Tried mine out. Had two good sales which I wouldn’t have had without this machine. It is wonderful. Easy to use with the app and worked brilliantly. There was no need for all that panic! Cant wait to use it again.

You're welcome. Great fun doing it (even though it was a few years back) but the device remains the same and still works perfectly. They always put out updates to the software and there have been a few tweaks to the website but essentially it is still all the same. Hope you find it as useful as I do!

Markets in the high street are small businesses and some are actually enormous..they all take cash predominantly. CASH IS KING!
I do not disagree with you. This is also about adapting to the current state of generations not liking carrying cash.

There are a huge number of people who don't even carry cash anymore. Even if cash is still king, it's suicide for a small business to not have a card reader and deny themselves customers who don't carry cash. Especially after covid hugely reduced the number of people who carry cash.

Great little device but I could do with one that supports "card not present" transactions. Do you know if the "solo" or "3g with printer" supports that?
Hi Matt. Sorry this is not something I am aware of. Card not present is not something I do with my business, I take payment through my website, or send my customers a link from SumUp, so I have not looked into this any further.
Just bought one, easy to set up.

Hi John - thanks and yes. I think you mean - in person, with someone with their card? If they are one off's just use the manual entry button on the phone screen (bottom right corner) and punch in the right amount, check the tax rate and then add to cart. Easiest way..

Cash is still quite common in the arts and antiques trades. I use it all the time under $£100
Cash is good, but I find that no one ever carries it. So to stop the loss of a sale, this is why I have got a card reader. It helps prevent people walking away without paying for something.

It should do, certainly in the UK it accepts all the major ones. Not sure what other cards that are out there around the world it would not work with? Hope you have fun using it.

Yes - I pass my phone to the customer and they enter their email address and the receipt gets sent. No paper - but I am sure you can buy a printer to go with the POS.

I’ve just started a small business and was looking for info about a card reader and you just helped me decide which one to get and I’ll also use your referral link. Now I do have a question, when I’ve open my business I wasn’t aware that I don’t have to necessarily register so I did that and because I’m a registered business for the tax do I have to select 5/20% or can select 0% as my current sale are quite low? Good for you! Love to hear about new start ups. Firstly I am not an accountant or business advisor - however I was always taught that being VAT registered is a good thing, it brings kudos to your business and makes sure you are above board.
This is what I know about tax - The VAT threshold currently stands at £85,000 for 2021/22 tax year in the United Kingdom. You must register with HMRC if your VATable turnover trips the threshold for Value Added Tax (from www.theukrules.co.uk/rules/employment/taxation/vat/registration-threshold.html#:~:text=The%20VAT%20threshold%20currently%20stands,a%20rolling%2012%2Dmonth%20period.)

Great review - how easy is it to select different bank accounts for the payments to go to? Can it go to a crowdfunder page?
Honestly I have never done this, but changing the bank account is easy in your online account settings. There are some checks you need to go through but this is painless.
Should you set a VAT percentage or what’s that about ? Is it better to put 0% vat for customers receipts or 20% ??
If you are VAT registered then add it to the costs, but if not keep it at zero. Hope that helps.

As this is handling money - I would suggest SumUp treat all new members just as a bank would. They should have sorted the ID by now - if not send them a message from the app and I am sure they will sort it.

Thanks for your informative guide. I just purchased one but want to know as I’m just starting out and plan to attend a Xmas fair but not registered as a business yet (hoping to do so in the future) as I’m no where near the required threshold - more of a testing platform for me at the moment. If I link a personal bank account will the buyer see my personal name on their transactions or is what you indicated with the “caveman reviews” is where you set up a “business name” and that is what would show up as transaction? Also, if I decide to switch to their business account and request for a card, will this be possible in the future?
Yes to all, but no to personal details. The best thing I did was to set it up, and then made myself as my first customer (for £1) and I then saw what my customers saw, and it recycled back into my account. Only my business name, which I changed to make it look better, so it was worth a few pennies for that transaction.

Hi it is set up, that once money is Cleared from the payees bank (for me it is average of 2 working days) it is paid straight into my own bank account without me having to do anything. All very simple.

Hi yes of course - and if you do not have a website, use the SUMU up shop and pass it to customers and get them to buy from that - for example this is mine from my 'store I hold on sumup' - caveman-store.sumup.link/ you can do whatever you want - it really is an awesome piece of software.

