I'm not Puerto Rican but I grew up in a neighborhood called Sunset Park in Brooklyn, NYC where Boriquas rule the roost. All of Ida's dishes that I've made so far have been beyond tasty. Definitely transports me back to dinner at many an Abuela's household. Her sofrito recipe is my go-to when I want to be reminded of the bold, authentic flavors inherent to Caribbean Latin dishes. Thanks Ida!

I did end up using a total of 2 cups water (spoon trick worked!). I also made your from-scratch sofrito recipe prior to making the rice. The clerk at the grocery store told me that aji dulce is currently banned from import into the US, so I bought a bag of Sweeties (tiny sweet bell peppers) and he said that would work. The aroma is fantastic. :) Thanks again, I'm definitely going to try more of your recipes this weekend.

Arroz con gandules is a big hit cuz its da bomb. When I met my hubby and he invited me over to dinner his mom made this and I was like wow, this is bomb. I like your recipe. I'm going to follow this way. It's alot less complicated than what's on the Goya can. When I asked my in-law how it's made that's what she referred me to even though I know she don't make it like that. I'm just gonna have to look for your recipes for now on. I made small batch of sofrito also came out wonderful. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I can eat a whole pot of this stuff.

Holy crap. I can NEVER make decent arroz con gandules (I'm dominican but I've never learned) and this was seriously amazing. I added goya tomato sauce, alittle more salt and made a sofrito similar to yours. It was awesome. Seriously thank you for this!

OMG, thank you SO MUCH! I love, love, love your videos! They are so helpful to this PR I still learning how to cook PR food! My arroz con gandules always comes out watery, bland or both, and I always use the Goya recipe from the can. I'm going to try your recipe for sofrito because mine comes out differently every time. When I ask my mom for help, she just says, "Taste it. What does it need?" 🙄 So helpful lol My grandmother lives in NYC though, and my parents didn't teach me Spanish, so it's very difficult to communicate with her now that she's 90.

Hola Senora Ida, I just want to let you that your recipe was a success. The rice was exactly as you described, so easy to make and bursting with flavor. I viewed many vids and they all seemed like the one. But there was one difference. The “ Spoon Trick” , I’ve seen and heard my Moms describe it more than once. I knew then your recipe was the one. My family thoroughly enjoyed it and I intend to learn more. Thank you again , Dios de Bendiga!!!!

This is my fave recipe for Arroz Con Gandules so far. Instead of the packaged ham seasoning I like to use bacon.
