Thanks for this video Jeff. I've found that when smoking I'm able to know what I need to do and feel enthusiastic to get going, but once I'm back in normal mode (unmedicated) it gets increasingly difficult to maintain consistency. I've read that people with ADHD have a dopamine deficiency. This could explain the weed high bringing temporary clarity and drive but the drop after making it even more difficult than before. So you can end up in this negative loop of making plans feeling like this time will be different but finding your focus only worsens, leading to negative self-talk.

Ive cut right back from when I commented two weeks ago. I've been forcing myself to wait until set times and only smoke a set amount. Feel horrible at the moment, I can feel my blood circulating. Even less motivation than before. But in another couple of weeks I should start to feel good again. Gonna keep tapering off until I'm only smoking one cone a day at night.

I found that cannabis added novelty to the symptom of boredom in the short term. @@AttentionTalkVideo I found it easiest to stop medicating with alchohol. Cannabis was my reward for having a long day at work, getting home, time to take my dog for our second 1.5 mile hike of the day. Caffeine on the other hand was a recommendation of my pediatrician to my mom when I was in second grade and she found out my desk was placed away from all the other kids because I wasn't paying attention and was distracting the other students and figiting all the time. I saw an online psychiatrist recently and they were convinced I'm suffering from depression even interrupting me when I said I'm not depressed as if she new me better than I do after 30 minutes of a zoom meeting. Trying to remember what it felt like to be me before 2nd grade has been a challenge and I realized yes I was feeling driven by a motor before my mom put me on coffee(for instance). So I'm going to see a psychiatrist in person and even though I've been struggling since October at this new job I started in June of last year and my appointment isn't until April 24th I'm taking this time to wean myself off of coffee and journaling to get more in touch with my symptoms and trying to remember what life was like before I was put on a noncontrolled stimulant.

@@shotzvfx3738 I was never addicted to tobacco but I knew that before I quit weed I had to substitute it with healthier forms of self-soothing so that another addiction didnt fill that vacuum. I went to yoga where I was able to cry and release emotions and memories. It helped me appreciate that my body's emotions as intelligent and informational, even when they're overwhelming. I went to group therapy (Adult Children of Alcoholics) and that helped me understand the emotional abuse I was trying to survive as a child. I went to Marijuana Anonymous to connect with other people that also wanted to quit.
After I stopped smoking I would get anxiety in my gut so I drank sparkling water to soothe it. Eventually I understood that I had silenced my gut emotions for so long that they were overwhelming me with that anxiety so slowly I learned to accept those emotions as information and not be so overwhelmed by it. My trust in myself got stronger as a result.
About 3 years later i lost a job and thats what pushed me to get my ADHD diagnosis. My psychiatrist and i found Vyvanse was a good fit but I also found that addressing my ADHD brought to the surface some underlying depression that was caused by how worthless i felt for how much i struggled.
So now im on vyvanse and wellbutrin and it feels like a good fit.

@@shotzvfx3738 Long story short: the problem isn't us or our addiction. The problem is that we have harmful self-soothing techniques that require us asking around for a lot of support to change, but also accepting ultimate responsibility for our choices.
Harm reduction was instrumental for me because it meant i didn't have to punish myself for not following a perfect path.
Also, sobriety doesn't happen in our head, it happens in our body. We will never think our way out of addiction. I had lots of looping thoughts that made me miserable and drove me crazy because i couldn't trust myself.
I had to learn to trust all the emotions that my body brought to me like a parent supervising their kid on the playground. Not interrupting, just looking over to make sure they're safe.

I used to smoke weed in high school and, while it helped me short term with anxiety caused by school, performance expectations, life in general, I noticed I got "slow" after a while. I couldn't think or focus at all, I couldn't process any information, everything felt blurry. Eventually I got back to "normal" after I stopped smoking. But the times when I'm able to get straight to work, I completely forget about the joint and get lost in the coding. Then it's suddenly 10pm again and I've written 5000 lines of code, I'm hungry af but I'm only half a joint down.
It also means I have trouble getting motivated to start working because I know that my whole day is going to be gone especially if I have something planned in the evening.

