      GO LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL DEMO IT HAD 2 HOOKS AND THEY CUT ONE OF THEM THE “I DON’T WANT TO LOSE YOU” SECTION!
      The song was written in 1978 and the John demo has a chord change and section that sounds like something Lewis Capaldi might do SUPER AHEAD OF ITS TIME!
      It was a much darker section but it was so emotionally powerful and added to that somber feeling the song had!
      They missed the mark completely. This song was a somber masterpiece 40 years ahead of it’s time. All they had to do was make it sound like a modern piano ballad with some floor to drive it. Instead they turned it into a tik tok pop song for the Beatles and cut out the best part of the song!

    I really love this song - the story behind it and its long journey to becoming a finished work is so unique and fascinating. The Beatles and John in particular were constantly experimenting with cutting edge technologies and effects, so I do think John would have been thrilled by the whole thing.
    The song itself is quite touching, bittersweet and slightly melancholic which fits perfectly as “the last Beatles song,” I think. They didn’t overdo it with the orchestral touches either. Obviously it’s never going to stack up against their catalog but it’s a nice, pleasant coda to a legendary run. And I like that they seemed to make it sound more like the music John was doing around the time he recorded the original demo, rather than trying for another Strawberry Fields Forever or something.

    • @ewest14
      @ewest14 Před 9 měsíci +55

      You should say Paul in particular as well. It was Paul who found out how to manipulate the tape machine by removing the eraser head to make tape loops. He then showed the rest how to do it and spearheaded the idea on Tomorrow Never Knows. Paul was constantly pushing them to experiment

      Not a massive Beatles listener but I also really enjoyed this song. They were experimental and innovative with how they turned the demo into a finished song, which I definitely prefer over if they tried being more "safe" with their interpretation like what Fantano described wanting the song to be like in the video.

    I really liked it, I think the large sound Paul and Ringo were going for was kind of a nice send off. I can only imagine that the reason they chose to bury the voice a little was because when put through the AI, the demo vocal track, recorded in an apartment sounds slightly awkward when put in front of studio recorded instruments. So the final product to me actually sounds quite impressive and as a Beatles fan I’m really satisfied with how it turned out.

    In a vacuum, I don't disagree with Melon, but since it's a standalone single being billed as the last Beatles track, I don't think they could realistically go with the type of subtle, understated production that he's suggesting. If they had actually released this track on the Anthology, then that would make way more sense because it would be part of a three song collection. But on it's own, they had to add enough instrumentation and production that would at least somewhat live up to the hype.

      @SeanSMST Před 9 měsíci +37

      @xBINARYGODx Lad the beatles recorded 13 albums in 7 years. It's more accurate to say this IS Beatles like cause in the Beatlemania days they had to flood albums onto the market as fast as possible, ending up a number of their albums filled with covers. PPS, WtB, BFS, all had covers filling those up. So it is like the Beatles to compromise artistry for business and non artistic reasons

    I’m not sure if this is super common knowledge, but this song was included on a cassette tape of demos John made that was labeled “for Paul”. Yoko gave Paul the cassette (in 1994) and felt John wanted to work on them with Paul.
    Therefore, I feel Paul’s contributions are welcome, and it’s a nice gesture that two 80ish-year old guys would put in the time and effort to honour a fallen bandmate (two technically) who were not able to see through the completion of the track.

    I understand the viewpoint but i still like it and disagree. This tape was made by john and is in the styling of a john song, not a beatles song. They then also had to get what little of george they had for one day of trying to make this in the 90s and then mix it all together. The fact that it even sounds as good as it does is an achievement in itself. Paul and ringo have also both had their own solo careers and their own sounds, so for them to manage to turn this into a beatles esque song while not sounding dated is just so impressive to me.
    I know paul proved he could make a lennon song with let me roll it but to turn lennons tape into something that feels like a bookend a sound that they havent really made for 60 odd years, its just cool

    What I find so strange is that The Beatles technically had the best finale with Real Love (which some feel shouldnt count as a Beatles song as the demo had been released years earlier on bootlegs and compilations, but by that logic Now and Then doesn't count either). The backing vocals, Ringo's booming tom fills, the little guitar licks, simple piano, a catchy pop melody with a surprising, slightly moody chorus, even a little harpsichord. it's also fitting that it feels like a song that could play over the credits of a beatles doc lol

    The bass and drums really aren't that obnoxious, lmao. They're pretty comfortable in the mix IMO.. because it's a song that's driving forward. I get why the original demo gives more slow and downbeat vibes that could have been stuck to here.
    But I think following that structure would have been a big mistake. They clearly wanted this version to be more uplifting, rather than walk away with a downer.
    Perhaps you can intellectualise it and say the downer would be a better song. And maybe it would be. But I also think that's massively missing the point in this case.

