  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Berlin for its continued support for his country, following German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck's visit to Kyiv earlier in the day.
"We appreciate Germany's leadership role, which helps not only us in Ukraine to protect lives, but all of Europe itself - to preserve the very Europe that knows how to live peacefully, knows the law and knows how to take care of people," Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Thursday.
Habeck arrived in Ukraine on Thursday for a surprise visit. Zelenskyy said he discussed the situation on the front and the particular need for air defense systems.
Speaking to DW on Thursday, Habeck said he was optimistic that Moscow "can be stopped."

It is very hard for the current government of Germany to undo the failures of the long years of A.Merkel. There was nothing left in the depots, speaking frankly. More and more aid is getting delivered to Ukraine. Patriots have to be bought in the US and IrisT need to get produced. I hope that Scholz and his team will consider to hand over Taurus systems. They could do serious damage to the russian war production, supply lines (Kerch bridge) and other targets of high value!

I wonder if the basis of German support for Ukraine is the same as others in the free world. For me, as an American, its about a free nation that doesn't want to fall under the tyranny or Russia. A tiny fraction of our budget is all Ukraine needs. We don't even need to put our troops at risk.

Yeah, good idea but they should do that with their own intelligence and military capacity. Any other way is another step up the escalatory ladder. If you hit where Russia missiles are produced in mainland Russia, the Russian will retaliate by hitting where the missiles was produced in Europe. Every decision should be weighed on the scale of cost & benefits

Not if the U.S starts shipping weapons again. Ukraine has been forced to retreat because they simply don't have enough ammunition. For that you can thank MAGA man Mike Johnson. As the speaker of the house, he makes the decision as to what bills come to the floor for a vote. There is a vocal minority of Republicans who are pro Puting and are against supporting Ukraine.

Ukraine has invested heavily in their defence since they oweturned their leader, that prowed to be litle less than a russian puppet, But they are at WAR and have been so since 2014. They are running out of ammo. Though prepared, the long front and heavy attacs mean that they need help if we want peace in Europe. They are doing the fighting and suffering and they need all the support we can give.
They dont even mind if you give it as a loan.

@@ragingmonk6080 They did. Please spend some time on the subjekt. No matter what, if we want peace in Europe Putin must be stopped from annexing neighbouring contries territories and going to war. He (like every other member of UN) pledged not to move borders by force. He signed in Minsk not to attac Ukraine. Ukraine gave up their N-weapons when USSR split up. I have followed Russia since the 80'es. Things are only getting worse in Russia. Putin is starting wars to stay in power. Ukraine has got nothing for free. They are figting and defending them selfs and the rest of us. Do you wanna let your weapons and ammo collect dust until war comes to you?

@@ragingmonk6080Ukraine spent over 4% of their GDP on defense before they got invaded. Go watch the military parade they had in 2021, it's still available on YT. They knew what was coming.
But they were the second poorest country in Europe (after Moldova).
AND, even if you want to, you can't just buy Patriots. The US has to agree to that sale. For the longest time, the US didn't even allow the sale of frigging Javelins to Ukraine! Obama didn't want to sell them. Which means that also any other country that had some was forbidden from selling them to Ukraine. Because the country that makes them has a say.
Ukraine only got Javelins after Poroshenko and Trump met. Apparently, Trump and Poro hit it off on a personal level. Poroshenko is what Trump desperately wants to be - a successful business man. He's not called the "chocolate oligarch" for nothing, he has a very successful business that makes chocolate and sweets and cakes and stuff and sells it in a lot of eastern European countries. Big. Think like Suchard or Ferrero or something. So, Poro managed to charm Trump and Trump agree to give/sell them Javelins. Then a week later, Trump had a meeting with Putin and then conveniently tried to "forget" his promise to Poroshenko. It took many months to finally convince him to actually honor the promise and let those Javelins go to Ukraine.
Now tell me again how Ukraine was supposed to get Patriots?
Same goes for IRIS-T and SAMP-T - nobody would sell them. And the S200 and S300 Ukraine had from its Soviet times, do you honestly think the ruzzians were gonna sell them more? Or S400s? So, where exactly was a poor country that has just half the population of Germany supposed to get good air defense from?