I would like to state that many forms of medication have its ups and downs. While I was medicated with things like Vivantzs and Riddelin, they brought negative side effects like suisidal thoughts and aggression. Canabis in my opinion is a much more natural withdrawl as well with easy to manage symptoms like hunger or drowsiness. Used in measured proportion like conventional medicine, it can be used as an effective natural medication for ADHD. Its important to remember to ise your creative mind and continue to self motivate yourselves towards things

    • @AttentionTalkVideo
      @AttentionTalkVideo  Před 10 měsíci +3

susidal thoughts and aggression are not good at all. I don't know how extensively you discussed this with your physcian. If it was exhaustive and you reached your conclusion... GREAT. Often people try meds, have a bad experience, and jump to conclusions. The thing about ADHD meds is to get the right med, in the right dose, with the right timing is more of an art... trail and error process which people don't realize.
My point is... your lived experience is your experience. Just want others who read the post to do the work with their physcian to come to their conclusion... as opposed to jumping to a conclusion.

I used to smoke weed all day every day. Got diagnosed with adhd, take medication during the day, but I still smoke in the late evening. Can’t seem to break that habit, although I wish I could. At the same time, I get tired of trying to solve the problem ever since being diagnosed.
In short, this never ending “problem” of trying to solve evening smoking gets tiring. You know what helps? Just living and not caring so much about every little thing. I’m at the point now that I just want to live my life, and shaming myself doesn’t help. If I’m happy, wtf is the problem?! I’ve made a lot of great steps to improve my life, and this is one part I can’t seem to beat.
And then I look at the world, all the addiction that exist (whether substance or none substance), I start to realize that everybody has a problem. So why am I being so hard on myself? Alcohol is Wilde used on a daily basis for everything under the sun, so what’s the issue? Nothing is perfect, so I think I’ll just accept it.

People with ADHD struggle with getting to sleep and stopping using their phones (I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve stayed up till 4am watching CZcams because I just can’t get enough of the stimulation that the screen gives my brain) but Cannabis genuinely helps me calm down and put my phone down, it makes sleep feel rewarding to my brain and has actually helped improve my quality of life. I’m not saying it’s perfect for everyone or that it’s a must have thing, but vilification is just dumb, and people that do that are equally moronic.

A lot of this seems to be based on the developing brain - I am coming up to 40 now my brain is done it's developing. Can you take the developing brain aspect out of the "is it good or bad" question for people who are well past that? I get that that is so important - for the younger people who still have a developing brain. I use it very sparingly for pain management so is it really hurting me in the long run? Unfortunately i started reading about Marijuanna and ADHD/ ADHD in Adulthood after the fact. My addictive mind took marijuanna to another level. Now if i don’t use it i feel agitated and intense… i wish i know what to do.

I've tried many many medications over the year in terms of ADD and lot of them have worked for me but also produce horrific side effects, I'm talking severe anxiety, panic attacks, loss of appetite, hand tremors, nightmares, high bp etc.. Then I tried weed quite recently and although I understand the long term risks and I wouldn't use it as a medication for my ADD, it still seems that when I have that 1 deadline that I really need to get done but am struggling to focus. A few hits of weed really tends to make the process easier. Again not using for medication but only when I really am struggling to get something done.

It takes 30 days for the brain to fully recover after using marijuana. Then you can continue using until you feel bad again. I have ADHD and I do this every time. Together with amphetamine it gives a positive experience. The main thing is to choose the right dose of psychostimulants and not abuse marijuana. So I take it as a "strong" medicine

I have no doubt in my mind that it has made me have less symptoms of adhd and allows me to slow down and dial into what is going on around me. Weed is always put in a negative light compared to adhd medications that often times have much more negative effects and make me personally feel very depressed after using them for a short period of Time.