    I think what Anthony fails to appreciate is the fact that us zoomers didn't grow up with Anthology, and it was our parents who had the privilege to be able to go out and buy the then-newest Beatles singles "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". For the first 20 years of my life, I legitimately thought they'd never finish "Now And Then" and that there would never be a new Beatles single for our generation. It was a bit of a nihilistic thought, considering I'm a huge Beatles fan, but it was realistic for the 20 years that it lasted. When Paul announced this in June, I jumped in the air with joy. Finally, a Beatles single that's brand new for my generation! That's the aspect of the song that historically makes a lot of sense, and I'm so sad that nobody has ever touched on this aspect before. Also, when the news that this track utilized AI stem separation technology initially came out in June, Anthony made this dumb little video on his CZcams Shorts channel where he proclaimed it to be 'the worst idea ever'. I wish he could admit he was wrong about that instead of sidestepping that viewpoint in this video. Sure, it was a CZcams Shorts video from 4 months ago, it's disposable, nobody's seen it since. But I went back to it. It wasn't funny.
    I highly doubt Anthony will ever read this, because he has better things to do than sit around and even touch my comment. I just wanted to say this anyways, because it's worth knowing all the things that he neglected to mention in this video regarding his views on the track. (By the way, the track is gorgeous in my view.)

How accurate that is we'll never know, but Paul said that in the short film they released for the song. I can understand if Paul and Ringo wanted a big stamp from George to be there on the song, that they'd go ahead with what he envisioned the guitar to be in 1996.

    My only real complaint with it is that Paul didn’t really attempt to fill it out lyrically like he & George did with “Free as a Bird.” Part of what made Beatles songs great was the interplay between Lennon&McCartney’s very different approaches to lyricism in the same songs. I can’t help but feel he could’ve added something to distract from/ even replace the godawful rhyme of “because of you” with “because of you” which was probably only meant to be a fill-in line to fit the syllables for something else later, and as it stands it’s the most obvious giveaway that the Lennon vocals weren’t finished.

    I’ve been saying the song sounds unfinished to me and I couldn’t put my finger on why. I think you might have perfectly captured why I felt that way. They took John’s sweet, melancholy little demo and tried to make the song something that didn’t fit it. So you have John’s voice and demo doing one thing and everything else in the background doing something else. And I don’t know if it works. That background music would be so pretty with a different song, that solo is nice, the strings are nice. But it doesn’t work.

      well said. As much as i want it it work, it doesnt. Its a basic premise for a late 1970s song, that doesnt go anywhere. It needed a new lyrical angle, to augment the basic lyrical idea. Plus, they have hijacked Johns idea, snd taken it in a different direction. The original was most likely aimed at Yoko. The other problem, and the same issue existed with Free as a Bird, the track is over produced.

      It is because THEY CUT OUT THE BEST PART OF THE NOW AND THEN DEMO! I’m so angry fantano didn’t mention it. Paul and George, Jeff Lynn and Ringo going along CUT OUT THE BEST PART OF NOW AND THEN IN 1995.
      IM DEVASTATED AT THE MISSED OPPORTUNITY. This honestly could have been one of Johns BEST songs EVER!
      Pls Pls go listen to the original demo and hear how amazing the “I don’t wanna lose you” part is!

    Im no beatles fanatic or anything but i have to say the song is surprisingly good and i disagree specifically with the comment about paul creating an insteumental thats such a mismatch from the vocals- bc theyre the kind of vocals ive heard dozens of times before and i know exactly what kind of typical instrumental john probably had in mind to back them- and at least in my mind going that typical route would do no real favors for the vocals and it wouldjust be a decent mid song, i actually think the instrumental exalts them quite well, though i wish there was one section of the song that was like that, just more stripped back strings or something to add some contrast

    I thought it was ok. It definitely wasn't the "mind-blowing, final Beatles song" that I feel it was hyped up to be, but I still think it's worth a listen if you're a Beatles fan. It definitely feels more modern than what one would expect from a Beatles tune; it reminds me a lot of Paul's newer albums with hints of Radiohead on the production side. I wasn't initially sold when I heard the isolated John vocal in the video, but in context with the rest of the instruments, I thought it really did sound like him.

      Not really. I've listened to it multiple times on different devices and with a proper stereo/headphone set up. It is not loud or drowns the vocals. It really depends on the personal definition of "loudness". If it is indeed too much, the general public would have noticed it already. Looking at the transients, it’s a giant rectangle- proof of what people are saying. I’m even seeing people talk about how loud the piano is in these comments. If it doesn’t bother you, fine. While the cut line was amazing it was not complete and clean. John's pitch on the high notes are not good and some words are mumbled or just "do do doos" which is understandable, it's a demo. I'd rather they cut it off than use full AI to recreate his voice and add some lyrics. On a side note, I don't think it is bad to have a backing vocal " I dont want to lose you..." only, on the bridge while the solo slide is played. But I guess the lyrics won't fit for what they are going for.

John is no longer with us, and while I am sure he would have wanted to do it right and natural, so many living artists already use it at this point.
