  • Can you get shredded on a high carbohydrate diet? Hell yes you can and in fact I want to discuss some research that suggests it may be more beneficial than a low carb high fat option.

Hey Paul, I have an off-topic question and I understand if you’re too busy to respond. So, I know the general recommendation for number of sets per weeks per muscle group usually ranges 10-20 sets. The question I have is how this pertains to the back, since the back is made up of so many different muscles. Is it 10-20 sets per week for lats, and then 10-20 sets per week for rhomboids, and then 10-20 sets per week for traps, and so on? I know there’s a lot of crossover between all the back muscles on most back exercises so my fear is I’m overdoing some areas while under working others. Anyone in the comments please feel free to answer. I know there’s a lot of examples out there about what constitutes a well rounded back workout but I’ve never heard this particular issue discussed. Thank you in advance.

LOVE the advise. Back in January 2020 I started a KETO diet. Wanted to lose 44 lbs. I started I learned about all these recepies and foods to eat. Saw many videos and worked out very hard. Saw videos and a couple of documentaries and like you say, INSULINE and CARBS are SATANIZED. I was very happy with what i ate. KETO this. KETO that. Cheese, steak, bacon. PB. KETO Brownies. I lost about 26 lbs. Then i stopped losing weight. I got stuck on 220 lbs. I was like this for 8 months, Then I went to a nutricionist. I weighted 224 lbs and on a 20% body fat percentage. She put me on carbs. Lots. Whole grain wheat, corn, and fruits. And the results where almost immediate. I've been on this diet (she twicks it every 4 weeks) for 6 weeks and I've lost 5 pounds, but like you say. My muscles are popping and looking very lean. My goal is 13% body fat. I should be able to get there in another 4 weeks. Love my diet by the way. Thanks for the advise and Ill start to follow.

This is such crucial information. I was on a really low carb, low calorie diet for about 4 months and yes, I lost weight but it was not sustainable for me and when i started adding calories, I gained weight. Now, I am eating more calories but also eating carbohydrates (good ones like oats, Ezekiel bread, white and sweet potatoes, pasta and rice) with every meal and the weight is coming off. Not only that, but I have to say, I feel so much better. So carbs are NOT bad, if you eat the correct macros.

I didn't only lose 70 percent of my weightlifting performance, but also my belly fat reduction halted. I deflated around my muscles. I started eating carbs again, and my waist started to trim down again, and I got my total performance at the gmy back. Carbs are a bodybuilder's friends during both bulk and cut.

As a guy in his 40s who has been practicing combat sports for years and thus needed to make weight categories, that current trend of carbs and insulin demonization is really tiring...carbs are good and their importance in sports performance is undeniable. I believe this trend is informed by the current time-restricted fasting trends and people reading studies about obese or metabolically-compromised (diabetes etc.) subjects and wrongly drawing conclusions to a healthier, or even fit, population...there's also misunderstanding about why some athletes (strength, endurance or physique) may want to deplete their carbs temporarily for various reasons, none of them being that carb or insulin are bad. Thanks Paul and ProPhysique for countering this irritating trend with great information and proven results!

You raise a great point my friend...but Diabetics have every right to demonize carbs and insulin because it's the only (natural) way to fight off or at least live better with that disease. It's simple genetics (mostly inherited from their parents) and some are blessed (like you, i assume) while some have a heavier burden to carry to live well. Different diets for different people, I guess.

      @Loliipopis Před 2 lety +1

@@HufflepuffDaddy diabetes is caused by too much fat in the diet - intramyocellular lipid accumulations - which blocks insulin from working properly --> insulin resistance --> diabetes. Yes, lots of carbohydrates are a problem when you have a lot of fat in your diet, but your body needs carbs, so cut out the fat, then become insulin sensitive. When you are metabolically recovered and insulin sensitive, your insulin response can easily deal with the blood sugar spikes.

Just like with most fads, both will probably fade away in time but all these doctors and gurus on CZcams spouting off about the wonders of low or zero carb diets are not only irresponsible in my opinion but over the long term, detrimental to one's health. "Good fats" are really easy to over eat in my opinion, i.e. nuts, avocado, etc. 1g of protein per pound only accounts for about a third of what I'm guessing my maintenance needs are, carbs seem like the best choice and fuel to make up the difference.

Durianrider eats mostly carbohydrate (80-90% of calories) including sugar and he's shredded (he says best to be under 10 grams of fat a day if possible). Also he doesn't eat less than his hunger wants him to eat. Though he does tend to equate muscle mass with the amount of testosterone steroids used (which is true but I wonder about just using weights), and he does eat more protein when he wants to gain size (muscle).
I find it harder to eat less than my hunger wants me to eat also, therefore I think reducing the fat to bare minimum is the best way in this case, because even if I have a doughnut at work, I will retain the Mr Blobby. Whatever you're doing is obviously working better than whatever I'm doing. Though the gram pound protein does seem excessive during the cut (would seem better on a bulk depending on the steroid assistance level).

