  • Welcome to our episode of our new house in the Azores. This is Part 3 of our series we bought a house in Portugal. This is video vlog 22 of our journey on Pico Island.
    On this episode Laura and I start cleaning up around the property; especially weeds and garbage. We also trimmed some fruit trees such as figs, lime etc.
    On the last part of the video we start a wood fire in the old pig house; we needed to burn some wood and clean rust from an old grill. It was pretty cool. We will be cooking some nice Pico frango/chicken here soon.
    A couple of working days were split between Lajes and the Sao Mateus house; Laura had to finish painting the office. You will see throughout the video how amazing the weather was during these days of clean up; nothing but blue sky's and still ocean.
    Carlos also shares his thoughts on why its important to follow your passions/dreams. If moving to an island/other country, full or part time is what would make you happy; find a way to do it!
    We hope you enjoy the video and being with us on our journey on Pico Island.
    Take care of each other!

    I think it's lovely that you are returning to your childhood home and have fond memories. You have to keep the roses, infact I think you should plant more.

    My husband is from pico. He was born in Cete cidades. I was born in São Miguel. The house you bought looks amazing to retire in. Beautiful view. And the view is what makes it all better. Makes you forget the pain staking work that’s needed to get things the way you like to see it. I can see it as a great vacation rental if you fix up that suits. Make sure you include some outdoor space for the renters to enjoy their time outside in the evenings. Keep up the good work !

    Minute 13:00 I´m going to remove this with a shovel.
    A square-nosed shovel is known in the US as a "transfer shovel". It is primarily used for moving dirt, sand, gravel etc. from one spot to another. For digging, you should use a rounded-point shovel. It will take less energy and give better results.
    Good luck with the weeds. We moved from California in early 2019 to the Silver Coast of Portugal and have 3000 sq.meters of property. Trying to say ahead of the weeds is like painting the Golden Gate bridge - you start on one end, get the the other end and then start again.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552

      Thank you E Grace. There is various heating options available on the island. There are these very popular wall units that that have both heat and air. It gets humid in the old Lajes house we stay in; we have dehumidifier and a few electric heaters. A lot of people also have wood fireplaces as well. New builds have better insulation, but you can also insulate the older ones. I hope this helps! Smaller houses are a lot easier to control. Take care!

If you are available to offer me any information that might assist me I’d be most grateful. Is there anyway for me to email you please?

We will be doing other videos in the future about the Azores in general. You can always send me an email if you have specific questions. Take care.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  Před 3 lety

      You are absolutely correct Alan, so much to analyze before making any move along these lines. This is why its crucial to take your time, educate yourself and figure out how you want to live the rest of your life. We are in our 50's, no children, will live 50/50 between Canada and Azores. Yes we worry about things like our health, future and more, like most people do. I will add one other important thing, the Azores is about 5 to 6 hours away from most of North America and between 2 - 3hours from most of Europe, I wouldn't consider this remote. Take care! Saude!
