I’ve been plugging the headset usb dongle to the front since the beginning, because I thought it might not be good with the heat, glad to know I wasn’t wrong.😅 thanks for the video mate 👌🏻
Same. It made the most sense to me. Figured it made it look cleaner having any wires in the back anyway.
Yep, same for my gaming PC.
Same here I never plugged my USB in the back at all since it’s not a good idea anyway and that where the fan vent is pushing the air out and the front where it should be at anyway to be begin with
It's embarrassing how many people lack common sense by plugging it in the back near the exhaust vents. 😑

I have the pulse 3D headset and plugged it in at the back of the PS5 before and had the problems you mentioned. Luckily I came to my senses and plugged it in at the front and had no problems since. This video is a must watch for so many PS5 users.
It's the USB 3.0... that's the only difference
The problem is the headset, it's garbage.
@@nsnebris8228 the headset is pretty fantastic actually, the problem is when it’s plugged into the back and it’s too enclosed. With proper airflow/space it’s a non-issue.
it's a must watch for every consolero. had the same issue with PS4 pro. and im pretty sure this issue is on every console having an usb slot at back
It's funny because I had this issue days ago luckily came to the same conclusion before referring online and was fine but now I'm seeing this video randomly lmao
Great tip. I like some others in the comments automatically used the front slot because of the heat in the back. Seemed like easy logic at the time. Glad it made sense for so many by default.
To prevent the overheating of the dongle from the back of the console, you can use a USB extender to dive to divert it away from the back.
Or just use the front
@@dahlolimfunny my toddler says no to the front USB :)
Came down to the comments to post the same thing. My cat likes jump onto the shelf in front of my consoles, so this would certainly be the safest option.
As long as the extender is of reasonable quality, there is really little chance of it causing issues.
@@StealthyJim it comes w the extender in the box. hello fellow Sony users!
@@WieserChri Why is your ps5 in reach of your toddler? Thats asking for so much to go wrong.
As a PS5 and Pulse 3D user, I can confirm this. I used the back USB ports in the beginning but I had connectivity and sound issues. I was worried that I had a faulty unit but when I checked the USB dongle, it was so warm that I immediately moved it to the front USB port and having no issues since then.
I have a different headset but I had the exact same experience. I have a Turtle Beach headset. I had just gotten it and I loved how it sounded playing audio from my phone and from the PS5, and especially how it could play audio from both at the same time, when it actually worked with the PS5 that is. It didn't take long to start experiencing connectivity and sound issues. I thought my awesome new headset was defective. It was the first really expensive headset I'd ever bought and I was very upset but it occurred to me that I should do what I would do if I was using it with a computer, switch USB ports. I did that and the issues immediately stopped. It hadn't occurred to me that it was the heat that caused the issues. I was just happy it was good.
Don't place the back of the console near a wall and you'll be fine. The back of mine points to the centre of the room and its quite quiet and cool on quality mode of Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores.
Same
Can you leave it while on rest mode or do you remove it??
@@jaddark3898 I never remove it and I always leave my PS5 on rest mode.
As a long-time PC gamer, one of my go-to troubleshooting methods for USB is to try a different port. Also, always have the dongle on the same side of the machine to where you're using it. I once had to run a USB extender cord so my dongle could detect my mouse reliably.
This is the most pretentious sounding way to tell people you do the most basic step in all of troubleshooting history first.
Being a 'PC Gamer' I'm sure you also eat soup with a spoon, and drink water out of a cup. What wisdom will you share with us all next, Mr. 'Personal Computer Gamer' sir?
@Terraphice We’d be besties! 😂. Bastard!
Jus use a wired mouse
@@Terraphice had to ruin the man's whole career💀
@@Terraphicethis is the most pretentious sounding way to tell people that you cannot afford a PC 😃
Haven't had this issue with my PS5, but I personally like having those dongles in the rear of my PC and I was having connectivity issues with a wireless mouse and keyboard. The keyboard would drop inputs and such. Finally moved it to the front of the tower and haven't had an issue since. It's amazing what difference a little over a foot and unobstructed airspace can do.
To prevent any accidents with the dongle sticking out, I decided to be a little more creative with the position of mine. With the GTbeans 24pin magnetic USB-C rightangle adapter, I use the same on my tablet, so I can very easily switch between the two. I have no problems with this setup. Dead easy to remove and replace, and no accidental breaking of any USB ports.
