Actually no. They aren’t done by a committee. They take however many ppl, all walks of life, and each of them list their top 1 or 5 or whatever it is. Then they tally those votes. That’s how artists that you wouldn’t think of as top singers like Fela Kuti get on here.

Not having Layne Staley on here is a crime. Layne had an insane range and in terms of raw emotion and passion, Layne Staley might just be one of the best vocalists ever for that.
Also, THE HARMONIES. Alice In Chain's had some of the best harmonies ever in music in my opinion, Jerry and Laynes voices just blend perfectly and really help to give them something unique.

Personally I think you gotta put Ella over Sinatra any day of the week. She had the range on top of being just as charismatic, super versatile and extremely technically skilled.
THANK YOU! Sinatra is iconic and influential, but his technical ability in terms of jazz is just pretty good. Ella Fitzgerald was a master. Really calling a sinatra a jazz singer doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, he never improvised, like ever. (Like solos, I mean)

More importantly, I don't think the replicability of Sinatra's voice is a point in his favor. Sure, his voice was pretty, and he had skill to back it up, but that doesn't make him better than her. Quite the opposite, Ella is iconic BECAUSE few can do what she did.

All you need to do is listen to her and Duke Ellingtons 7 minute rendition of It Don’t Mean A Thing and that’s all you’ll ever need to hear to understand why she should always be higher than Frank Sinatra on any list that involves singing. Frank has the reputation he has because of the time he made music and because of his race and gender. He has phenomenal style but when it comes to singing there are a plethora of singers apart from Ella from his time that could sing circles around him.
I’m blown away at MJ being that low, especially putting Ariana so much higher than him. I’d argue that Ariana could make the list, though DEFINITELY lower down it- yeah she is literally impossible to understand sometimes but she does have more of a range and ability than people realize when you look at her Broadway-style work. Janet being missing is also strange.
Undoubtedly Mr. Fantano’s strongest vocal performance on the channel to date. Bravo sir.

Eddie himself was pretty great and one of my fav singers ever. I blame the knock-offs for ruining that vocal style and turning it into a parody of itself. With Eddie it sounded very natural (prolly because the anatomy -- of his cheekbone, jawline, nose, throat, mask and tongue was super suited for it) and powerful because it had heart. Plus it fit the music and lyrics so well. But with Scott Stapp, Bush, Shaun Morgan, Chad Kroeger, f*ck me you know the rest. And we all know the story. It just became this stupid, marble-mouthed, straining-on-the-toilet singing thing that is really one of the worst trends that ever happened in popular music.
Blaming Eddie Vedder for the imitators that followed Pearl Jam’s success is weird; are people blaming Ian Curtis for the guy from Interpol stealing his style? It’s so weird to blame the person who was ripped off for people ripping them off.

I kinda agree. But you can't deny that she is probably the most influential artist of 2010s when it comes to singing and vocal style, and her talent in mainstream pop music business is a rarity.
This is a list you really can’t do without separating by genre. A soul singer is gonna have a much different voice than a punk rock singer, but nothing makes one inherently better than the other. That or make it an unranked list.

As a New Orleans dude, I don’t think John Fogerty was specifically borrowing from black Louisianan musicians. His style and CCR’s aesthetic is like a vague pastiche of black and white/Cajun Louisiana musicians that almost becomes its own thing. Even though his style is a bit appropriative, I still love it because it became original in its own way.

The criteria for this list seemed completely arbitrary to me. For some they're basing it off of vocal ability, others for emotion, others for songwriting, and others for impact/legacy. It was all over the place.
Also the edit while talking about Bruce Dickinson made me LOL. I was definitely upset and confused that he wasn't on this list too
It should be all over the place. If it was just a list of the most technically gifted we wouldn't recognize most of the people on the list.
@Matejko108 wouldn't learn anything interesting. Being technically gifted is only a small part of what makes a great singer. That's why you use a range of parameters.

I know everyone is collectively fuming about Celine Dion's exclusion, but can we just talk about the fact that Mike Patton wasn't on here? Mike Patton is possibly THE most versatile vocalist in rock and metal, the way he can essentially change voices on the fly on songs like Mr Bungle's Squeeze Me Macaroni and Faith No More's Land Of Sunshine is genuinely mind blowing, and as much as I love Serj, listening to Mr Bungle shows that he was clearly taking a lot of his style from Patton.

God, people will probably not like this but.. I personally think the best voice comes from a cover artist. Leroy Sanchez’s voice got me into to vocals. The passion and talent is there clearly, and utilized very well. Hope this gets some people to check him out.
