Hello Everyone! I just want to clarify that this is one group of Amish out of many. Their opinions and views on life are theirs and do not represent all Amish people. Most of this group are Beachy Amish and Marcus (the older man) is New-Order Amish. Beachy Amish are the most liberal Amish with the most amount of modernity in their lives. This is why I was able to record this conversation. When we "English" (all people that aren't Amish) say "Amish" we categorize many different types of Amish into one group and this is why this can get so confusing.
For example, the Beachy Amish can have cars and electricity in their homes. The Schwartzentruber Amish are the Amish who chose to live away from modernity completely (without cars, phones, etc.) and are quite often the Amish we think of when we think of the Amish.
Here is an oversimplified list of different types of Amish I met while in Holmes County, Ohio:
-SWARTZENTRUBER AMISH (the most conservative and most removed from the modern world)
-DAN AMISH (somewhat removed from everybody else, conservative)
-OLD-ORDER AMISH (can't drive vehicles but some of them can ride as passengers, only have steel wheels on their carriages, not rubber. Allow Rumspringer--their youth to explore the world and "try things out").
-NEW-ORDER AMISH (Broke away from the Old Order Amish. Less conservative than Old Order, but more conservative in the sense that they don't promote Rumspringer, they use rubber on their carriage wheels, use more modern sliding doors on their carriages, some have phones.
-BEACHY AMISH (The most accepting of the modern world and the closest to the most conservative Mennonites. This is the group in the video)
There are many other sects and to confuse things even more each sect has different rules depending on their church.
None of the Amish are easy to open up like this on camera and it's only because of Josh that we got in with this beautiful group of people.
In the next few weeks, I'll have a video inside a Schwartzentruber's home. They agreed to let me film as long as I didn't show their faces. It was a surreal experience, to say the least. I will also have some videos for you with Old-Order Amish people.
I hope you enjoy this series! Like most things in life, there's much more beneath the surface with a lot of complexity mixed in. I hope you find as much joy in discovering the Amish as I have. See you next Sunday!

The Amish family were like us growing up in the 60's and 70's. There was no computer or anything fancy. We lived a normal life. We played outside and came home when the street lights came on. Friends were so much closer and the crime was not like it is today. People were more friendly in those years. Was a great video
Murder rate in the US was double what it is now in the 1970s. The 1960s were about as safe as times are now. There are just more people now and constant access to news so you hear about every single scary thing that happens in country of 340 million. If you feel unsafe or isolated, you should change where you live. The city I live in has a ton of friendly people.

Crime is certainly not worse today lol you have to check per capita and figure how much more people are on the earth today. We may hear about more crime with how quick news travels today but truly crime is much less then it once was. I hate hearing people say theres still good people.....of course there is thats great things happening now and will always be.

I think we all can. I actually, in a sense, envy that family: their togetherness, their simple joy and honesty.
Not a soul looking at a phone. Real people talking to each other, fully engaged. Reminds me of life before the Internet!

As a early Millenial I remember a time without smartphones, and internet. It's such a memory now, but I can relate going outside to have fun not just sitting in your room watching CZcams.

Nothing is stopping you being a slave to the internet. Buy a standard phone. Stop using social media. Get in tune with nature more.
Now we have a huge problem with diabetes and childhood obesity .
Back when I was in school, free time and fun meant hanging out at a friend's house to play board games or watch movies, going to a cafe to chit chat and have a bite or playing sports together. Nowadays free time and fun means playing some multiplayer game on your phone and sitting around staring at your phones rather than actually interacting.
As good as technology is, I am grateful the internet was not available to my friends and family when I wa growing up. My greatest memories as a child was playing outside, making swings, go karts, getting muddy in the woods, riding our bikes all around the neighbourhood and also having quality family outings and games nights. Precious times that as a society we have drifted away from as a consequence of technological advancement. I feel privileged to have seen both sides of the internet divide.
Me too. Entertainment at home in the 60’s 70’s 80’s and the 90’s was no internet/cell phones. Heck I didn’t get a smart phone until 2010! TV , music radio, playing with neighbourhood kids the piano guitar playing in back yard climbing trees riding skateboards and doing chores for my mum.
What I see here is almost everything most of America is missing. A sense of purpose, community, family values and hard work. It’s so pure and beautiful
It's completely disconnected from the international community. They have nothing to do with the world, whatsoever.
"They are disconnected from the international community", yet Josh is married to Ukrainian and Amish/Mennonites can travel to dozens of countries to their fellow Amish/Mennonites of different race/ethnicity and be accepted by people they've previously never met as if they are family. Can you do that? If not, who's really disconnected from the international community?