Im 42 and been using THC at a daily basis since age 16 to try to stay calm and in check as I have severe ADHD, born by an heroin addict that never cared for me was a probable cause along with many different homes. Now my life is cluttered with a mountain of problems that allowed to stack up cause my inability to follow through projects or just paying bills in time and all sorts of avoiding behaviour through imperative periods in adulthood. It feels like Im a 20 year old still fighting teenage angst but with double the life experience of people around me. Ive lived a very fast life , never contemplating consequences more than an hour before rushing on to the next hurdle. I call my dilemma a dragonfly complex, everyday is a new day ,born again but my mind is tired and erratic, the catalogue is basically not in order so starting every day on refresh mode but the memory cache is clustered together in an incohesive manner. Memories are bashed together and I cant pinpoint what happened even the day before cause it seems a lifetime away, and distant memories are poppin up within the close day memories...Its made me a very introvert person cause I cant trust my own mind to make a logic conclusion of whats true or what is a dreamlike scenario of times past. Now Im beginning a journey of great despair and fear and finally quitting cause my life is a mess and I have 2 kids that Ive failed thus far and finally got so angry at myself that I dont even fear the depression that will eventually kick in as I realise the road is long, dark and utterly difficult but just to feel anger like this has been truly missed, as emotions have been dampened by the THC. I know I will need help doing this but refuse a chemical option as from previos experiences showed that Im very reckless with amphetamines/ritaline and antidepressants is a trap for me as I turn to my worst enemy alchohol when dopamine levels drop. Combine that with a high testosterone and disagreeable persona its bound to end in total misery. I feel like I lived a life that wasnt meant for me, in my head I was always a rockstar and not a responsible parent, Im a brilliant mind locked in a prison of responsibilities that never suited me, but reality is that this is my life now and I have kids depending on my ability to safeguard them. That is the only motivation I need but I fear the day when the results dont show I will have to stay vigilant and not succumb to the wet blanket that is THC. Its helped me alot there is no doubt, but its also made me weak and hesitant and its about time I actually performed to my ADHD ability ,let it loose, rip and tear anything is better than this chokehold. Maybe I should write a book with this loooong outlay as proof but yeah, there is a lot untapped potential within and its time to open the lid and maybe one day im not a dragonfly , just a happy and proud father that did everything he could to manage a difficult life.

When a person uses a substance like weed, nicotine, or alchol, etc. it feels good and is comfortable. When you stop you are less comfortable. "Hi Goosebumps, Cannabis use weakens executive functioning processes in the brain over time. Given that people with ADHD already have executive functioning issues, long term cannabis use can tax this already vulnerable system, leading to an increase of ADHD symptoms. The good news is that a developing brain has the ability to repair itself well (as long as one is not continually taxing it or incurred a major injury). Early use, higher frequency and higher potency are all associated with more long-term effects. Regards, Dr. Olivardia"

Just being on 1200 high I have been paranoid a couple times and had an anxiety attack once as well too. Do I still like it yes. I think because ADHD has a effect on our mental health is that weed stretches our feelings to the side but I also play the game and listen to music and it’s like my memory sometimes enhanced or remembered or forgotten not if it’s long term or short but it all depends how much THC u take in but my memory, reaction time, patience , brain and vision, and feelings are developed in all positive ways are enhanced and my reaction time and patience is also enhanced when I play call of duty and my brain thinks smarter as a play comp cod player it helps memorize off the top of my dome and perform better. My energy is enhanced too. Depression thoughts may occur but that’s what it’s like used for. Lm plus other things with symptoms or syndromes. i use a certain kind of strain to treat my adhd/anxiety and i feel it works best for me . The strain i smoke has only .5 % of thc and 20-23% of cbd . I smoke a light joint in the morning and my day is solid. I think clearly , my focus is good ..almost no anxiety . So the 0.5% of thc acts as a natural stimulant and the CBD takes care of my anxiety . I find that strain way better then my ritalin and i dont believe there is any harm in consuming such low level of thc.