I'm trying to set mine up but it's all in US dollars. I have no idea how to change it to UK. It's telling me to fill out my details but it's asking what US state I live in and zip code so I can't proceed

As a busker how do I set a repeat pay so that people can leave a tip through my playing?
Although I have never used it - and you may need to check, I believe this can be done by using the Repeat Payment feature. Apparently you set up an invoice online (for whatever amount you think it should be) from SumUp help page;
Log in to your SumUp profile using a web browser and select "Invoices" in the left hand menu.
Choose "Invoices" and then "Recurring".
Click the blue "New Recurring Invoice" button.
Customise the schedule, specifying the start date, frequency and end date of your recurring invoice.

can I have 2 accounts on this as myself and my daughter do seperate things and sometimes at the same place? is it dependant on which phone connects to it?
Hi - I am not sure. You might be able to create 2 accounts and use the card reader itself on multiple phones, with different accounts? The unit is a 'dumb' unit and relies on the data/phone it is connected to to make it work. Be good to know if you managed to do it.
Can you manually input the credit card number into the card reader if the card is not working for some reason??
No this is a card reader. People no longer take credit card numbers due to fraud, but you can direct people to your online SUMUP shop and get them to do it.
often get bluetooth cutting out which is embarassing but do you need internet connection or can i use for car boot sales
Hi, I had the same issue with my blue tooth, but I have since upgraded my phone and not had any issues since. The card reader needs to have internet connection at all times when using it, as it has to check funds are available before authorising payment. So if you are in the middle of nowhere with no signal, it will not work.

At 2:50 it seemed to be a little bit slow sending the amount due from your phone to the card reader. It looks like you even cut out a portion of the waiting time. Hi, payment is as quick as your data connection. The video was edited but not to speed up any process (more of cutting out the boring waffle?!) I love sumup it has helped my business to no end. Hope you make the right decision.

A sumup rep contacted me to answer dome of my questions and he seemed to know less than me. I ended up ordering a card reader from zettle which is through PayPal. This one is perfect for my needs and I use the invoicing app all the time (but is not included in this review). Hope you make the right call.

Yes, as an item in your 'shop' or as an entry of an amount in the app, you can charge the fee of your service and the payment will be taken. Hope this answers your question?

You say its connected to the bluetooth on the phone, Do you also have to have the wifi data switch on too. My Phone Contract isn't unlimited Data whilst out and about.
Hi Sharon, the actual SumUp unit is a 'dumb' terminal and has to be connected to a 'smart' device (such as a phone or tablet) via bluetooth. The actual working and the taking of cash is ran live time on the smart device, to do this it has to be connected to the internet (whether W-Fi at an event space, or by the devices data). For me I have a 4Gb monthly usage on my phone and I have never gone over that whilst using this device. I hope that helps?

Hi - Not sure what card you had with the unit, do you mean? In the UK you can add any genuine bank account. Hope you managed to sort this.

Hi good question. The phone needs an app to run so needs to be connected to the internet (WiFi or data). The card reader connects to the phone (or tablet) and is just a slave to read the card but it is the phone that processes the payment.

Can you set up a specific donation amount on the Sumup Solo device?
I would suggest to use the app and set up a recurring amount. Then you can select the same item over and over again, hope that helps.

Could I set up the Sum up reader to pay the sales money into a Revolut business account?
I am sure you can - but as I do not have a Revolut business account (I only have a personal one) I would not like to be 100% certain. All you need are the account details, for the money to be paid into, so if you have those on the Business Rev account then I am sure it will work fine.

It is a business tool, but anyone can use them (not that I'd think of a reason for personal use?)

I have never done this, but I am sure you could add an item in your shop as 'tip' and add it to the point of sale.

As part of the setup you get to name the business. This name will show up on your customers bank transaction, usually it will read something like "SumUp-CavemanReviews". It is really easy to do and if you follow the on screen walk through when you register this is all taken care for you. And thanks for the feedback, hope you subscribed to the channel.

Very easy, register your bank account details in the app And you can set up when you want the money transferred (24hours later..?) And the app does it automatically. Once set up nothing more is needed.