Josh is not Amish, but 'Beachy Amish" which means an apostate sellout to worldly affairs. He has a smartphone, but claims that he has anti-pornography software and he claims to have uninstalled his internet browser and only uses it to make calls. Seems fishy and tempting if you ask me, and all true Amish would agree.

When you think about it, it wasn't that long ago when everyone was that 'dumb.'
Before the internet we mostly had little idea of what was going on in the world.

Before regular free to air TV, ditto.
Before newspapers, ditto.
Now we spent so much time fretting about things that happen so far away, that we are essentially powerless to change.... that's we've lost contact with our neighbours.
They can integrate themselves further into modern society, but just stay away from the woke movement, and they'll be fine I guess

Whether Peter knows it or not, in a sense, he is more effective as a missionary than many others who devote their life to it. Inadvertently spreading the gospel to tens of millions through his interactions with the Amish, the woman from whittier Alaska, etc. Her prayer rings true for me every time Peter interacts with a person of faith.

I particularly like how vocal the women are & how well received it is by the men around the table.
Women have no leadership roles in their religion. Men run the religion and make the rules.
I noticed this as well and assumed it would not be this way.
They have a counter culture but not a patriarchal culture.
I think this is more a menonite thing. The Amish beat their women in this submission.
@@harlanbarnhart4656 I think that all the Abrahamic religions are patriarchal, even though the Jews determine their Jewishness through the mother it is still dominated by males who decide how they live, pray and work and even what they eat.
Such a conflicting feeling: watching this with my face buried in my phone - while accepting that without it, i may not have been allowed this opportunity to get to know these people and learn their practices and principles, without prejudice.

The internet is an open highway into your home. That includes both a lot of good and a lot of the worst in humanity. Just remember you don’t need it, believe it or not humans lived for thousands of years before it.

The internet is a blessing and a curse, and has had an impact on the social structure of the world. This is such a wholesome video and took me back to when I was a child and was not glued to screens. They are truly living the life. God Bless!

One positive of the internet is that there are people like Peter who create these educational videos that remind me of all the cool people, worlds and experiences out there.

reminds me of the 80s kids went out to play, the parents sat around and talked, and no internet or cellphones. brings back memories of how I grew up.
Except in the eighties , many were struggling to survive in the UK , recession and struggles ,the Amish all appear very comfortably well off , something few people were or are today ,
@@donnaharris8097 They work their fingers to the bone to be comfortable. It doesn't happen by itself. Plus they have the support of their close community which many other groups don't have. Their lifestyle works because it is Biblically based. Other societies are lacking that, and it shows.
Back in the good old days. Everything now is so divided and full of hate. Luckily for me I live on a rural acreage and I like to keep my like simple.
We didn't even have a landline, much less a TV. Life was good back then. You got caught doing something stupid, sometimes the cops got involved and instead of filing a report the cop would drive you home and have a stern talk to your parents which usually ended in you getting slapped and grounded for an appropriate amount of time. I remember stealing a chewing gum in the local store - the owners called my parents and had them pick me up - that was a bad evening which I didn't repeat. Much better than what we do today - it teaches boundaries and you adhere to them for the rest of your life.
@@donnaharris8097 It's because they live within their means and are mostly self sustained. A lot of people are in dire straits because they live beyond their means and that catches up to you eventually and more often than not in bad times.
I' m really drawn to the simple and community-oriented way of life of these people. Their emphasis on strong family bonds, faith and helping one another is truly inspiring. It's a lifestyle that values humility and kindness.
Best Amish episode ever. That dinner discussion is not only eye opening, it's life changing for anybody thinking this kind of living is impossible : combining some technologies and keeping the better values. If most people would just be a bit more inspired by this way of life, the world would surely be a better place. Just awesome.

Hello Peter, I wanted to convey my sincere appreciation for the content you've been crafting about the Amish and Mennonite communities, both of which are Anabaptist Christian groups. Their way of life has captured my interest deeply. Being a Muslim, I've observed numerous similarities, such as their dress, women covering their heads, men saving mustaches and only keeping the beard, modest attire, strong family values, culinary traditions, and even their approach to insurance policies. If my schedule permits, I'm seriously contemplating a visit to their communities in December.
How great are these people to let you spend time with their families and answer your questions. Love it.

