- Welcome to our episode of our new house in the Azores. This is Part 3 of our series we bought a house in Portugal. This is video vlog 22 of our journey on Pico Island.
On this episode Laura and I start cleaning up around the property; especially weeds and garbage. We also trimmed some fruit trees such as figs, lime etc.
On the last part of the video we start a wood fire in the old pig house; we needed to burn some wood and clean rust from an old grill. It was pretty cool. We will be cooking some nice Pico frango/chicken here soon.
A couple of working days were split between Lajes and the Sao Mateus house; Laura had to finish painting the office. You will see throughout the video how amazing the weather was during these days of clean up; nothing but blue sky's and still ocean.
Carlos also shares his thoughts on why its important to follow your passions/dreams. If moving to an island/other country, full or part time is what would make you happy; find a way to do it!
We hope you enjoy the video and being with us on our journey on Pico Island.
Take care of each other!

I think it's lovely that you are returning to your childhood home and have fond memories. You have to keep the roses, infact I think you should plant more.
I feel very thankful for keeping the connection. Hopefully keep a few rose bushes. Cheers
My husband is from pico. He was born in Cete cidades. I was born in São Miguel. The house you bought looks amazing to retire in. Beautiful view. And the view is what makes it all better. Makes you forget the pain staking work that’s needed to get things the way you like to see it. I can see it as a great vacation rental if you fix up that suits. Make sure you include some outdoor space for the renters to enjoy their time outside in the evenings. Keep up the good work !
Thank you so much Manny; appreciate the kind words. The view of the ocean sooths the soul! We are making the outside very livable! Take care! Saude!
My husband and I enjoyed this version of your experience of Pico..we have a vacation/retirement home in Terceira...going for good beginning of 2022..God willing... So nice to see expats close by..we see the top of Pico from where we are when we visit. Best wishes to you both
We are glad you are enjoying our videos. Terceira is wonderful; we always enjoy our visits. You will be there soon; 2022 is around the corner! Take care! Saude!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
What a great team you two are!! Carlos you are a great story teller and both of you are very positive. Love it!
That you so much; we appreciate the kind words. Take care!
I have been very lost lately after being through a divorce after a year by myself have asking what do i really want.this lead me to decide i want to visit azores where my grandma and grandpa were born.my grandma from fayal and grandpa was from pico.you guys have helped me to decide to put my efforts towards this idea.thank you and i wish you the best in your endeavors.👍
Going through a divorce is very hard, scary at times. It may be the perfect time to visit the Azores. On these islands You can connect with nature, the ocean, fresh air, etc I always feel connected to my grandparents here and they been gone for a while. Good luck, Take care!
Hey Carlos. Love watching your journey from Bermuda 🇧🇲.
I was born in Sao Miguel and my father emigrated to Bermuda back in early 60s. Love life in Bermuda but nothing like mother land Acores..
Keep the rose bushes..👍
Thanks Dennis; glad you enjoy the videos. I have a good friend in Bermuda; his name is Fernando Oliveira. I grew up with him in Canada; his parents came from Pico. What a small world! They will have once a week flights from Sao Miguel starting this tourist season. We will have to visit! Take care!
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 yes I know Fernando. However I believe he may have returned to live in Canada with his family.. haven't seen him in a while. Do let me know if you venture out this way. I can show you around even though Bermuda is very small..
@@dennisrodrigues1877 Wow; it is a small world after all. I did hear that is back in my neck of the woods; Oakville. I will let you know when I get back. Bermuda is small; 20 by 2kms and made various islands. Take care!
My grandmother is crying in heaven... you threw the funch away and we could not get it to grow easily in theU.S.
Oh no! I hope she forgives me; we will keep some! Take care!
the fennel is good to cook with the roses would be good to keep. i am sure that you will both work out the garden enjoy.
Thank you for the advise Hellen. We will cook the fennel with some other vegetables, we will also keep one of the rose plants. Take care!
Minute 13:00 I´m going to remove this with a shovel.
A square-nosed shovel is known in the US as a "transfer shovel". It is primarily used for moving dirt, sand, gravel etc. from one spot to another. For digging, you should use a rounded-point shovel. It will take less energy and give better results.
Good luck with the weeds. We moved from California in early 2019 to the Silver Coast of Portugal and have 3000 sq.meters of property. Trying to say ahead of the weeds is like painting the Golden Gate bridge - you start on one end, get the the other end and then start again.
You are correct; getting new shovel. Weeds, plants, trees grow like crazy! Love the silver coast. Cheers
I live in Terceira to many years, after I move to canada 🇨🇦 because I have a daughter with special needs and I nead to come to Canada, but we never know in the future. All the best for you in Terceira.
Canada and Portugal are 2 great countries. Hopefully you can still visit once in a while. Take care Elizabeth!
Thanks for sharing your life with us, like one of the vieuwers before wrote. You are living my dream...And i think much more people share that same feeling, including myself.
I once spent 8 months on Pico (Sao Roque), and even bought a piece of land myself (S'Antana). Now I'm trying to save, and hopefully return to the Acores.
By seing your vidoes inspires me a lot..
That is amazing Jorge; we feel your passion. Being from Pico myself; I always feel emotional when I here a similar story to mine. I appreciate you joining our journey; just keep in mind that you have already started your Pico journey as well. Take care! Saude!
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Obrigado Tambem, e boa continuacao e Saude..