I'd highly recommend it, if you don't use that USB-C in the front for anything else.
Wired accessories are usually alot more stable. Only problems i run into are setting them up the first time and obviously wire managment. I still think it is a good trade off for stability in accessories.
Spoken like a true audiophile. Bravo!
You won't believe how many wired headsets I've been through that only one side works or only high frequency sounds are transmitted
Was about to grab a pulse headset for the days of play sale and this pops up. The gaming gods always looking out for me. Love this channel straight to the point no gimmicks no bs.
Gotta love the glasscock 😊
this is one of the most useful videos you've made, hadn't thought about that dongle overheating on a hot day but it is a real concern
@realJohnglasscock👉 telegram👈 reported
I had this EXACT problem. I thought it was due to the dongle being behind the console (out of line of sight), so it moved it to the front port and it has been great ever since.
I’ve always plugged the usb at front just because it looks cool and no wires at the front. But good to have you reminding about it!
Wow this make perfect sense because I have been experiencing this with my pulse 3D headset, recently moved the dongle to the front so hopefully that helps, thanks John and love your content bro
I got my PS5 in 2020 and I used two HS with it: The Pulse 3D and Steelseries Arctis 1. Since then until today I had no probs with them no matter where I put the dongle in.
I always use the one on the front. Works fine for me. I have the turtle beach stealth 700 gen 2 which has a low profile dongle so it's not too much of a stress point.
That dongle doesn’t make any sense because you aren’t moving around your console. It’s not a laptop
@@stevemuzak8526 I was referring to it being a shorter dongle and the fact that it's less of a risk for someone to walk by and run into it thus breaking it ad possibly damaging the usb port
@Cole Demo Yes. I have my controller charging cable coming off the back.
@@mullinsjm1 same
I have one of those too. Do you find that there's an insane amount of static on the home screen?
I've noticed the heat that the console has in the back port area. I always take my my wireless USB completely out when I'm not using my headphones. Also with an addition storage M.2 slot there's more heat introduced to the system. I'm currently adding some things to combat that. Such as a Sabrent heat sink replacement for the M.2 panel. Vented Dark plates and a Scry Artic exhaust cooler.
You can also use a usb extention cable if you don'y want it in the front. A good usb cable is insulated so it will not draw as much heat from the vents to the dongle as it would wih the dongle near the vents.
Been plugging it in up front but my audio kept cutting out. I had to get usb-c adapter and plug it in there. Now it works.
Just ordered the Pulse 3D headset. Thanks for the heads up
I have the 3D Pulse my self, great headset
@@SC0RPI0NFURY I heard the mic isnt too good?
I've experienced issues with it plugged in the front as well. I was still connected but the light on the transmitter was flashing and the sound quality got very muffled
I used to get the same issue. But I used a 3 inch usb extension and that has helped! I thought this video was going to mention that.
@@DarkSolidKnight can you tell us which extension you used?
@@tee2008j I honestly don’t remember where I got this cable. But it’s just a 3 inch male go female USB extension. I’m guessing it came with a camcorder?
I recommend cord to controller. The USB ports and hdmi ports are super easy to disconnect from the actual board.
I used to plug the PS5 Pulse 3D usb at the back port as well. However, i changed my mind and started plugging it on the front after the USB became very hot while being plug at the rear after playing for 3 hours of Elden Ring. Thankfully, i didn’t experience any audio problems . I might test it again if it’s always like that. At the same time, got to do some system cleaning to improve the airflow.
I just have a usb extension cable connected to the back port. That way it's easier to connect any peripheral to the console. It makes things easier since I also use my PS headset for PC.
Or just plug it into the front
Informative video. I have encountered interference issues in relation to external hard drives in neighbouring USB ports previously. Research has shown the 2.4hz signals can be interrupted by USB ports. My fix for this was to buy a short USB extension cable, plug the dongle into that and your interruptions should stop. Thought I'd just share this for anyone encountering similar issues.
@Text me on telegram 👉 @John_glasscock1 boy
hmmm well i haven't had any problems so far, i think ill just keep it in the back because it looks alot better and i wouldnt want to accidentally bump it
but thanks for the info anyway. ill probably try this first if i ever have any audio problems
I had problems with interference from external hdd. I bought a USB extension, ran it to another shelf and plugged in my dongle. This will also help with the overheating problem and potentially breaking the dongle from it sticking out so far.
