I met Russia's second Stalin 🇷🇺

- Filmed prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Russian history contains two great leaders to which all others aspire: Peter the Great and Joseph Stalin. It is difficult to imagine a figure whose legacy more sharply divides Western and Russian civilisations. While deeply reviled in the West for his murder of thousands of opponents and dissidents, a genocidal man-made famine in Ukraine and mass deportations, he enjoys great popularity in modern Russia, where his reputation has been rehabilitated over the decades. He defeated Nazi Germany and built the Soviet Union into a world power through urbanisation and industrialisation.
Many Russians long for those times. Today, we meet one of those people. Join me as we travel into the hills of Dagestan to visit the great Stalin statue of Mallakent and meet the man behind it, a figure referred to by his own son as “the second Stalin.”
Since the filming of this video, Putin has invaded Ukraine. It is clear that Putin wishes to add his name to the pantheon of great Russian leaders. The parallels with Stalin, whose reputation Putin has constantly rehabilitated during his presidency, are clear: the expansionary and imperialist posture, the brutalisation of Ukraine, the rhetoric of “Nazis” and “fascism”. Stalin’s shadow yet hangs over us all.

Thanks :) I’m glad you enjoyed it.
great storytelling man
awesome
really loved Ustarkhan, he has tons of stories to tell
Yeah he’s a proper sound geezer. Doesn’t mince his words
I’d have to think that Ustarkhan sees through Putin’s appropriation - from those who I’ve talked to in Russia that are Communist Party affiliated, their opinions on Stalin are greatly influenced by their ideological and political convictions as opposed to being a surface-level fascination with and admiration for the man. That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of Russians who like Stalin due to staunch nationalism, but I don’t think Ustarkhan is a Russian nationalist (though he certainly is a Soviet nationalist 😁). Great videos!
I think you’re right. He seemed to view Putin quite correctly as a kleptocrat and opportunist. Dagestan has had some of the more lively protests in Russia since the war began; I like to think that Ustarkhan is an agitator :) I’m glad you enjoy the videos and thanks for the support
Dagestani's drinking alcohol, that's a first! 😳
And don't forget that under Stalin the military murdered over 30 Million slavic people and this seems to intentionally be left out of common core learning in schools!
Those Slavs died fighting the Nazis to save Europe and the world.