Are there any studies with adult adhd people over 30 who don't used cannabis and then use it as a treatment? Usually adhd treatments have whose effects like reduced focus, iq and so on for 'normal' people as well as cannabis. But for adhd they work diametral to increase whose things. I started cannabis at early 30s and for me it works really well in really low doses with little side effects. Yeah for high doses it puts you in the couch as well, but in lower doses I function really well. Especially for bore work, which I really suffer from. You cannot compare normal people to adhd people. And knowledge from studies with a mix of people may not apply to especially for the adhd adult group. Also for people with a past of abussing use of cannabis in their early years this may not apply well, cause you're right, it may have a huge long term impact of your brain development.

Really I have autism and the ADHD and dyslexia are symptoms / side effects that come with autism.
I still smoke but I smoke only two to three hits of a joint a day and that's it. I no longer smoke to get high I smoke to even my brain out if that makes sense.
When you have autism your brain is all over the place You're almost not in touch with reality of what's going on around you with normal people. It's like they see the world one way and an event that happened one way but you see a completely different way. You don't feel the same way as other people feel we have autism when it comes to emotions sympathy empathy and things like that.
I have to keep smoking because honestly I don't like the person I am when I don't. Really what I mean is I don't like autism because that's who I am I'm autistic person and I accepted that.
Smoking is the only thing that makes me feel normal that slows my brain down enough so I can function with my family and kids and be loving caring thoughtful considerate emotionally available.
Without smoking weed I'm an ass hole, really I show sounds autism that looks like I'm an ass hole. But when I smoke I don't even really feel high I just feel like everything makes sense.
I made my mind up I'll never stop regardless of the consequences. I can't live another 40 years being a ass to my family being emotionally blocked off living with all the traits and disadvantages of being autistic and haven't ADHD.
I'd rather live now and have a decent quality of life that is filled with love consideration thoughtfulness for the next 40 years.
Whatever the consequences are I'll deal with them when they come it'll probably hit me hard when I get older but at least I will lift my younger years and a better state with the people that matter

I try and keep as open a mind as i can. This topic is interesting. I get posts on both extremes. Generally research (as i understand it) is clear. Cannabis isn't an ADHD treatment. Still all research can't always trump a persons experience and thus i'm open to the fact it can be helpful in some way to people.
That said, i like your post!!! There is a level of self-awareness AND self-control that i admire. Given your conditions (which are challenging) i can see how you could come to your conclusions.

I'm 34 and only just connecting the dots that I have ADHD. I self medicate with weed constantly, tried concerta recently and it really helps. My doctor is not cool with it, I've tried to stop but my medication doesn't last through my whole day and when I got stressed out I took up an offer to smoke at work. Told my doctor and tried to talk about a different dosage or a strategy for what I can do when the meds have worn off but I was instead met with a threat to not get me if I test positive, but I know it's in me for 30 days and the future is a failed test. I feel hopeless, took my whole life this far too put the pieces together and figure out why life was so hard.

the challenge is stimulants are a controlled substances (people abuse them). In that context Physcians are on alert. This results in them being VERY causus. There are times they should be and times where they shouldn't. The key is to understand where they are coming from and work towards trust.
That said, don't give up. If you are connecting the dots and find concerta is helping realize you are moving forward and managing your life more intentionally. There is no magic wand... it takes time... you are making progress. Keep learning and working on it. You can do it!

I have adhd. On prescription pills ( Ritalin ) since age 6. Took an IQ test at age 9. Result:129, took another test last year at age 30 after self medicating aka daily thc consumption for over 10 years. IQ dropped by 9 points. Which is less than average. Fluid IQ drops as you get older even in people that don't drink or take illegal drugs. Ergo: weed don't make you dumb. And the benefits outweigh the negatives!

