Trent Alexander-Arnold has been enjoying a great run of form in a new position as an inverted full-back. The Liverpool defender is now being deployed in a midfield position, which has seen him make a far bigger impact for Liverpool in recent games.
Questions have long been asked of Jurgen Klopp and his unwillingness to move him to a more advanced position, so why has he changed tact - and just how are they utilising him outside of his usual left-back role?
    JJ Bull explains.

To be fair, we do have a deep lying playmaker in Thiago, Trent is Thiago who can do more, have more type of passes in him, but not as smooth, not as quick like one touch pass. Trent can develop into that kind of midfielder, I mean Kimmich also changed from RB into one of the best DLP because of Pep, took him so long to finally become permanent midfielder because Javi Martinez and Thiago left and now have Pavard as defensive RB, no more creative RB like Kimmich. He can definitely work in midfield, he was a midfielder at academy days, Klopp just seen his strength and think how to maximize it differently.

At 24 he has won EVERY trophy available (minus World Cup, where he doesn't typically start anyway) and will be the highest assisting defender of all time in the Premier League within 2 years alongside Robertson. HE IS 24 and is so good that when he has 2 assists, amazing passes, and a glorious game, it's nitpicked when he is dribbled passed a single time even when it doesn't turn into anything. THAT is class. Nobody has mentioned how he megged Zinchenko for the assist to tie the game against Arsenal because he's just that much better than Zinchenko and Zinchenko isn't under the same pressure to be flawless as Trent.

Nobody ever talks about TAA when he has a good defensive game. Ive seen many games where before the game, everybody will talk about how Trent is gonna struggle against the winger who's gonna give him "hell", but then TAA has a good game and shows how sound he can be 1v1 (defensively). TAA isn't a bad defender! Neither is he a great one, but his biggest fault in defence has been based on his attitude (like not bothering to jump in an arial duel). Also, why would you want to take someone who "cAnT dEfEnD" and put him in the (LFC) no.6 where (in the past) usually players like Fabinho, Henderson, Milner and even Thiago have had to be very defensively minded and reliable in the past?

Great analysis. People really don't understand that a being a Center mid is mostly psychological. It requires tremendous acumen, intelligence and cunning (Hence the importance of Fabhino, Casemiro and Rodri. They are all very cunning and have mastered the art of cheating). Not everyone is Bernando Silva who has the lungs of a marathoner & is comfortable in any province of the pitch. Trent issue is he doesn't have the fitness of a midfielder and the psychological endurance to function as one. Defirent mentality required there. It's not all that simple. What seperated Beckham from Trent was his fitness. I love Trent but he seems to fatigue quite easy, especially if the press doesn't work. This is why he's also not a WingBack. Very similar to Marcelo at Madrid or Verlvade, who has had to develop the interiority of his game and eschewed from playing in the wings as of late. I actually think it's probably easier to be a center-mid who is occassionally used as a rightback, ala Milner or Kimmich. The opposite is not true. Anyways, great analysis.

keeping him at right back also means you don't have to get a new right back. the market for one doesn't seem very good at the moment. starting at midfield would also mean he might get marked out of the game, while arriving into midfield or going up the wing allows some unpredictability. ond if a team were to mark him, it would free up other midfielders and players.
while he played very well against arsenal, i am not sure how well trent is on the turn for him to keep it up against high pressing, high level teams. but against teams that play deep blocks and would allow him time on the ball, this would be effective. if this season has any lessons for liverpool, one of the important ones is that the team will turn up for big games, but it's the matches against relegation threatened teams that throw curveballs.
i am happy with this development. he accumulated the most touches he's ever had in the leeds match. and fewer things, to me, are more enjoyable than watching trent pass the ball.

Trent's strength comes from his ability to send inch-perfect deep crosses from the right-back position. He just needs some tactical adjustments to meet that requirement. From that perspective, I can totally understand why someone like Trippier starts over Trent for England - he's not as good a crosser, but he's such a top-class all-round player that you don't need to build the team around him to the same extent.

I just don’t agree that if he’s in the midfield he won’t be good bc he won’t have space and time. I have seen TAA many times make quick decisions. I've been thinking TTA should play more central for the past couple of years, also said the same about Wan-Bisaka. He could easily play as a central defender or midfield destroyer, because if he's on form no one gets past him. It might be a bit of a stretch, but at least for England they could be our answer to Pirlo, Gattuso plus a box to box type player just ahead of them could be interesting.

@@kyledittman8408 i also have 1 winger, 1 mezzala on the same side of the field and 1 advance forward.(4-3-3)
This is how the play i mentioned works. The winger stays wide to pin down FB. The mezzala will then move diagonally inside to channels and this movement will naturally drag the opponent's DM inside and draw the attention of 1 CD on that side inside. Right at that moment, the AF/poacher will take advantage of the space created between the DM, CD and that pinned FB (the halfspace is wide open). The IWB which is now standing in the exact location on our side of the field will have a clear view and passing lane straight towards that space created earlier for the AF to move into and the forward will be place in a very dangerous position right away. He can choose to face the GK for a narrow shot or a cut back pass to the mezzala to tap in.
The wider the attacking width is set, the more effective this play will be. Set the tempo to be really high cuz i want the IWB pass to be swift and decisive. Passing directness to be shorter tho cuz i dont want constant long balls. Attacking mentality.
Mid Block to draw opponent's def line up a little bit, press a little harder, not to hard tho and a standard def line of your own to prevent counters.
This tactic works well even in lower leagues cuz of its width. Stretches out back 3s like a charm. (Set the approach play to be UNDERLAP too for that side of the field - required)

Homestly it's shocking how little klopp is getting out of TAA especially at these times where positions are just on paper and it's all about roles. It doesn't matter whether he plays at RB or CM what matters is that he should have much less defensive Responsibility and much more freedom where players are creating space to give him time to play his games. And he obviously must improve his tight-spaces game

    • @pseudonym9215

Yes, i think what Klopp and boys haven't completely figured this season is low to push TAA forward and get him on the ball more without opening up the defense. TAA is clearly the number 1 playmaker in the team, and i think klopp has been trying to get him into more impact positions. There still needs fine adjustment but i think for it work we need someone like Fab always on the pitch. You could see it in Nottingham match, as soon as we got fab off and thiago in, the pressure on the defensive line was much greater. We need a Fab rotation player, this should be priority.

But having Trent as inverter midfielder means the left back Robertson have to join a three-men defense which hinder him offensively as Trent have the freedom to operate from the midfield or from the flank another player is hindered and it's not shown yet is Salah who is now play a lone right winger and behind him is Henderson a RM who also have to cover on the right but doesn't have to capabilities to provide assistance to Salah who is also in that formation will have to swap roles in hendo to become the RM in one twos situation while hendo is more further up yet that's not his forte in this case you are not sacrificing any normal player but the player who is the main threat, the top scorer and the who that nay tactic should be build around not to find solutions for Trent you hinder others Robbo was the main assist provider on the as an LB now since he has to join Konate and VVD his way far from creating danger and his assists number is dropped for those reasons I don't think Klopp will make this formation his flagship tactic but he will run it for the remaining games if it works and gives him results untill he gets new creative midfielders next season then we will either see Trent goes back to his RB position or he has to compete with someone else in midfield

So basically TAA has the skillset of a classic winger, but they already have Salah, so Klopp has to stick TAA somewhere else and hope the opponents don't exploit his weaknesses. If Liverpool can set up to create some time and space for TAA to operate as a 6, it could work over the long term. But there's still the defensive frailties to exploit when they don't have the ball, no matter where he plays because he just doesn't have good defensive awareness.