Well caveman. Great presentation. If you covered it in the video then I didn't understand it. So lwhat I want to know is, while as you say people are paying by cash they are also buying a lot more on line. Since they cant tap their because they are in a different country. What do you do then. Does sumup have a facility for this?

Hey Janet, thanks for the great feedback. What I do at events is accept both cash and card. All sales are recorded on my SUMUP machine (cash as well as it puts into a sales spreadsheet - which you do not pay any fess for). You can send payment to an email address or mobile number and ask the buyer to enter their own details but you can't take payment over the phone (this function is something I would not use anyhow).

Can it be used by charities for donations? Problem for us is that people decide the amount of their donations themselves.

Absolutely. I bought my device about 14 months ago, due to covid I could not work and use it and was not charged a penny. Hope you find that it does the same for your business as it did for mine.

1- does only approved transactions go through? for example, lets say a customer pays with a card (and the card has insufficient funds tho they do not know), will it get declined right there and then? if not, how does the issue get resolved or how does that work? i just want to ensure i know i am getting paid for my goods and services.
2- does sumup send out yearly income tax forms (in the USA it's called 1099k) for businesses to file their tax returns?

@@strangerdaysss Thanks for asking more questions and it is easy to understand why it is difficult as every penny counts when we run our business. As I am based in the UK, I can only say what happens for me.
1. the payment, when taken by the card reader is instantly checked through the app (hence why you need Wi-Fi or 3G network connected). You will know within seconds if the card is declined and therefore no sale and you will not get charged.
For question 2. In the UK we probably do our tax slightly differently, however I found that it links to my online accounting software and if it didn't, I can download all the sales in an excel report and copy it across into other software package. So far (for the last 2 years, this little device has been faultless).
Hope you make the right choice.
Good item. For a charity having O% tax is great and it sends regular reports to the treasurer and pays automatically to PayPal or bank account.

That's great. I did the exact same thing, just to test things. The amount you charged yourself will have the 1.69% handling fee applied and whatever is left will sit in the SumUp account. If you have set it up correctly, they hold it for a few days (to make sure there is no claw back) and the amount will automatically be paid into your nominated bank account.
Hi. Its 2 year on from this, im wondering if you still like sumup? Any problems you've encountered? Im looking to get something to help my business but all the fine print can be mind boggling and looking at reviews online i see a lot of people complaining this year.

Hi, for me it still works exactly as I need it too. Sporadic use, get it out, tap and pay and the money is in my bank. I personally have never had a problem with it and I am still very happy with it. To note the online dashboard has changed a little since this video, but nothing worth mentioning. If anyone asks, I still highly recommend it. I hope this helps and good luck, it is an amazing step to take, being able to take card payments in today's cashless society.

Hi Lucy, you can have one for ages and use it sporadically. The account is in your name and sumup will only take a payment if you use the card reader (or send an invoice from your sumup account). I know loads of photographers that use them and they seem very happy with it.
Best bet is to buy one and give it a go. You'll never know how busy you get or diversify your photography offers?? At least then you can charge people. 😃
How long does it take to put your transaction money on your bank account ?
For me it is 2 business working days, so long as I know this I factor in all my budgets.

I think you mean the 1.69% transaction fee? That comes out of the payment taken (so if you charge £10, the fee will be taken and the remaining paid to your nominated bank account - £9.83). Does that answer the question?

Hey Mike, simply download the app to you phone, connect the machine via bluetooth and providing your phone has data connection payment can be taken. I hope the walk through on the video helps.

Thanks for the question. It probably depends on your usage. For me I charge mine about once every few months. That is weekend usage. So a fully charged unit should last a busy user an entire day with no problem. I guess the easiest way to prevent this is to have a charger bank (same as an android phone port) just in case?

is it traceable to the address its sent to before its set up?
Hey Jude. Not quite sure why or what you are asking.. This is a genuine business tool, you will need to have a genuine business address (even if it is your home address) as it has to be traceable and your customers have to have some info about your company. But just like any good card reader company, you can change it if you move or have a change in circumstances. Hope that answers your question?

Hi, if my phone battery died could I still take payments?
Not on the SumUp device, but you can direct people to your SumUp (online) shop and they make a payment direct to your shop - rather than you take the cash. This is handled by the system and your customer, without you needing to use a dead phone? Only a suggestion?
