I believe the term "no fun city" was coined by local Vancouver reporter Shane Foxman in a news story that ran on CKVU/CITY/GLOBAL channel 13/UHF 21 about 25 years ago. I cant recall the exact topic of the story but Im sure it had something to do with the cancellation of a popular event. Maybe sea festival? It was a long time ago. I'm sure Shane would remember
In the early 80’s the moniker started to be tossed around by teenagers. There is a documentary with the name. Check it out Ms. Forbes probably didn’t frequent the underground scene, or the Luv A Fair too often. Vancouver had more support of the arts after Expo 86. In the 40’s/60’s Vancouver was a popular spot for bands to start a tour. Look up the history, you’ll be surprised the city wasn’t the way it is now until 2000 when the rents started to jump. There is lots to do depending on your tastes. Doesn’t always have to be alcohol related, gotta have people to make the connection and it’s a pretty transient place these days with lots of new residents
I think the comment about being reluctant to return a "hello" for fear of the person wanting something is pretty accurate. I think people in Vancouver are wary of being panhandled, and that may cause the colder attitudes. I live outside of the city, and when out exercising make a habit of saying hello when passing someone on a trail. It's just manners - you're in fairly close proximity, so not acknowledging the other person to me seems silly. Some days everyone returns the greeting, and other days it's a depressing few. That's just where we are, but I think it's encouraging to at least try to buck the trend of negativity. It's an aim for something better.
The Saddest part about the "Entertainment District" is it was a city project. A city council that proves it no zero about our arts and culture. They stopped anyone outside the Granville area from getting liquor licences. This made people not have local places in their areas to go to, along with a skytrain that shuts down early. What does this mean if you are going out you're going far and you're paying allot, this created Binge drinking which has increased the physical and sexual violence times 10000% on Granville. Meanwhile the city would police art spaces and diy spaces and shut down live local music. And PS as far as the riots go again that was the stupid city idea... lets screen the game downtown what could possibly go wrong ?! Boot the Karens out of Council ASAP