Loved this video❤️you guys are definitely inspiring and Carlos I loved your inspirational talk...it’s my dream to move to Terceira someday where my family roots are. My husband and I dream about it so often...your talk couldn’t have come at a better time. I can’t wait until it’s a reality someday 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for your kind words Liz! I really spoke from the heart; like minded like you and your husband get exactly these type of feelings. I love Terceira; I'm sure your dream will become reality as well. Take care! Saude!
Nice! One suggestion: If you're going to keep the satellite disk, perhaps paint over the "Meo" logo?
I think the dish will be leaving the premises! Take care!
When the Azores open back up.......we will be there asap.
The Azores will be waiting! Take care!
Good choice! I live in Faial island right in front of Pico island. Great place!

Your doing a great job Carlos. Its alot of work but well worth it. Its looking great.
I am kinda living threw you guys right know. I don't want all the hastle of traveling to the Azores right know because of Covid., but l am truely missing my home their in Faial. These videos reminde me of the beautiful times my husband and i have when we are their by the ocean and nature. Take care
Thanks so much for the kind words Maria. I am advising people not to travel at the moment. I think most memories of the Azores have the ocean in it. Take care! Saude!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
Yes,Carlos you are still a Picaroto!loved, loved the video.
Thank you so much Maria; glad you enjoyed it. I am a Picaroto! lol Take care! Saude!
Terceira is my oyster. And just thinking that I can be living there as early as this summer is the only thing keeping me going right now. Well done on those much needed jobs. I know it’s a lot of work but you must feel such a sense of pride and satisfaction standing back now and seeing the fruits of your labour.
That's just around the corner; way to go. Terceira is fun island; Biscoitos is a cool spot. It is extremely rewarding! Cheers!
Congratulations
Thank you very much Lorena! Saude!
What a wonderful blank slate! I sure wish to do as you both are doing! I'd keep the rose, prune and fertilize it...great weather for roses. Having a fig tree is so awesome! I go out in the mornings here and eat my breakfast....figs and blueberries and raspberries...wonderful pleasure! Great Banque set up too! Keep up the good life! Blessings to you both!
Thank you for your kind words Jeanne; blank slate has a great ring to it. This could really be a great place; we can feel it! Take care!
Great job guys! The garden is look great.
It was therapeutical for us, watching you
work on the yard. We really enjoyed the video. Cheers 🍻
Glad you guys enjoyed; therapeutic for us as well. Take care Armando! Saude!
Good work.
Thank you!
The yard is already looking more loved and cared for. I have a fig tree in our coastal town in California and I prune it after the figs are harvested and the branches are still mostly bare. I believe the fruit only grows on the new growth area of the branch. Just don’t take more than one third off the tree at each pruning to prevent shock.
Thank you Debbie : appreciate the pruning tips. It's a work in progress; will take our time getting it done. Take care!
Inspiring journey and courage Carlos and Laura! Thank you for sharing your projects and plans with us dreamers.
Thank you for your kind words Emeline; glad you are enjoying the videos. Take care and be safe!
Keep the roses
That is another vote for me; Laura is still ahead on the count. Thank you Maria! Saude!
Congratulations.Peaceful place.God bless.
Thank you! Very peaceful Maria! Saude!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
Nice work done with the weeds! Keep going. I just loved your simple barbecue!
Thank you Isabel! I can't wait to BBQ on it! Cheers!
Carlos, what about vineyard, if any native to your area grapes could be recommended 😁
There are quite a bit of grape varietals; some are native. Not sure if this is what you were asking. It would be awesome to have a small vineyard; you never know. Take care Vincent!
You guys are working hard!
What a difference already!
Love it.
Thanks Maria! Hard work is paying off! Take care! Saude!