Yes! And if you can't teach your children at home, I feel they would say parents should teach values and character at home rather than allowing schools to do so.
Sadly, we didn't learn that. They've got the best thing in our entire country going on there. They don't have TV or Social media pushing them to think a certain way or giving them unrealistic expectations of their life based on Instagram. It's literally the best things in life, and that's the focus. I think for a lot of us who don't have a lot of religion in our lives; watching these people and how they treat each other makes my idea of religion and community wrong.
Yes n there kids play together not be single children with a no parent at home sitting in a dark room depressed on a device this is why kids are cutting n shooting up schools . I played outside all day. These kids do t even like the sun. N have no friends n do not get exercise or even no how to have friends there vaping at 13

I love this family, every last one of them. God bless them all. Give me a little cabin off to the side i’ll do the cleaning 🥰 I have a 10 year old that is already accustomed to learning from mom, playing outside, reading and enjoying childhood. We love God and we are great learners and listeners ❤

I was born in 2003 and we have things like this all the time. This isn’t exclusive to the 70s or 80s like many people seem to think, younger people have experienced this too it’s still relevant to current day. I’m not sure how rare kids playing outside is in America, but it’s very common in most places
This is 100% spot on. I was raised Mennonite, very similar to how these people live. When I was 21 I moved away and started living on my own, and I'm the only kid out of 5 to leave the Mennonites..i believe in Jesus and am a Christian saved by faith but I am no longer Mennonite. After being raised like these people it was quite the culture shock for awhile after I went on my own. I'm now married and have my own kids, but these values and beliefs will always be inside me and I am always trying to teach my family some of the simple things in life.. playing board games, putting down the electronics, turning off the TV, going outside and enjoying nature, so that maybe my kids will have some of these values instilled in them so they can pass them on someday.

The more i see their community the more i think they live a more normal life than us

The thing that I found the most interesting was how much the women speak and are involved. Many portray the Amish women as weak or treated as lesser, but the women had very strong options and were not silenced by the men. I admire a group who treats all as equal and allows all genders to speak as an equal

I grew up deep Mennonite, mostly more conservative than the family shown in this video in Holmes county, in Berlin and Millersburg, two of the towns shown in the last video in this series. Amish women DO work outside the home...if their husband can't make enough money to allow them to stay home with the kids. As for the "husband staying home instead", have you ever actually been around a working farm or Amish business? No, you have not because if you had, you'd know that an Amish husband and father might be out in a field or in the barn or in the business shop....which 99% of the time is right next to the house. The husband IS staying home, he's just not underfoot in the house. He's out doing the dirty, physically demanding work so the women don't have to. Amish women DO work right next to their husbands in the fields or barn or shop, few wives are as much of real equals and partners to their husbands as Amish wives but, what I saw growing up was, while Amish women like very much showing off their physical prowess and ability to work, especially when young and looking for a husband, like 99% of women, they like even more being with their kids and being a homemaker and not having to do the dirty and physically demanding outdoor "men's work." And as soon as the kids, both boys and girls, are big enough to accompany either parent around the place while they are working, (4-5 YO) that's what the kids do. In between playing, that is so the assumption your comment makes of an Amish wife stuck at home with a bunch of squalling brats while the husband is having a fun at a job is entirely false.

The more I watch these videos. The more I feel a calling from God that this is where I need to be. Not in California working 40+ hours just to pay for an apartment that I don't/ cant even enjoy. Where social media violent video games and violence plaguing our children. I love this Peter your such an amazing light in my life. I wish I could find a great place like this. With community and God on the forefront

The story of the churches pulling together to pay off a 1.03 million dollar hospital bill had me in tears. What I smiled about when they described the 55 year old lady who passed as a 'girl'. I have never met anyone from that world but now I see why they have separated themselves from this world. They made the right choice.

You need to learn about the whole Amish culture before you say "I'd rather." People leave that life for a variety of reasons. You have to be born Amish...they do not recruit. I think if a member marries or dates a person of color or different ethnicity they would be shunned. Its not racially acceptable to outsiders. They are very closed to others.
There is a huge flaw in this beautiful perfect Amish isolated life. Most of key products medicines, technologies they use are came from ugly, dirty, violent world. Plus they are outer protected by army and politics of outer dirty world origin. So in a sense they are living another forced artificial beautiful life half or majorily dictated by Bible and similar "dark" rules.

As an English person that spent much of my late teen years in Holmes county, this was very enjoyable to watch. One of the first CZcams videos about the Amish that wasn't a bunch of BS.
I've been there too loved it. I went up with a friend of mine his dad lived in Wilmot OH right across the street from 'The Amish Door' restaurant. I went out there a few months at a time . His father owned a roofing company and employed amish workers he was also married to a Mennonite so he lived very near Mennonite rules.
My late step-dad boarded a horse at an Amish farm in Charm. I spent a lot of time with the family when he'd taking the horse and buggy out. We were known as the English who boarded a horse at the Miller's farm. One time my mom and step-dad were out in the cart when it started to pour. He decided to pull into the nearest barn. They were welcomed by the family, who shared coffee and pie with "The English" couple until it stopped raining.

