- IT'S ALIVE!!! Finally, the new turbo pinto is running! Man did we have some hold ups, mostly life outside of the garage, but also some issues with getting the sensors talking to the ecu properly. With that all resolved though she fired right up! There are a few jobs left to do before going to get it mapped, but man, we are VERY excited!!
DYNO VIDEO IS HERE - • Turbo Pinto Engine Bui...
DuckSport is friends, having fun with cars. We aren't professional mechanics, and have learnt what we know by spending time playing with cars and normally getting it wrong a couple of times first. You won't see big budget builds here, but hopefully that makes what we do interesting!

Let's see.Stock Pinto was 112bhp .Turbo and head mods should double it.What gbox to make the most of power band? Can you use all that power?Silly question.Have fun.
Tran-x straight cut type 9. Time will tell how it copes with the power. As for power, not got a final figure yet, but triple the original power is definitely on the cards czcams.com/video/QL1Tx4BMMPE/video.html
If you are looking for 300 bhp, why not go for a 16valve cosworth engine. 205 block. 250bhp is easy. 300 isn't to difficult to get and it breathes way better than any sohc can. If staying on sohc, sodium filled valves, ported & flowed head Had 174 bhp with twin carbs, 4 branch exhaust on a 2085cc Pinto. Put that in a Capri with a 2.8i back axle and brakes. Many a BMW 5series got passed. Say a guy had converted the rear end off a Sierra into a Capri. Unfortunately body work ain't my forte, so didn't go that route. Sold her to get an XR4x4 2.9. saw there was turbos for these but Megabucks to do
Robert Willis because YB are far more expensive than this cost to build! Plus it’s fun to do something a bit different. This engine is up and running now and making fantastic power, I won’t spoil it for you but be sure to check out the dyno video - czcams.com/video/QL1Tx4BMMPE/video.html
What year pinto made 112??

My dream..to have a bridgeport in my garage.
minibike madman i love steves workshop. So many great toys 😁
Nice Video. My Dad used to have a Ford Taunus 1979 with 1.6 Pinto engine
Cheers. It’s going into a 1958 Ford Prefect now.
We run a 2300 /2550 ford and we making 285hp and 288 trq at the flywheel and we run dirt/ asphalt round tracks. They are very tough engine's and turn them up around 8500/9300 rpm
Is that NA? Wish we got those over here, they look so much easier to make power from. Sounds like they love to rev too, I’d trust this to 8k but don’t think I’d date risk going higher!
If look at for a a all Aluminum Head Volvo 2.4 late model turbo ,, is 100 better to intake and exhaust,,will 2.4 ford match head gasket on Lima 2.4
Its a very interesting engine
I love it ❤
Thank you, its certainly a lot of fun!
I've come to respect this engine, it would be pretty cool to see an inline 6 version.
That would have been cool, never happen now though. Although someone with the right motivation could make an in-line 8...
It's called a Barra
Why, 300hp possible with the 4.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2.3 turbo engine acquired from my brothers estate. Its mated up with a 5 speed from a ranger pick up. The engine is in a '27 ford T roadster partially completed. I have the ECU and entire wire loom from the donor '85 thunderbird. I have my work cut out for me as I have no idea where to start with this rats nest wiring. Any tips or web sites for further education appreciated.
I’ve certainly been there with the wiring. Best tip I can give you is spread it all out and just take it one wire at a time and label it all up. Once you’ve done that you can work out what needs to be where and should make the installation much easier. Can’t give you any links for further reading on your particular setup as although they look similar the European Pinto is very different to the us lima engine.
A good forum for all things project car is Rhocar.org, primarily uk based and focused on kit cars, but excellent general car knowledge and friendly, helpful members.
NATO, North American Thunderbird Organization, turboford, foureyed pride, the merkur encyclopedia, and coolcats (if this one is still up). The guys on these sites know their business on these motors and cars.
Took my T-Bird from 200 ho stock to 250 hp with just small cheap mods! If I go with a bigger turbo and 3" exhaust, I can get close to 300 hp. And if I go with a mega squirt 3 and ditch the stock ecm, I can go higher than that!
