Hey everybody !!
I've been asked to do some more jazzy videos...so here is a little pedagogical one. First I did it for fun, but I thought it would be cool to put it on youtube...
Of course you can also harmonize this melody (G-F-Eb) in other keys to have richer chords !
*All examples harmonised and recorded by Jean-Baptiste Craipeau
* No auto-tune or pitch correction (as you may hear...the key isn't very solid, sorry about that !)
HOPE YOU LIKE IT !!
Say which one do you prefer...

He is. In a sorta universal fashion. Or sorta common people's fashion, whichever point of you you prefer.
V/V-V-I
pro trick : watch movies at KaldroStream. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Abraham Rhys Yea, have been watching on Kaldrostream for since december myself :D
@Abraham Rhys Yea, been watching on kaldroStream for since november myself =)
"How close you can get to Jacob Collier in 3 minutes"
#2 is by far the most beautiful one in my opinion
very churchy
Yeah it's sounds so great, he should make an entire song on that line!
When the chord is sus
So Beach Boys
13 sounds like something Jacob Collier would do
It ends on a Jacobean chord for sure lmao
Well actually 13 is as far as most muaicians go but jacob actually goes up to 19ths
I think you should consider sharing this on Facebook. Someone shared this on Facebook and it already has 200K+ views in less than 5 days... Oh small note: He edited the video... There is no reference to you except on the music scores...
What a fantastic lesson, arrangement, and singing. This is a year's worth of study to absorb, understand, and be able to use. Thank you so much!
ah....I can even already feel so much warmth just by listening to this great music practice lesson... such is the power of Music... :') i wish there are more 'jazzy' music in the tv & radio stations nowadays...
That 6 part composition at the end of the video, goes to show that your voice is a finely honed musical instrument. That was so beautiful:)
I like the last one the most. It gives me the goose bumps whenever I listen to it.
Already bored? Are you kidding?? This is VERY nicely done!
Non jazz or moozik theory nerds get bored
send me a private message, I'll let you know how to obtain some of my arrangements. thanks for your support !!
Every 7th chord can be replaced by its tritone substitute. 3rd/7th becomes 7th/3rd. Here the chord progression is very bacis : II V I so I let II (F7) it could be B7 but would sound a bit "poor" due to the octave between bass and top part ;)
Please make more of these videos! Just this one was extremely helpful!! Thanks JB :)
Am I the only one who founds this oddly satisfying?
Of course not! I hear way too many 1940s songs because there are so many vocal groups that sing like this. The merry macs for example. I really like "breathless" and "The Hut Sut" song by them. Though I do wish there were more modern groups that sing like this. They are very rare nowadays
Gil Evans style is SICK ! Man, what a sound !!
The second one! Dear god.. your voice is incredible!
my buddy and I are in school studying music and your #13 spoke to us.. it is INCREDIBLY beautiful
@AndrewKesler cool ! I'm glad you like it...It took me some hours to put that powerpoint file on iMovie...lolol
This is SO good. An instant reference from one voicing to another. JUST what we need! MORE please!!
That was really neat, especially seeing the Hi-lo's version. It was right on the money. This is one of the best youtube clips I have found.
Man, I always used this video to show my students some reharmonization possibilities, but today I clicked to see your other videos and WOOOW! You`re really good! Excellent vocal production! Congrats! ;)
3 is my favorite, I could cry, it's so beautiful.
Dude, this video was off the hook! You have such a vast musical knowledge, it's absurd! I have difficulties writing one version, you can write like 10 different versions :). Amazing skills!! Kudos
oh yeah why did I say F13 lol it's an Fmin9 sorry for this mistake !!
Incredible! It is a cool chord in #8, and I think the question mark comes because they usually don't write minor seconds on outer voices (the soprano and alto part in that one), HOWEVER, as an effect, I think it's great, and you could probably do an entire video of harmonies built around that minor second. Awesome vocals and a great musical exploration video; thanks for making it!
What a killer video! I've done some 4 part arranging, and being the Four Freshmen/Hi-Lo's fan that I am, I have a particular fondness for the II V I with the natural 9 moving to the b9, and then the 5th. Great singing and ideas!
wow, this is insanely g o o d. came here looking for an original happy birthday clip fpr a friend and instead of wishing her happy birthday, i been checking out all your videos :-) vous êtes le génie!
Way cool. You're a vocal jazz hero!
The second one is awesome!
