how the oil in the automatic transimission works? Can you help me? Thank you very much. Looking forward to feedback from you.
I will be making a video on this topic this summer, best wishes
Oil capacity is? The only number I found is ~7qts / 6.7l ... is this correct?
Volvo mentions AW-1 Type ATF ... Toyota/Aisin website says that ATF WS is not compatible with older types...
What to do :-P
would love to se you make a video on the ford kuga/escape phev ecvt gearbox
I did a few years ago czcams.com/video/hHU5xFOBcsU/video.html
Is this same unit used in the MK4 ford focus 8speed auto?
What line would i have to disconnect to do a manual transmits flush?
Awesome as always. Any chance of the Ford 10 speed?
Thank you! I am trying to get my hands on a 10 speed, but no luck yet.
Off topic John I apologise.....do you have any plans to make a video about the L110 hybrid transmission from Lexus. I ask because as you know it features a ravigneaux set and it'd be nice to see you do it.
I'll now watch this video! Thanks as ever.
Hi, yes, I hope to get my hands on one, but who knows how long that will take (tight budget). Thanks again!
John, you mentioned an extra solenoid for auto-stop engines. What does that solenoid do? Is it something to do with the restart of the engine/torque converter clutch?
It is a strange little piston type pump to keep the clutches applied with the engine off
Thanks John.
Small wonder CVT transmissions are so numerous. About 8% of the number of parts to these designed correctly. Cheap is the go-to route for new vehicles.
Un gran video y muy esplicativo dada la complejidad de la caja .
Un saludo desde España
Thanks for watching
Great video John, but from around 25:30 to 26:00 you're describing the front gear set with the sun held, carrier input, and ring output. How is this not producing minimum forward overdrive from this gear set?
Thank you! Great observation! A single pinion planetary gear set would have an overdrive condition with the sun held and the carrier as the input, but this is a double planetary carrier gear set. It reverses the direction of the ring and slows it down. The formula is Wa=1/((Na/Ns)-1)/(Na/Ns) where Wa is the speed of the annulus gear (ring) and Na and Ns are the number of teeth on the sun and annulus gears. Na = 78, Ns = 38. I hope that helps. Have a good day!
can this possibly mount up to a 5sfe? gonna need the big ol torque rating considering how much that thing will pull at over 250 horse
Hi great info on this video. I have a 2016 volvo xc90 with this transmission. There is slippage when transmission is cold my Volvo main dealer says there is nothing wrong. Should this transmission slip? Many thanks.
since no one replied you, yes it is normal on those tranies, they do that until the gearbox hits an certain temperatur, dont think you should floor it before the engine and tranny has been warmed up
Is that band brake used in all versions of this transaxle? Or is it replaced with a clutch pack in certain applications?
He said in video higher torque rated versions use clutches instead
Love your videos.....very informative.....I am wondering in your opinion why are manufacturers making it so difficult for owners to service their transmissions? If the 8 sp transmission is used in multiple models why do some come with a dip stick and some not?
Thank you. The answer is simple, today's fluids are better quality and will last a very long time if nobody bothers it or adds the wrong fluid to the transmission. See the Toyota ATF history video I made czcams.com/video/t73jM6mT8sU/video.html&lc=UgzXiCE-Slhijah7ykJ4AaABAg and the wikipedia page I created on Toyota ATF at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Automatic_Transmission_Fluid#Toyota_%22Lifetime%22_ATF Best wishes!
hi dear i have dodge neon 2017 it have exactly the same transsmision gear but FT72SC . Is it possiable to use the shift gear module from any other brand like opel or mazda or vovlo or any brand use the same transsmision gear or not possiable ?
Nice!
Thank you!
How reliable is the gearbox AF50-8, an 8-speed gearbox used in the Opel Insignia? Thanks for the answer
Hi, i have some problem with wiring harness. I dont know how connect wiring harness. I need photo wiring harness connect valve body. TG80SC Cadillac XT5
Have you looked into doing aisin 6 speed found in ram 3500-5500??
I would like to get my hands on one, but no luck so far
Can a semi auto car be converted to full auto?
How does this work on the BMW 4wd system?
Is it possible to use this with a 2NR-VE engine?
Waiting for my Volvo V60 to be delivered, I had to watch this.
Great video, thanks.
... But now I cannot get out of my head trying to figure out how many reverse gears it could deliver... In theory of course?
Good question. I do not know
Great video! So no oil filter in this transmission?
Not that you can get to without complete disassembly
Is the aisin Transmission in the 2017 Toyota Camry LE?
Yes it is an Aisin transmission but it is a 6 speed in the 2017 Camry...The first Aisin 8 speed in the Camry's appeared in the redesigned 2018 Camry..The 6 speed is much smoother and less sluggish at low speeds ..The 8 speed is more responsive at higher speeds and will get an extra 5-8 mpg when highway driven ..
Ok, this video is 6 years old, I get it. But I have this trans in my 2018 TourX and I want to do a drain and fill. Is the GM AW-1 trans fluid the right stuff? GM dealer says the only use Dexvi. Thank you!
Can you call whose ones reliable? Kinda worried since the oil filter in those ones is unchangeable (changeable only with full disassembly)?
Thanks for watching
I watch a lot of your videos. Very informative though sometimes too technical for me. I always prided myself in doing much of my own car maintenance but as I get older these transmission are getting more complicated not to mention the specialized tools that are needed. Are these 8 speed AISAN transmissions that go in the Toyota reliable. I know they're the next generation of the 6 speeds which have had a good track record.....wondering if the 8 speeds are just as good. Also what are your thought on transmission fluid servicing since many manufactures say life time fluid. Some say every 30,000-50,000 miles....others say follow the owners manual. To me it's like taking a bath in dirty water.
Thank you. I have a complete series of videos on transmission fluids. I also created several Wikipedia pages on transmission fluids. Always follow the manufacturer's maintenance plan. Most drivers meet the severe service requirements of every 60,000 miles for Toyota ATF.
@@WeberAuto I just watched your video about the Toyota ATF history. This was most helpful!!!! And thank you. I noticed Aisin makes WS fluid and says it's synthetic. I also found MITASU makes WS WTF and it's Synthetic but Toyota WS fluid makes no mention it's synthetic and many people say it's not a good fluid. Never know who to believe...Amsoil of course say they make the best fluid...so confusing........do you have any videos on transmission coolers and their effectiveness? Best Dennis
How can I know which is the inlet and outlet of the transmission oil cooler to add another oil cooler to my camry v6 since the temperature has reached 217 f
Since my 2018 Sienna has AWD I wonder if that affects which of the 3 grades of trany I have.
you will have the fwd based one.
