I also use a 14” Ox to lay on, then use a 800mm spatula to flatten down, also use a Refina super flex 2 trowel for troweling up the 2nd coat, then use a valles plastic plastering trowel at the end for a perfect finish. Refina Plaziflex trowels are good as well.

My advice is is to get yourself a plastering spatula, so you can flatten down your work quicker. Amazon & plastering one stop shop online sell them.

Alright lads, aside from fancy, expensive trowels, what's one of the lesser glorified tools you find really help with plastering? For example, I always recommend using a radiator brush, it's only a couple of quid and the thinner brush makes it great for brushing in soft angles and edges to make them neater.

I live in western Canada, and plastering is not seen around here. We do stucco and just drywall taping. I have done 20 years of stucco but I would love to get into plastering, especially venitian plaster. The problem I'm having is that it is difficult to get the mud here. What is the difference between taping mud and the mud you use? Are there any ideas you can give me? Maybe suggestion on how to make my own lime mud from slack lime (even that is hard to get here)?

Neat video, grabbed my attention as I too find the Ox trowels comfy to hold, good value, and somehow they help me doo a good quality job despite my mediocre skills. So a question for you - how would you prepare and then plaster a wall where one half is painted cement render, the other half is unpainted cement render, with a rough 150mm channel where the old wall has been removed? I've a few ideas, but would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks. Martin.

It’s worth paying for a decent stainless steel trowel if you want a decent finish. Ox &
Marshall town are the best I’ve used. Don’t use a cheap Wilko trowel.

I'd say so yes Paul. It's probably not going to happen if it's the first time.you have ever held a trowel but if you give yourself a bit of a chance and maybe practice on a few small walls you will stand a much better chance of success.

You can do, but you have to be careful not to drag too much plaster off the wall. Use a plastering spatula instead then you can make sure everywhere is flat. Not sure what the guys think?