Bro, every damn PS user should follow you. Even Sony should follow your channel, cause they don't pay detailed attention to its customers.
GG, you've helped me big time with my ps5.
Facts
I had major audio issues with sound going in and out with the 3-D pulse headphones when I first got them.
Bought a type c-to-a adapter and plugged through the type c port on the front and haven't ran into any problems. It's great
How this can solve the problem? I will buy and try it thank you :)
Man, mine kept getting choppy audio. I tried multiple adapters and different ports, but it never seemed to work 100%. I even bought the black one when it came out, but it made no difference.
I did the same thing, however Sony absolutely needs to fix this issue. Using a Pulse 3D headset should be seamless with the PS5. They haven't addressed the problem since release and it's completely egregious
I was about to toss the headsets in the garbage.. thanks for the video, I changed the dongle to the front and I haven't had any issues since.
I use to have my dongle in the back and my pulse use to go in and out. When I figured that might be the problem and moved it to the front. It was super hot. I learned my lesson.
I’ve never experienced any problems with my headset by putting the dongle in the back, but I still stopped putting it back there. One day I was moving the PlayStation and felt how hot the dongle was. Figured I’d try to avoid a potential problem. Thanks for the info, now I know it was for the best to move it. 👊
I have... an opposite problem. One of the earmuffs have... a slight static from time to time, and I've always plugged the USB into the front port. It's never occurred to me to plug it into one of the ports in the back.
they are using 2.4 ghz instead of bluetooth for lower latency but that introduces noise.
I have experienced this static noise… what i did is now i put my pulse headset inside a closet… somehow that solved my issue in a day and since then i hear no static noise
@@MonsterAssassin18 that is correct…
When this problem came i was ready to sell my pulse headset but then i tried this one thing and it worked and since then i always put my headset and controllers in closet instead of outside on a shelf or something
pro tip: instead of plugging it into the front, you can also use a USB extension and not have it stuck out the front like some kind of horn. it will pull it away from the exhaust and it won't overheat
I was asking myself about that ! Thanks for the info... I got no issue so far but now I know it could be possible.
And I don't understand why there's not at least 2 USB port in the front of the console :(
i have experienced this, and yes it does not work perfectly when there is major heat involved. i still have it at the back of the ps5 but with better vented location for my console.
Just plug it in the front bro
@@dream6562 i kinda like it clean from the front 😂
@@nuaimi I mean would you rather have a clean front or have your headset working consistently
@@dream6562 i mean now it’s perfectly fine, just the location of the console was inclosed from all the sides thats why there was heat at the back. now the headset is at a 💯 and the setup is at a 💯
@@nuaimi but hear me out, plugging it in from the front
Sounds to me more like a wireless signal issue than anything else, as a rule of thumb, you want those RF transceivers to be in direct line of sight and in close range, as they usually don't have good antennas (to save cost, space and have better aesthetic for the most part, people just don't like an antenna sticking out, even though it's still the most viable effective solution) and these devices usually have to operate in high RF noise environment (a lot of devices operating in the same frequency allocation) so the range is usually a lot more limited than people anticipated.
No because I use a wired headset plugged into the back of my PS5 and it literally melted the cord. It’s definitely a heat issue. The internet is riddled with people experiencing this issue
Glad that I put it in the front from the beginning because it was easier to switch to pc :D
I have not run into this issue yet with my pulse 3D headset and I plug into the back port. Its very good to know though. Now I'll know what to do if I ever have a problem.
Alternatively, you could use a USB cable/adapter that you plug into the rear port and hide under the PS5 where it's out of sight, or somewhere else where it's easier for the headphones to pick up the signal. You can plug the dongle into it. (This might be optimal for steelseries 7+ users.) This way you don't have to use the front port and you won't accidentally damage the PS5.
pro tip, use an usb extension to position the dongle far from the heat exhaust, and also put it in a position where it has a clear path with the headphone, knock two birds with one stone, well three if you consider the lower risk of front usb port damage taken out too
I figured out early on but thanks for making this video bro because people need to hear it
Great tip man, I’m going to try change positions
I've had mine since launch and plug it in the back so everything looks clean and uniform, and no problems here ( thank god😊🙏🏽 ) but that does make sense good looking out.