I understand the controlled science diet. What about individual various hormonal responses. We all process differently. That’s the x- factor. I tried all diets at all extremes, as well as balanced macros. I’m fuller looking, and hormonally stable with carbs every meal. I actually eat animal protein only at dinner. I eat a potato for breakfast, oatmeal, fruit, veggies, rice, throughout the day. Simple single ingredient carbs. Now my body has time to process food vs meat staying in your gut day in
and day out. More fiber and less strain on your colon. Less hormones from meat also. Less estrogen in my body. I really feel it’s working for me. And the responses i get is outstanding. Please try it out. It’s not the normal 1 gram per pound of body weight philosophy I’ve been doing forever. It’s the keep the hormones happy, gut bacteria happy, glycogen muscle feeding, starch/bacteria feeding, mind feeding, water/muscle filling, stomach digesting resting...diet....Paul what is your take on this? Thx forgot to mention my physique... 215 5’11 muscles popping, abs showing, no supplement taking, and never taken enhancement drugs. And still have a few drinks at night. Also workout 5 days a week. I do split upper and lower, with good muscle connection on each set, with breakdown from drop sets. All fed with whole food shakes or fruit/veggie
Combo. Also been working out since I was in
my teens and now I’m 44 still killing it. But always ate clean, drank my up to galllon of water per day, and past few months started the eat more carbs and less meat diet. And is the best thing I’ve done so far. The worst was the keto. FYI. Thx.

This made me notice that nature surprisingly doesn't have much of high carb high fat food. So by default nature also only prefers either one of carbs or fat as energy storage and protein for organisms development.

You make a lot of good points. Yes, it is true that insulin is essential to muscle anabolism, and I give much respect and appreciation to your point about the quality of carbohydrates. There is a lot of good truth in this video. But I'm sure you'll agree that there is not a "one size fits all" dietary approach to getting shredded, considering the large percentage of the population who have developed hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance from decades of poor dietary choices. How much carbohydrate a person can consume and still be able to burn fat depends on a person's insulin sensitivity. If your fasting insulin levels are below 6 microunits per milliliter of blood, then you can get shredded with the high carb approach, and your body likey will respond very well. But if you have fasting insulin levels of 18 microunits or more, you are very insulin resistant and won't be able to burn the fat as easily. An even better measurement is the Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) score. If your score is over 1.5, you are insulin resistant. If it's above 3 you are on the borderline of type 2 diabetes. So, bottom line, your level of insulin sensitivity vs. insulin resistance is relevant as to whether you can burn fat on a high carb diet by simply employing the caloric deficit "move more and eat less" model.

It's so funny that I've just recently discovered this phenomenon on myself, while I was testing a very high protein diet. Because I ate lower amount of carbs, I slowed down, and even though I wasn't in a caloric deficit, my NEAT decreased, and I couldn't consume the same amount of calories as before the diet, without gaining weight! Very intresting.

Same thing that the silver era said, Mike Mentzer too. 60% carbs, 20% protein 20% fat. Only time when protein should be high is when all you eat is only protein and fat, but even then it’s only for 72 hours that you should eat like that. Vince Jeronda- not sure of the spelling, said that the low carb method is only for a few weeks at most not for ever. Golden era also ate carbs, but only on the weekends.

      Can you summarize?

    • @vitacell1
      @vitacell1 Před rokem

      @@PaulRevelia Markus Reinhardt
"My Diet mainly consists of Carbohydrates these days, making them almost 60% of
      my overall caloric intake.
I used to experiement with low carb dieting but felt that it left me feeling
sluggish and looking flat (I did loose fat, but also too much muscle).
Mike used to tell me, "you can eat a pound of pure sugar everyday, as long as you
keep your calories below maintainance, you WILL loose fat!" - I did not try that -grin
However, Mike was right (as always). The last show that I did (MM2002) involved a diet
that mainly consisted of carbs (white rice, potatos, oats, fruit and some Veggies), the
protein content (chicken, GEN'S HumanPro, Eggwhites) was rather low in compare
to my "old-time" diets (250-300gr Protein!) - my protein intake roughly made it to
120gr-150gr!!! (no muscle tissue was lost at all!)
Of course, being a HIT trainer (Training brief and Intense) is part of the reason
too. Any other program (Volume, high sets) would've probably destroyed my lean
muscle tissue and left me with less size and therefore less active tissue to
burn fat in order to achieve the ultra-ripped condition that I ended up being in.
So after years (15!) of changing from what I originally believed was right (60/30/10)
to eating only fat and proteins over to eating low carbs and whatever else
the Fitness industry came up within that period of time, I ended up going
back to the "old school" approach - EATING BALANCED!
C,mon guys - THINK! - Muscles need carbohydrates to operate.
Mike always used to say, " Fat burns in the flame of Carbohydrates." - He was
saying that by eating them (carbs) someone would actually get a metabolic advantage.
Sort of like throwing dry wood into a fire, the flames will rise - He refered
to proteins like using wet wood instead, the flame would have a difficult time."

Your muscles will look fuller with carbs because your muscles are mostly filled with water/fluid
For every gran of cargs to eat, you retain 3 grams of water/fluid.
Your muscles will gain this fluid and glycogen, making them fuller, but you may have to do other things to compensate for the extra water/fluid you retain. Harder to be shredded on high carbs.

This is amazing. So I started at 85kgs a few months back and im down to 74 kg. got to this point by doing carbs but recently I switched to 2 days high fat(80-90g a day up from 45g) and high protein with low carbs(mostly from veggies) and 1 day of normal carb day(200g protein/170g carbs/45 fat ~1850-1900cal). Would you recommend that approach or should I just go back to carbs every day or maybe make the carb day a refeed? I have to say when I get to the carbs day I feel extra hungry probably because of the insulin spike from the carbs but its manageable. My goal is to lose ~2 more kgs. Thank you for the great videos!