@@HoneyDogDash That sounds like an amazing plan. Glad you like the house. Cheers
Doing the right thing.. keep as much good vegetation as possible ( yes, including rose bushes ) get rid of the nasties. You obviously you like the old style of doing things ... me I would have invested in a power weedwacker and some weed killer spray and spend more time enjoying the magnificent view. Place is looking good, please do more videos.
Thanks Roger. Glad you are enjoying the videos. We just pulled weeds in the front; this guy we know weed wacked the back and the cows took care of the open field. Take care! Saude!
Looks great guys! Love the humor you put into your videos. Can't wait to come to the Azores and Pico Island. Hope to see you there.
Thank you Sue! Humor is always lurking around the corner! We and the Azores are waiting . Take care!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
It is the best time ....keep the brain and physical body active. It is good for health and well being. If you don't use it, you'll loose it. Looks and feels like hard work but very rewarding. Beautiful home and location. Awesome! Wish I could volunteer. ..but I am too far away.
You are right on the money; have to use it before you lose it. I will put you on the volunteer list; lol. Take care!
It’s looking really nice! Good job 👍
Thank you! Take care!
wow - i am learning about the Azores only recently through the videos of La Vagabonde ( you know it ?)Now I am binging your channel; i am very drawn to Portugal and have been learning about Madeira too . My partner and i are working on becoming Digital Nomads in the next few years. All these portuguese islands in the Atlantic look snd sound amazing !!! How is the situation with finding the workmen to renovate a home ? Is having a large volcano causing the ground to be warmer ? How about hot springs ? It is very good to know that the internet on the island is good.
I want to learn as much as possible.
Great to hear that Gail. Hopefully you are enjoying them. Hopefully you will visit one day! I will check out La Vagabond; thanks for sharing. Take care!
Wow guys another great video. It looks so good after all your hard work!! Echoing what someone else commented, you are living my dream and just loving being on this journey with you guys! Take care and stay safe 🙏 ❤
Thanks Susie! We will balance the work; have fun as well. Glad you are along with us! Take care!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
Btw awesome job on the house and office! Good luck and thanks for sharing ☺️
Thanks again Liz! Wait until you see our renovations plan! Take care!
Keep the roses, care for them one year and if the roses don't please you next year then remove them.
That is not a bad idea Janice; will run it by Laura! Cheers!

Thank you so much Natalia; we're glad you enjoyed it. I have a feeling the roses are on the way out! Take care! Saude!
Citrus does really well there, so lemon, lime and orange are essential
Extremely well! You can pretty much grow anything on these islands; very fertile! Take care!

Thank you so much; glad you liked it Natalia. Take care!
Your pruning will do miracles just wait. Also maybe get a round nosed shovel for weed removal.
Thanks Gerry; getting a round shovel and a pick! Take care!
Carlos, it was really interesting to see your story. How did you estimate the price of reconstruction? You already had experience? Many people, even among locals, say that it’s difficult to find the builders. And the quality of work is poor.
We are learning on the job, and learning a lot. You are correct; quality abor is at an all time low. We will be releasing another renovationvideo soon, stay tuned. Take care!
Greetings and great video. Iwas wondering about your utilities there. Is electricity all over the island? Do you have public water , cistern or well.? Thanks and enjoy your new home.
Thank you Ken: glad you're enjoying the videos. You can choose from electric or gas when it comes to your main utilities; very affordable I might add. The main source of water throughout the island is public. People also have tanks that collect water from the rain; mostly used for gardening and animals. I also think that wells can be found; not sure. I hope that helps! Take care!
Well done👍I think you deserve at least 2 Sagres 😇
At least 2 ; large ones that is! Thanks Lars! Saude!
Já tens uma churasqueira😂😂😂
Ha! Ha! Simples! Saude Paulo! .
Okay...props to you two!!🥳
I am looking at property to purchase, and I wonder about how to handle the humidity on an island. Will books mold? Will electronics corrode? I have not seen central air or heat units, so humidity is an issue. How do islanders deal with such mundane issues in paradise?😀
Thank you E Grace. There is various heating options available on the island. There are these very popular wall units that that have both heat and air. It gets humid in the old Lajes house we stay in; we have dehumidifier and a few electric heaters. A lot of people also have wood fireplaces as well. New builds have better insulation, but you can also insulate the older ones. I hope this helps! Smaller houses are a lot easier to control. Take care!
Hello dear, how are you doing?
I love the tranquility and the water views!
Very mesmerizing Joe! Ocean views are good for the spirit! Take care!

If you are available to offer me any information that might assist me I’d be most grateful. Is there anyway for me to email you please?
Glad you are enjoying the videos Sharon. Not sure what information I can give you at this time, maybe the best is to watch the videos and see if Pico captures you. Carlos, at 2:11 it looks like you tasted some of the weeds you were pulling and with the footage sped up it made me laugh a little. What was that you tasted?
That is very funny; I laughed as well after I saw it. That is a type of fennel; its called funcho in Portuguese. Its like a licorice. Take care!
How much does it cost for a house like the one you guys bought

Hi Guys , can I ask your ages, do you have any children and do you worry about your health. All have to be taken into account when moving to more remote places in the world. 🤗
You are absolutely correct Alan, so much to analyze before making any move along these lines. This is why its crucial to take your time, educate yourself and figure out how you want to live the rest of your life. We are in our 50's, no children, will live 50/50 between Canada and Azores. Yes we worry about things like our health, future and more, like most people do. I will add one other important thing, the Azores is about 5 to 6 hours away from most of North America and between 2 - 3hours from most of Europe, I wouldn't consider this remote. Take care! Saude!
Is Pico behind your new home an active volcano ?
The Pico mountain volcano is dormant not active! Take care Giuseppe! Cheers!