Good Luck!
GOOD GOING!!!
Thanks, Marlin Press. Had a long time away from working on it and the last few weeks a few issues to work out but am so pleased that it is running now!
I love pinto motors. 5 main bearings, 200 HP. is easy prey for them. Mine is used for a daily driver and has over a 100 thousand miles.
Mark Arrington the European pinto engine (rather than the Lima engine that was in the American pinto car) which this is, has a tough time reaching 200bhp, until you give it some boost anyway! Unfortunately over here in the uk people shy away from turbo and supercharging and so it never really got developed. Instead people spend many many thousands of pounds to build peaky NA engines that aren’t nice to drive on the road, all because that’s the tuning scene that was developed here because of their use in Motorsport.
Looks good
Les Morris cheers, making good power so far and more to come.
Also one of the rod mags somewhere around 2000 had pinto built by high school shop With turbo coup 2.3 w/ large turbo(lots of lag) and nitrous to spool it was running 10 second 1/4 mile
Frank Sandlin that sounds awesome. Wish we got the 2.3 here, so much more capable than the euro spec 2.0 engine we got.
Very interested to know who provided the turbo header for your 2.0L Pinto engine?
www.swmotorsport.tk made it for me
Thank you mister...
Thank you for enjoying my content :D
Can you explain me where did you get the oil for the feed line?
I’ve seen a lot taking it from the oil pressure sensor, but I’m not sure about it
Exactly that, the oil pressure switch port. I have a T in there so I can run a pressure sensor and the take off for the turbo.
DuckSport tank you very much
Andrea Tomasetig my pleasure, good luck with your build.
I've had at least 3 of these lil mules back in the day in mustangs...never thought of them as high performance potential, always wanted to Yank in favor of (drumroll.......)
I like to do things differently, so had to give it a go to see what we could make it do. Having seen what skogenracing and holmgren racing were doubt with them, we knew there was some serious potential.
Pintos are so cool my uncle had a blue one and it was pretty fast for a little car
This is a pinto engine not related to the awful ford pinto car

Sorry, but I have no idea from those numbers. If you send a photo to me on the Facebook page I will do my best to help.
What intake manifold is that?
greg hernandez it’s a ford Sierra efi pinto manifold that was modified to fit under the bonnet of a standard seven style car.
Power wise anything over 250 is mental in a low weight 7 style car
I hope so 😁
DuckSport what do u think it will make
Mr Old school depends entirely on how much boost I feel brave enough to run on the day.
@@DuckSport Are you running 91 octane? I want to guess 8 pounds of boost, 285 HP and 250 Ft Lbs of torque.
@@DucatiPaso750 Using 98 octane (uk standard). I wish I could make that kind of power at that kind of boost! Boost will need to be a lot higher unfortunately to manage that.
Without O-rings the pinto head will only take about 22 pounds of boost before it lifts! Maybe my boost Guage was off....
A Bridgeport mill probably isn't a good way to get something of that size flat. There is movement in the knee and table sag at extreme ends of the travel. I would be surprised if the surface was flat and straight within .003/.005".
What pisons didyou use fo this build
Kevin Steenkamp cossie spec
@@DuckSport any chance of being able to use std pinto pistons or has to be cossie? What about the rods?
Kevin Steenkamp completely depends on your power goals. Pistons are the weak point of the standard engine, but if you are replacing pistons it makes sense to do rods at same time.
Ok thank you, whats the compression ratio with the cossie pistons?
Kevin Steenkamp this engine is 8.2:1. There is a lot of machining required to get it to that though, if you just drop in cossie pistons then you end up at low 7s
Glad you're back. Cam cover in the dish washer how do you get away with it
I’ll let you know when she realises 😂
I did my inlet manifold at 70° wash last weekend while my wife was out. Ignorance is bliss !
Did it come out nice? Just bought another inlet manifold that’s gonna need a clean up 😂
Wasn't that impresed with the result, or the smell in the dishwasher afterwards !