It’s cuz you have it in an open area
Which is good
The further the wall is from the back vents of the 5 the better air circulation
Lower heat
Runs better
Use to have mine on a desk
Shit got super Fuckin hot
I literally just retired my Pulse 3D headset and got the Artis 7P+ headset from Steelseries lol
And it’s a big upgrade
But damn it this got me worried
I HATE having things plugged into the front of the console
Yeah, my Pulse would cut out randomly when it was plugged into the rear USB ports. Works perfectly in the front USB.
Thanks for the tips, I always had my usb on the back and sometimes had issues connecting to the headset. So I just end up using the wired that came with it, but will try to put the usb on the front now.
Just get an extension cable to run the dongle from behind to the front so you shouldn't have a heat problem and the danger of someone hitting it in the front would be solved too.
The smart thing to do is use a USB extension cable to connect to the back of the PS5 and to connect the dongle to it and hide it next or behind the TV
Oh, I like that idea! I’ll have to look into that
That’s exactly what I do. I bought the steel series Arctis 1 and it actually came with an extension cable which is great. But I use it for a different reason. The dongle for the headset plugs into the usbc port on the front but the shape of the dongle blocks the other USB port lol
And for anyone who has unplugged the dongle after the PS5 has been running for some time, the USB part on the end gets very hot to the point where it can actually burn if you touch it.
Can you use the pulse 3d with other dongles? For instance I have the PlayStation 2.0 headset, would it work with that?
I got the pulse heaset since past year almost the same time that I obtained my PS5, and I used to connect it in the back of the PS5 and it almost always got issues with the connection. So, yes, I wouldn't recommend to no body to connect it in the back.
Ps5 slim doesn’t have the front usb
I use it in the back. Not had any issues since launch. After you turn on the console from rest mode if the head set was charging then it might have trouble detecting the dongle but all you need to do it’s turn the head set off and then on again and it’s back in business and you can start gaming in no time.
My Logitech headsets dongle used to get pretty warm after an hour or so of use. My ps5 sits on the middle shelf of my desk and is open to the air. Exhaust vents warm it up quick even with proper airflow. I’ve started plugging my g923 wheel into the back now and the headset in the front. So far no problems
It’s also common to have external hdd’s or ssd’s plugged to the back, this interferes with the audio as it starts to cut off. I have a small hub on the front regular usb to which I plug the cables to charge controllers, gold headset and it’s dongle. You can’t plug storage units on hubs and actually only one at a time works, and only on the USB ports on the back and the usb c on the front.
I have done this from day one. Always thought this was obvious so there wasn’t any potential interruption with the BT signal
Wow wtf, small world...my friend has your very same name, but she goes by Johnnie Glasscock?! Crazy. She lives in Az. Great review btw, good information!
I never had a problem with Steelseries Arctis7P, but gonna move it anyway as precaution. Thanks for the warning
For the price they really should build the dongle's wireless signal component into the PS5. Extra cost not everyone might need, but they also put the PSVR PS5 adapter cable in the box of every PSVR after a certain point too. It would just be a nice touch at any rate.
I don’t have the Pulse 3D headset yet but anticipate getting them when I have the extra money to spend. I hadn’t thought about this but it makes total sense and almost seems obvious when you actually describe it. Thanks for the tip, your videos are the best for newer PS5 users. (Your PS4 videos rock also)
I got the a50 plug in the back and the steel series plugged in the front. If you want to change headsets, press ps button to pull up audio and change output.
They should just release an update that allows users to use Bluetooth headsets. This would probably solve alot of issues and it already has Bluetooth built-in. And release this feature for PS4 too.
Great Video Dude Thanks
I lost my Pulse 3d headset dongle, can another dongle on Amazon work or do i have to find that exact dongle ? Or just buy a new headset ?
Spot on. Got the pulse 2wks ago and had probs straight away with disconnections . Installed dongle at the front and prob resolved. Do you think a USB extender from the back would work?
It's good I stumbled upon this video. I just got my ps5 headset.
I also own the 3D headset and have occasionally heard something similar to static or audio breakup. It doesn't happen when I first start but after long sessions will I begin to experience static like noise and breakup.

I got a Razor Baracuda X headset for my ps5 and they gave me an extension cord for the Type C dongle. Super smart on razors part
I bought the SteelSeries nova 7x and there they gave me an extension Cord for USB c too. Yes, very smart 👌🏼
I have a Turtle Beach Stealth 700. I've had it since 2017 for my PS4. It works perfectly without issues with PS5.
Hit this particular issue today. Even worse on PS5 Slim since it has no frontal USB-A connector... So definitely gonna need an extension cord.
