Brian's body language is quite passive, staying low on the floor, head hanging down, wrapping himself in a blanket... closed posture. He is effectively communicating with the other inmates his lower status.
He has no lower status. He’s actually a law abiding citizen that wants to go home to his family. He’s not stuck being incarcerated like the rest of the losers in there.

The problem with Jeff and Brian is that they obviously behaved like they weren't prepared for any kind of confrontation. That gave their undercover secret away. Every real prisoner accepts their reality and is prepared for all the messy conflicts.

It's easy to read peoples behavior in environments or situations that produce fight or flight responses within the body, especially if the one observing has been in a fair amount of high stress, fight or flight situations first hand. He wouldn't ever swing first, and unless he was getting repeatedly hit by someone and he suddenly feels that his life is in jeopardy and depends on him fighting back, I don't even see him willing to show any aggression physically in return. His whole demeanor is giving off weakness, and it was like the from the start. Anyone confident in themselves isnt going to try buying acceptance from everyone. Not a good look, and if that weirdo didn't assault him, I guarantee it would've been someone else if the day came he couldn't buy or give someone what they wanted from him