I find that if I use it like medication then it helps in most aspects of my adhd.
Before cannabis I was on meds morning afternoon and night. Still never helped me anywhere near the amount cannabis does.
Like everything it is good in moderation. If over used it won’t work the way you want it too the same way if you take paracetamol twice a day for a month. Then get a headache. That paracetamol isn’t going to help at all.
See I use to use cannabis everyday all day long I would smoke nearly 17 grams per day just to stay active.
When I actually did the reasearch on cannnabis I found out that it’s better if used as a tool instead of a constant.
Ever since I only smoke cannabis as and when I need to but always after 8pm.
The side effects like reduced iq etc etc have resided and my adhd and autism is a lot more manageable.

I agree with all but the loss of IQ points. Many studies have shown that not to be true. Additionally, something not mentioned here is, I believe we need to be asking which is worse? Because of marijuana helps the anxiety to a point where they can concentrate or just not in pain, the other side effects may be worth it. We're all probably prescribed something, and most have much worse side effects... Which is why more people are switching over. I just wish you'd mentioned this part because I can take a large guess that all the medication for ADHD has much worse or equal side effects. I'm prescribed Adderall and am a vet in college. The struggle is real.

Life is complex. It is challenging to communicate complex things in a simple way. There are short term side effects and long term side effects. Short term cannabis can reduce anxiety. The decision to use cannabis is an individual one based on quality of life.

As I mentioned prior before, if you're kind of mention the deficits or the problems with THC, you also need to be giving the positive sides for people so they can have an accurate representation of which problem they actually want to fix. Because everyone's problems are different and some people's anxiety may be much worse than their other persisting problems, so yes, they may have some short-term problems or long-term problems, but you're going to have long-term problems with every other alternative.

Ok lets put it in a different light... Its a chemical imbalance witch causes a natural hyper drive sensitivity to kick in. So everyone is seeking a sunstance that will take them out of hyperdrive and back on the highway (flow state) where we can function. Many things will do this but none are a permanent solution. Half of the battle is self control and what we eat or intake as a natural way to offset our imbalance. The other is learning to be aware of the imbalance and only take things accordingly like how a diabetic watches their sugar. Adhd is not going away so a multi angled approach is needed. Ive lived with adhd and obd my whole life and now can teach and focus because of this mindset. Yes the squirrels are always there but it's your choice whether or not you chase them.

How is this different from the amphetamine prescriptions "professionals" are dolling out. It's unhelpful to hear professionals explain that treating a symptom doesn't equate to curing an ailment.
    We're well aware
Any "data" from timelines previous to legalization i.e. 60's, 70's, 90's early 2000's, regarding THC content should be heavily scrutinized. Further, the restrictions on research made the volume of useful data abysmal
Let's all remember that most of what we're hearing regarding Marijuana is filtered through several generations who simply acquiesced to the rhetoric of illicit drug shaming. The evidence in the video is anecdotal at best with zero reference (which should be easy for Harvard professors to provide).
TLDR: This video lacks substance to people looking for answers instead of validation. And weed is awesome as long as you don't consider it a cure... you know, like everything stimulating.

In the end individuals can make their own choice. Personally i'd prefer to play the odds and understand what is out there and deal with substances that have a methodology behind their formulation... course that is my opinion. I respect you are entitled to yours.

Agreed, in medicinal dosages it is possible for cannabis to be productive long-term, and is greatly dependent on the terpene profile according to your condition/symptoms (different weed gives different effects as a result, as such that terpinolene and pinene having a positive impact to concentration, memory, and focus respectively). This comes from first hand experience, in replacement to 3 trials of anti-depressants being ineffective over long periods of time.

Weed hasn’t really gotten stronger, the problem is the RATIOS of cannabinoids has been bred to be different. So the BALANCE of the natural plant in some cultivars is not as it was.
