    I’ve had the Power-A charger almost since 2015. At the onset, the light bar is solid when charging, pulsates as it gets closer to 100% charge, and then turns off at full charge. at the time, I didn’t think it wasn’t that pricey at about $30 ($17 now), especially since it was one of few being offered.

Recently I got a charging station, but for the sole purpose of freeing up the port on the playstation for an extended hard drive. I've been using the Nyko one for years, like since the PS4 came out. It's amazing because it has a dongle type thing that plugs in to the controller port, and magnetically adheres to the dock, so there's no unplugging or fiddling to get it seated, you just set your controller on to it. It's also really cool because the dock is actually like a brick that you can use alone, or snap a second one on to charge 2 controllers, with the same single power cord. It's a freaking amazing invention. If I need to, I can just take out the dongle, stick it to something metal (so I don't loose it), and plug the controller into the micro usb at my couch, so I never have to worry about a dead controller, I can just keep playing with it plugged in. I'm disabled, so I've set up bunch of charging cables right by where I sit and sort of made a couch command center, with laptop, micro usb, mini usb (for the PS2), usb-c, wireless, oneplus warp, pretty much everything. I highly recommend it 😉 I've also got usb extension cables on hand. With 4 gamers in my house, I take charging very seriously 😁

  • @erikschutz7907
    @erikschutz7907 Před 2 lety +4

    If I may add another approach: magnetic USB cables
    these are cables, on which the USB-connector is magnetically connected to the cable itself.
    The cable can be removed from the connector without any hassle and the connector can be left in the charging port on your controller.
    While they are priced about 15€ (in german Amazon & EBay at least), I never had one break.

      This may be a long-shot, but check the power saving settings on your console. By default, I think the controller is set to turn itself off if it's not being used after a certain time. Perhaps check those settings. If that's not the case, and the controller's outside of its warranty period, try replacing the battery. Cheap batteries can be bought on eBay and there's many useful videos (including ones from John), that show how to replace them.

    A trick you can do to get more life out of a mini usb cable is to get some pins (sewing pins) and gently pushing them _under_ the small metal tabs on the top of the connector. Leave them in for a few hours at least and you'll notice when you remove the pins, the tabs stay up instead of sinking below into the slot.

    Big part, for me at least, in why the micro USB cables would fail is the position in which the cable sits on the surface where you have your controller, because the plug is under the light bar AND angled down slightly, if you have the DS4 on a flat surface while charging the micro USB side of the cable has pressure put on it upwards which can over time bend the metal portion of the cable and break contacts inside. It's not very good design which thankfully was corrected on the DualSense.
    Since I started propping up my DS4 on something or placing it upside down while charging I haven't had to replace the micro USB cable.

    Also, If you take requests, I would really appreciate your thoughts on potential media remotes compatible with the PS4. While there will be some gaming, another thing they will probably do is try to use streaming apps. The standard PS4 media remote seems to have gone the way of the PS4 proprietary charging dock.

    Thx John! 👍 😎

    • @crypticvyper3092
      @crypticvyper3092 Před 2 lety +2

      The EXT is an extension data/charging port. On my controller, Dual shock 4, I use it in the charging stand, but I also have a keyboard attachment that fits between the handles and plugs into the audio jack and the EXT port .. the audio passes through to an audio port on the bottom of the keyboard, and ext keyboard uses the EXT. You have to get the PS4 to recognize the keyboard as an accessory, but after that, any time you type, or send text message in or out of game, you simply type it in. Another bonus is if you don't use the keyboard, it works as an expanded battery pack and has it's own micro-USB charging port and you can charge the Dual shock battery and the keyboard at the same time. There are also battery packs that fit between the handles with audio throughout jacks and use the EXT to power the controller, tripping or quadrupling the play time of the controller, usually allowing you to charge every 2-3 days, however the best way to charge the controller itself to give the longest battery life is to use the charging dock, as most docks can cycle the battery and reset the charge memory of the battery, ensuring you get years of full battery life compared to a memory logged battery that won't charge from Micro-USB cables. A charging dock is the best way to go, and if you can find it, the official charging dock from Sony for the controller is the best you can get for the battery, but aftermarkets will do just as well.
      So despite problems with Micro-USB and USB-C cable connectors going bad because you shove it' in at an angle instead of straight in... A dock doesn't just save cable/port wear and tear, it also extends the life of the battery considerably because it cycles the battery and removes the charge memory of the battery.. (charge memory happens to rechargable batteries over time where the cell reports full when it is only 70% or 60% or 50% charged.. people think the battery is going out.. a dock will determine the actual battery charge level, and if it isn't 90-100%, the charger will drain the battery and do a conditioned trickle charge which resets the charge memory of the battery, this is automatic.. this cycling works until the actual battery is dead from the cell decay.. but on the Dualshick 4 battery, mine is a Day 1 controller with no battery replacement, and it is still gaming @9 hours a session with it being over 8 years old.. My DualSense is still gaming at Day 1 time frame, 12-14 hours with full haptics per game session. The charging docks are well worth the investment over the usb charging cable.

  • @Adriano991b
    @Adriano991b Před 2 lety +11

    I think it's an exaggeration to say that charging plugging to the console is "the worst way". Yeah, the Micro USB connector can wear over time, but the console USB port provides the exact current and voltage the controllers needs, with no risk to the battery. The worst way is to charge it through a wall adapter, even worse if it is a 20 Watt charger or higher.

    • @Adriano991b
      @Adriano991b Před 2 lety +2

      Also, a lot of charging stations come with an USB plug with no wall adapter whatsoever. You should check under the device if there's any label indicating the recommended energy input if you don't want it to be damaged after some time. Most of the stations have inputs of 5 volts 2 amps. An old phone wall charger will do the trick nicely.

    • @spork8655
      @spork8655 Před 2 lety +3

      Yeah, this is a dumb video. So you can charge with a dock... that doesn't make it superior or inferior to plugging it in. Micro USB isn't that fragile at all, unless you're a doofus who just constantly yanks on things and crams plugs in the wrong way.

    • @Rob.Hinkley
      @Rob.Hinkley Před 2 lety

      @@spork8655 Actually, John makes a valid point. Not only is charging via USB slower, particularly with micro/mini USB, the ports can become distorted and bent out of shape no matter how careful you may be when plugging in or removing a cable from it. Not an issue with PS5's dual-sense thanks to USB-C. It's also inconvenient using USB, and it stresses the battery. They only have so many charge cycles, so if you're just topping them up slowly with a cable, you're limiting the lifetime of your battery. The official Sony (and some 3rd Party) docks, actually have an AC cable to power the dock, which not only frees up your console's ports, but also charges the controller quicker, and safer, as they provide overcharging protection.

    • @brentchesson2179
      @brentchesson2179 Před 2 lety

    • @Rob.Hinkley
      @Rob.Hinkley Před 2 lety

      @@brentchesson2179 I wholeheartedly agree. It's not the cable that breaks down so much as the port on the controller itself becoming bent out of shape after years of use. While it was more of a problem on the PS3's DS3 Controllers, it still happens on the PS4 DS4's. If you're constantly plugging and disconnecting the cable, wiggling it about, it may damage the port over time. It depends on how careful you are with it.
      That being said, you're less likely to damage the DS4 by using the EXT port to charge it. And, by using an AC powered dock, not only do you free up the USB's on your console, but you can give your controllers a full quick charge without needing the console on or in rest mode. It's just better for your console and the controller (namely the port and battery).