David Cooper 😬 oh dear. The cam cover came up nicely, but then it was just a bit of oil residue etc on that. Will see how bad this one is when it turns up, mainly bought it for the fuel rail 😂
Watched all that to see it running for around 10 seconds.
There is a video of the dyno tuning here if you want to see more of it running czcams.com/video/QL1Tx4BMMPE/video.html

Anybody can go fast if they have deep pockets. But true hotrodding is going fast cheap!!!
Guess this hotrodding then coz it was far from an expensive engine build ;-)
I thought the 351-C was the Pinto engine. Ah well. Still cool. : )
Over here this little ford sohc is what we mean by a pinto engine. Amazing how much the term is used though.
@@DuckSport Nods. I was tongue in cheek referencing Bob Glidden and his famous 72 Pinto w/ 351-C.
hmm unless you gappen.across one of the cosworths thst were installed in a few of these
Cossie engines are great, but I built this for about £4K less than it costs to buy an unknown condition cossie engine 😁
No assembly lube...?
What makes you say that?
@@DuckSport No application was shown in the video. People take these videos as "the ONLY WAY to do things" and copy what they see. No lube was applied or seen on the bearing surfaces.
Roger Roberts nothing about this video is instructional, so not sure why anyone would take it as such. There is also a hell of a lot of the build process missing other than just the application of assembly lube, but I can confirm it was used, and the engine is running just fine.
@@DuckSport Yes I am aware that the video did show the engine ran, BUT!
I am dead serious about viewers take what they see as gospel. There is a high possibility that viewers of your video have little or no experience rebuilding engines, lessor chance the viewer has experience.
If you did not intend the video to be instructional it is best to clearly state that in the video. Best to be safe then have someone come after you with a law suite...
I'll also add that I was not aware that "Pinto engine" was the name used in Europe. In the States that term means only the 1600 and 2000 engines used in the Pinto automobile over here (later the 2300 Lima, pronounced "Ly-ma" because the factory is in that Ohio city, not "Lee-ma" as pronounced in the rest of the World). Just happen to look at your video and two others before I received an education on an engine I have followed since 1970!
hello my friend I am an enthusiast like you, I am starting to prepare my pinto ohc injeccion, I would greatly appreciate it if you name me pages or sites where I can buy all the necessary parts for the OHC engine, thank you very much, you will help me a lot
Hi Ivan, brands hatch performance supplied a lot of the pinto specific parts for this build and are highly recommended - shopbhp.com
Is there anything particular you are looking for?
@@DuckSport thanks mate!! I looking for pinto atmospheric project , maybe up 20-30 horsespower
IvaNZeer- speak to brands hatch performance for a cam, add a set of side draught carbs or bike carbs and that should see 25-30bhp over a stock pinto.
Did i see a cast crank .
Backyard-Built-Trucks yep, standard crank. Just been balanced and had a couple of flywheel dowels added. They are surprisingly strong in the pinto engine and more than up to the job in this application.
Yep, they take 400hp with turbo.
If I remember correctly Vizzard mentions in his book on tuning this engine that Esslinger was running them upto 500bhp!
I love the 2.3 ford engine. I figured somebody would make some forged internals for them . back in late 80's early 90's had a buddy that built the hell out of one in of all things a pinto and it was quick he had some nitrous on it dont know how much but he had a i beleive a 600 holley double pumper on it. The idle was insane he had some huge ass camshaft in it. Called it his rod squasher.
@@backyardbuilttrucks1 this isnt a 2.3 lima engine, its a 2.0 european pinto engine, and they are completely different, despite looking similar. You can buy steel cranks for them, but its really not needed for this application.
Ok, why didn't you just get a mustang 2.3l turbo engine out of an svo?
Because that is a completely different engine and wasnt sold in the UK market. Although this looks similar to the 2.3 lima engine from the mustang, it is a completely different platform.
@@DuckSport lol move to the states mate!
