How (NOT) to travel Central Asia 🇰🇬🇹🇯
Our adventure starts before dawn with an escape from the irradiated Soviet mining town of Min-Kush. Leaving the roentgens behind, we soon find ourselves back in the Kyrgyz heartlands and ahead of us lies a long and winding road to be travelled with the kindness of the Kyrgyz people, a sacred mountain and a brush with fate. Join me on a perilous quest across Central Asia.

At the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were both producing nuclear warheads at rates never seen before or since. Both countries bristled with tens of thousands of missiles, and they were willing to use them. In the USSR’s case, research, uranium enrichment and warhead assembly took place in Russia, but the bottom of the supply chain - uranium extraction - was cent...

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan. Although the Kyrgyz people were largely settled into a life of collectivised agriculture by the Soviet Union, some still lead a traditional nomad life. After a hard winter in the lowland plains, these families bring their animals up into lush mountain pastures, or “jailoos”, at the first budding of spring. Kyrgyz nomadic life is built around horseflesh and this relationsh...

Ancient Persian influence in modern Central Asia is visible not only in its culture and language, but also in its landscape. By the Oxus river, atop a dusty hillock in a windswept desert lies one of the earliest known examples of a dakhma, or a tower of silence. These towers play an essential, if somewhat macabre, role in the disposal of bodies in the Zoroastrian tradition. Once commonplace thr...

Girded by dramatic mountain ranges and having more in common culturally with the Persian civilisations of Greater Iran than the Turkic nomads of the steppe, no part of the former Soviet Union, nor any region of Central Asia, holds the same enigmatic appeal as Tajikistan. Many of the great Persian dynasties ruled over the modern territory of Tajikistan and the people there speak a dialect of Per...

They call Azerbaijan “the land of fire.” The Absheron peninsula is dotted with natural eternal flames which are fed by the rich gas deposits that lie beneath the earth. Nowadays the term is more a matter of political sloganeering, but the fires must have had a special significance for the ancients, particularly during the time of Zoroastrianism, which regards fire as sacred. Follow the stony steel-grey Qudyalchay river upstream out of drab Quba and into the mountains. The buildings become sparser and the mountains loom higher. I'm so sorry to hear about the accident, scary stuff! Glad you and everyone else was okay! Looking forward to hearing more from you, hope the rides go a bit smoother this time! 😅
stay safe out there big dog. terrific videos. what a dream to explore like you do!
Of course, the locals were suspicious of your presence with your foolish "cover story Request". Nobody is that foolish to believe, that you travel all the way from UK to their village, just to hear their "language". Incredible. What is your real Agenda ? You look very suspicious to me, just by studying your facial expressions and your Eyes, and of course your intrusive (agenda based) "questions" give you away immediately.
brilliant video
As a retired university professor who studied the region, I find these videos to be among the best I.have ever seen
i love this really really much, ive been reeding russian for 3-4 years and still love it. I have subscribed ^^
That fruit is a quince. It's quite a hard fruit. In Hungary where I live, they make a compote or a jelly out of it. Personally, not my cup of tea.
I wouldn't mind the subtitles a bit bigger. Watching on the phone. Appreciate your russian. You're not Bald and Bankrupt, but maybe it can work for me :-)

Just found your channel, love it mate ☝️ new subscriber 👍
I love this content, thank you very much for showing this. This is exactly what i wan't to experience myself. Ive been reading russian for 3-4 years, guess i need to wait until the condlikt is over.
Great video bro , your Russian is quite good as well
INSTANT SUB. AMAZING 😮
can someone write in russian what he said 45:55, the last word?😂
The word is “дебил”.

Dude you need a bald head and u will be the next baldandbankrupt, enjoyed your video, only maybe in future try to be more open with the people, they all were surprisingly open to you but u seemed kind of shy or just quiet, more energy in the conversations and it will be perfect. Btw very good russian, are u related to any russian speaking relatives? Субскрайб от меня

Good that nothing severe happened. I think the bigger problem is the driving, not the roads.
You're right, of course. The driving is garbage and certainly the most dangerous part of making these videos.
Man that is mad as fuck brother, I hope that you that you have more luck and safer travels in the next leg of your journey. Love the videos, amazing stories, people and scenery. Hope you're well, and continuing to be well.
Thanks for the kind words :) Glad you're enjoying the content. Fortunately, I can report that the rest of the trip along through the Pamirs was less calamitous. On which, more videos soon.
Amazing video keep up the work, hope you are alright from that crash I was recently filim in Russia and Philipines had a bit of a sketchy moment in the slums of Tondo Manila.
Thanks man, I appreciate it :) These things happens from time to time. Occupational hazard, I suppose...
oh my god what an episode

i really appreciate your videos of adventures in central Asia, especially walking on the rugged roads alone, which is one of my dream to wander around Central Asia like you did. You are living in my dream, my friend. Congraculatins