Hmm, I think the best solution is get like a small short USB extension cable of quality and let it lay behind someplace away from the heat.
Personally I wouldn't like it in the front, and I like the front to be available for quick access if ever needed.
Get like a 5 to 10 inch extension cable that should also solve the issue in concept if the cable is of quality.
It is possible and it will work
However if your dongle is USB 2.0 and the USB A port on the front of the PS5 is also a USB 2.0 port it makes more sense to use that port instead of the USB 3.x ports on the back
But if you aren’t using those ports for anything it would be perfectly fine to do it that way
I’ve had mine on the back and I’ve never had any issues. But I’ve had problems plugging it in into the second from the top USB port, but the top one works good
You could also buy a short female usb adapter cord a few inches long to prevent damage and exhaust heat
Dude. It was you that recommended plugging into the back in the first place. I can remember last year when you posted the video
You can also buy a USB extension cable and tuck the dongle where heat is not a problem...
I have the Astro a30s the 2022 remodeled edition. connected to my ps5. And it’s flawless. Highly recommend. I do also keep my dongle out front. But I do worry about people hitting it. Or dropping something and it bouncing and hitting my dongle.

I have the JBL Quantum 800 headset and plugged it in at the back of the PS5 for 2 years now, so far it works like a charm
Ps5 isn't even in year 2 yet it's only been out for a year and a few months won't enter year 2 until September
Yea I have mine in the back and haven’t had any problem yet. I keep my charging cable plugged in the front so I’m cool wit it in the back!!
I've utilized a USB extension on the back of the console just for this reason because yes it doss get quite warm
Done this since day one. Pulse receiver in front, usb c charging cable (for headset and/or controller) in back along with external ssd for ps4 game storage.
The front was made for charging remotes and adding accessories the back is for external hard drives and ps5 camera. It's been known since launch
One issue I have experienced is the headphones audio cutting in and out during gameplay. I realized the issue was having my external hardrive connected next to the headphones dongle. Other than, the dongle works fine for me in the back of the console.
I have a PS5 3D Pulse headset and plug my dongle in the back. There is a catch though. I noticed very early of doing it that I would get connectivity issues with the audio cutting in and out and poor range. Instead of moving it up front I just got a USB extension cord, plugged that in the back, and then ran that cord up to a forward position within my media cabinet mounted with double sided tape. With this set up I have a safe plug for the dongle that is unobstructed and perfect connection without the eye sore that would be a connection hanging out the front of the console!!
I'm using a 6tb external hard drive in the back USB port with no problems for 2 years now. I assume that my PS5 is just well ventilated but I'll have to keep an eye out on the pulse dongle
I have some issues with my wireless headset, I will try this 😉
I had it connected on the back since I bought it, and never a problem, that was until recent updates a couple of days ago.
I first also plugged it in the back but especially with some headsets that struggle with the wireless connection like the Sennheiser Epos GSP670, the Corsair Virtuoso RGB XT and a few others they drop constantly the signal. So I switched to the front. It's gotten better but still those are having problems. Then I bought the Razer Kaira Pro and they come with a USB C dongle so it is plugged into the front anyways and they have 0 issues with dropping the signal. I can literally walk around anywhere inside my house and no issues. I even went as far as going outside and up to the sidewalk and they still didn't cut out. But yes its definitely better to plug a headset Into the front rather than into the back of the PS5.

I did experience this with both my PS5 & my son's PS5 early on in the very beginning of this generation. What I ended up doing was just ordering a USB extension cable for my son's. So that the dongles would be away from the actual exhaust vents. & I got a USB hub that has a long enough cord (to keep the dongle away from the heat) for mines since I have more devices connected to my PS5. I would suggest a simple cheap 3 or 4 port usb hub or just a usb extension cable.
That way you don't have to have anything sticking out the front of you PS5.
Nice video. A USB extension might also work.
I have a USB C to type A converter and plug the dongle into that so the USB Type A socket on the front of the PS5 is completely free. It extends out more but atleast i still have the extra port if needed and it really doesnt make much of a difference in terms of how far it sticks out. No issues with audio or connectivity either
I highly recommend getting USB extenders. Even just 3 inches for the back. I understand why people would want to keep the front of the playstation, the glossy side as clear as possible.
The way you said "if you or someone you know" reminds me of those mesothelioma lawsuit ads on TV.