As much as some of the car scene stuff makes it tempting, I like it here too much 😁
When I was 16 i worked all summer for a 76 pinto my uncle had fixed up,, he bought it from a guy in Tenn and it had tweety bird imbossed in the seats I dont know what was done to it but it had a small 4bbl carb and headers and long story short he taught me how to drag race it,,,many 5.0 mustang fell to the buzz saw as from redlight to redlight they couldnt catch me ,, sadly the pinto rusted away and got sold off parts while I was in the Army. Nice seeing an eng build on the tube =)
Did the pinto have the European 2.0 engine? I assume it did and that is why we call it a pinto engine.
@@DuckSport Pretty sure 2.3l but that was in the late 80's lol
Larry ah ok, that would be the Lima engine then.
@@DuckSport yeah I think so,I know my reply wasnt about the turbo eng but Ive been a fan of the 2300 for years just like the video =)
Larry well this started out as a 2.0 engine from a cortina 😁
? - I put another air cleaner on a 73 pinto 2.0 and was wondering how to hook valve cover breather to the air cleaner. for the past 3 yrs, I just have some marine carpet with a clamp where you'd hook the hose on the oil breather? ON YOUR SET UP HERE, does your oil cap have a hose for connecting somewhere??
For my setup I removed the valve from the block breather and routed it to a catch can instead.
The oil cap in this video doesn't have a hose connection, it was the earlier type that just breathed over the rocker cover. I have since changed to the type with a hose connection which also goes to a catch can.
This one is a 2.0 pinto engine. Not a 2.3.
Correct, this is a 2.0, they didn’t make a 2.3 pinto. The 2.3 were lima engines, and although look similar to this are an entirely different platform.
@@DuckSport true. 3 cam bearing instead of 4 is one of the major differences.
Maynard Reed the bore spacing is also different, which is what allows the Lima to run a much bigger bore than the pinto. In fact, there are zero interchangeable parts.
@@DuckSport ok. Other than the head I wasn't sure about the other differences. Thanks for sharing you knowledge.
Instead of the music how about you talking explaining what your doing and why .
Most of my videos follow that format, this was a break from the norm to celebrate the first start of the engine. A lot of the clips in this video are explained elsewhere in the series and just reused here for this summary video.
Instead of playing music that sucks should of been talking telling people about the building of the motor
Listening to me talk for that long giving very vague details about the spec of the build would have been worse than the music 😂
Capable of 300 hp with 225 ft lb of torque. Honda's engine 3000 hp 2100 ft lb of torque.
How much money do you want to spend?
is 300hp and 225lbft your guess for this engine or something else? There is a video of this on the dyno on low boost on the channel.
Not sure what Honda engines have to do with anything though? Certainly a 3000bhp engine of any description would be of no use to me in the car this engine is in, and of course, with a 3000bhp engine, you would need a transmission and axle capable of handing it, none of which comes cheap!
For my circumstances, this was actually a cheap way to not only achieve my power goals but have something with plenty of headroom, all in a car that only weighs 750kg.
Here is the link to the dyno video czcams.com/video/QL1Tx4BMMPE/video.html
It has had some further work since but still only on the "low boost" settings.
@@DuckSport So I was good on my guess then, in my 20s we would cam and 4 barrel the carb. Once we blew them up we would change to small block Ford, top loader if you find it, and a 9 inch rear diff all un a Pinto chassis.
Then Ford came out with the Fox body Mustang.
James Lacey yeh not far off. Though this isn’t the engine from a pinto, it is the European 2.0 sohc that we call a pinto, which is different the the Lima sohc that you got in the pinto cars - confusing I know! I am trying to research some of the differences and history of both engines at the moment to do a video on them, as they look very similar, even next to each other, but the Lima is just slightly physically bigger.
Honda is also a front wheel drive POS that has backward rotation so puting it rear wheel drive like ALL performance cars should be is impossible unless you have a rare S 2000 engine.
Gay music
Glad you liked the music.
Whatever
Probably my favourite Oasis song that - czcams.com/video/EHfx9LXzxpw/video.html
Way bad choice of music.
david carder I dunno man, 80s style songs about cars/driving for a video building an 80s engine, seemed kinda fitting.
@@DuckSport you're right man, but in this case it just seems out of place.they should be playing the theme song of rocky.