Oh My F###### Goodness! what a rollercoaster ride this episode turned out to be! A standing room only, vomit inducing ride out of irradiated Min-Kush .▼. Jumping into the back of a Bishkek bound, open top truck trailer .▲. Almost head stomping 1 of 4 hidden fellow passengers .▼. Epic vistas of the Suusamyr valley along the route .▲▲. A close call with Hypothermia due to the wind, rain and cold .▼▼▼. Catching a ride all the way to Osh from the Kumis junction .▲▲. Ticketed Speeding driver, puking babushka .▼. Safe arrival in Osh, and a well earned 48 hour rest .▲▲▲. A visit to Sulaiman-Too Sacred mountain, where plans to travel the mighty Pamir highway are told .▲▲▲. bloodied face, picture fades to black .▼▼▼. A harrowing account of plunging off a mountain road to river below .▼▼▼▼▼. Every passenger escaping the Opel Zafira .▲▲▲▲▲▲▲. Whisked off to Dushanbe, bloodied and bruised, a fake pair of Raybans the only casualty .▲▲▲. Shaken but unperturbed sign-off, not wishing to disappoint .▲▲▲▲. Thank you once again for taking us along the road less travelled. Sooooo glad nobody was seriously hurt! I hope your adventure down the M41 is much much much much much safer. Safety always comes first, content later. Onwards!
That's quite a synopsis! Roughly mirrors my enjoyment of the whole thing too, although that truck ride with the rain was unreasonably bad. Glad to get out of it largely unscathed. There's plenty of accidents on that road, and many are not so lucky. I am happy to say that the rest of the trip on the M41 was without injury, although it did involve a close call of a different kind... Thanks for the support and kind words once again :)
Having also flipped a car in the last two years (avoiding t-boning someone after misreading a traffic light perfectly framed in the setting sun), I hope the experience does not put you off all your travels. Happy that your injuries were also not severe, or anyone's, and that the travel is still ongoing.
That sounds like a scary one. It's definitely not an experience worth repeating. It did put me off a bit, but I continued the trip anyway into the Pamirs, of which there will videos very soon. Thanks for the support.
i'm glad you're okay bro, great video!
Yeah, me too. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Whatever doesn't kill you, makes for a great story later. Thank goodness no one got seriously hurt. Plenty of silver linings on this adventure though, like the view from Sulaiman-Too.
Indeed. There's plenty of accidents on that road and some aren't so lucky. Onward.
Good man and good people
Doing my part to not end up in a river in tajikistan. Good content and keep it up
You'll thank me later :)
First comment, Finally, This was yet another very interesting video, I hope the crash didn't scare you off from stepping into other people's cars, Also i wanted to ask, How is it you can go on these trips? How do you pay for all of this? And how much does it cost you, I am wondering because its been my life long dream to do the exact same thing once i got the money, I'm just 18 but i would love to start asap with travelling the world and recording all of it.
Thanks for the support man :) It did put me off a bit, but I continued the trip anyway, of which there will be more videos very soon. I work online, so it's a bit easier for me to do these trips, but I meet plenty of people on the road who are just on holiday from conventional jobs. Central Asia is in general very affordable, especially if you opt to travel in the back of a rickety truck lol. You could do a good month-long trip for well under $1k, if you tried to do it cheaply. The website Caravanistan is an essential reference for planning any kind of trip in Central Asia.
just stumbled upon this channel. why does all his demeanor, movement, way of speaking in the intro remind me so much of Kurt Caz? Seems like a copy. interesting video nevertheless.
Just found your channel. Wow what an opener lol you have yourself a new subscriber. Awesome vid seriously. I’ll be looking forward to the next one my friend.
Thanks man. Glad you enjoyed it and welcome aboard :) Plenty more on the way.
Would have loved to explore there. Great video!

And don't forget that under Stalin the military murdered over 30 Million slavic people and this seems to intentionally be left out of common core learning in schools!
Those Slavs died fighting the Nazis to save Europe and the world.

DON'T WORRY THE CRUSADES, WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF STEEL AND BEETLES UNDER THE RED STAR, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE WHO WILL NOT ALLOW THE DARKNESS TO SWALLOW THE WORLD!!!🤣
Love this video. I'm into Urban Exploration (photography) and Russia is such a gem when it comes to that. Regarding the chimney. I don't think it's specific for nuclear processing. I've seen those also at an abandoned steel factory in Belgium. Keep up the awesome content
Thanks, Henk :) Yes, the FSU is so good for this kind of stuff, although some of it is very hard to get though, eg. Tkvarcheli thermal power plant in Abkhazia.
Brother this is amazing content. Just keep continuing your soviet adventures, never stop. Lots of love and support from India:))))