I really don’t see why people outside of the Amish community look at the Amish in a weird light. They’re doing things just the way it was before the internet. Honestly a beautiful way of living, pick up a book instead of your phone, go outside and enjoy nature, and communicate with one another. I love that this community can just walk up to one another and make real conversations and connect with one another; no awkward encounters because it’s just the norm.
Maybe because they are deeply racist. It's well known that they hate black people deeply. They are more anti-black than all the white supremacists in the south. They live like they are in the 18th century and also think like they are in the 18th century.

As far as lifestyle, my grandmother grew up this way simply because they were rural. Not that long ago, we were allot more similar to Amish.

my take on what Josh was trying to explain at 10:47: schools should teach math and science and history and literature. Parents should teach their kids values and morals and self-discipline and respect and how to live. It's not good for the kids when parents give up that responsibility and let schools and daycares do the parenting.

I'm shocked how surprisingly chill Amish people are. Despite all the stuff we do nowadays and they're so apart from our world, they are completely down to earth, dedicated to God. Incredible.
This type of Amish aren’t the same. I live in an area with them and they are very in touch with the world. A lot of them work in factories. I worked for the Amish for 3 years at an Amish tree company that was solely dedicated to clearing trees away from power lines so people have reliable electricity. The Amish guys didn’t drive cars or trucks but you better believe they were taking full advantage of being able to use technology to work. They were in skid steers, bucket trucks, the boss man had a 4g iPad for emails.
We’d talk about the college football game he shouldn’t technically have any knowledge of the events, but you better believe he knew every big moment of the game. The kids in rum springa have fucking crotch rockets and smart phones.
Very different then the more conservative type of Amish you find in say east Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Thank you Peter and the Amish family who invited us to their home. I think the Amish way of life is a more natural and normal way of life as opposed to what the English world does, but you have to get started on it when you are young. At the end of our lives, when we assess how we lived our lives, I think the Amish would feel more fulfilled because their way of life is more meaningful and heartfelt. Having fantastic pies and homemade ice cream tops it too!

Apart from that, their lives aren't much different from the life in the Romanian village I grew up in. We didn't have many possessions, but we had our family, our friends, our own vegetable gardens, our animals, good healthy food, good wine and schnapps, good clean air and water, a full bright view of the Milky Way, and a good night's sleep, basically all things that Westerners pay good money to experience these days.
As kids we used to play in the woods, go fishing in the creek, and play football all day long on Sundays. During summer break, we used to have breakfast, get on our bikes and come home in the evening, hungry, all dusty or muddy, with a few scrapes and big smiles on our faces. Our parents didn't know where we were the whole day, and they didn't stress about it.
Nowadays everyone is chasing after bigger houses, more expensive cars and the latest iphones, so they get in debt, then work their whole life in polluted cities, in stressful environments to pay those debts. It's funny how nowadays so many people know more about some dumbass celebrities than they do about their relatives and friends.

As a 55 year old man, I can identify to some extent with these people. From time to time, and more as I get older, I reminisce about when I was a kid and how simple life was back then. No internet, no social media, not 24-hour TV with hundreds of channels. Not many luxuries and actual hard work. Being active outside. So many things I don't see younger generations enjoy. And, maybe it is coincidence, but all of these things were supposed to make our lives better and it hasn't worked out that way. There is something romantic about how these people live, and I do admire their resolve to keep these traditions alive the best they can.

@@chamboyette853 I am also 56 yrs. old and am so very glad that I grew up without this internet for almost half of my life. We actually rode our bikes if we needed to get somewhere. Our parents weren't at our disposal to take us just because we felt entitled. We lived in the moment. When we took a picture, we had to take it to have it developed and you got what you got. I look at those photos from time to time and in almost all of them, we were smiling.

I think one question that's missing when you interview different types of people is how they relate to love and to preventing loneliness because pretty much every culture is a manifestation of how to find cohesion and not feel left out. After growing up in Chicago I can absolutely confirm that the vapid, cesspool of large cities is the exact opposite of happiness and comfort. Simplicity is the key to health and happiness. Not to mention plenty of nature and fresh air. The Amish were right all along.
I’m currently near chicago. I always say the major cities are an illusion. You visit it and it’s cool cause you go to a major or well kept site. Then you drive down Cicero or Harlem and realize it’s just sad. We have a select few people in the world reaping the benefits at the cost of people dying under the overpass. We lost touch with community.