@Jonjonathanmark
Thanks! That's quite a good piece of advice, for I know and listen to Take 6 for only a little bit more than 20 years...It doesn't prevent me from enjoying soul in JB Craipeau's arrangements and music.
excellent‼️
this was great!! I'd love to get more into vocal jazz a cappella arranging. Do you have any book recommendations to get started?
This is fabulous! What an education in 2 minutes. I'd been looking for some help arranging barbershop type ideas and it never occurred to me to look into my jazz training this closely. Thank you so much for posting this. I will be re-watching several times I think. :)
JB, This is very well put together, it was very helpful because I was able to hear and see exactly what you where doing thank you my Friend.
This is deep soul music. We need it. Thanks!
I'll make it very easy for you to understand.
All you need is to count the dots vertically.
For example in the exercise one he has 4 parts in the exercise twelve he puts 5 in.
It sounds weird to musicians but i hope it helps...;-)
Love it. Period.
11, 12, and 13 were my faves.
@ifiwereu well, Cedric Dent has a Ph. D. in music theory. One of the original members, Mervyn Warren has a masters in music, Claude McKnight plays the trombone, and Mark Kibble does a great deal of their arranging. So they are certainly accomplished musicians as well as vocalists and I'm sure that they incorporate a great deal of theory into what they do.
My thinking is that there are VERY few people who can hear complex harmonies without having any kind of knowledge of the theory behind it.
Fantastic!!! Give us more classes and thank you sooooooo very much!!Merci!!!!!
What a fabulous educational video on harmony theory.
this is beautiful
Ver niceharmonies I really dig the n°2 and the n°12, the Gil Evans type of chord is also amazing. Great singing hats of !
Incredible lesson man! You deserve 100K subs al least!
wow. i can imagine the whole song with all o' that
I have downloaded this as mp3, it's so beautiful!
Awesome hope to find more videos Luke these in your chanel
@jazzsingerlady The fact that these guys have recognizable credentials does not dismiss the fact that music is an art. Such sounds from the perspective of the performer/artist, in many cases have no theoretical basis. I say this to say that, much of what Mervyn did was what he could hear. If you heard his first album called "A special Blend", you would not relegate so much to theory. Mark listened a lot to the Singers Unlimited and Gene Puerling and Big Band sounds...I went to school with them
I though this will sound like a ridiculous comment but... I'm speechless!
J'en suis bouche bée!!
Beau bonjour du Québec! §:c)
Really interesting - and very useful. Thank you!
Beautiful, clear demo!!
this is important.
you are a lighthouse, sir!
WoW! Im just learning the vocal arrangment. Awesome.
Hey JB! I'm a big fan. I hears rumors that you might be making another video like this! It would be really helpful if you could include the inversion when you write out the lead sheet symbols for the chords. So for example, an Eb chord in first inversion would be Eb/G. Inversions are really important to recognize for the purposes of voice leading and melodic bass lines. :) Thanks!
I need something like this more and more
Thanks! it is real useful! love the combination that you attempt ( fifth example)
Excellent stuff man
now thats a REAL musician folks.... well done!
11 is a fav. Great!!
Great work! One little comment: there should be an A in the F13 chord, example 9.
This was extremely beneficial for me. Thank you!
1, 2, 3,4, 6 and 9 are my personal favorites.
Thanks! it is real useful! love the combination that you attempt ( fifth example)
I love Yumiko Matsuko too, tried her "over the rainbow" hahah.. it painstakingly beautiful
thanks for the great tutorial!!!
Absolutely amazing lesson! Straight to the point with no waffle. Please do some more of these or write a book. Are there any books you could recommend for this typs of arranging? Can your own arrangemnts be purchased? Anyway, great singing and great arranging...keep it up!
Wow!!! The Singers Unlimited meet Take 6!!! No, seriously: fantastic!
Beautiful
i've been seeking the video like this one!!! Thank you so much!!
Please put up more videos on vocal harmony so that you can reach into your instrumentalist audience base!
Nice lesson here!
Now this is actually very helpful!
@MrGWHLevy Take 6 most, then Singers Unlimited, Hi-lo's, real group etc. But Boyz II Men ?? not at all =)
How about the (old) Four Freshmen? my personal fav, so elementary and pure.. great singers and musicians also. Good stuff btw, like this video!
this must be my lucky year
Thank You so much for uploading your tutorial
it is awesome and for me exact the right timing :-)
I'am about to step into a close harmony group (if they'll exept me) and you just prepared me of what to expect of it, now i'm even more prepaired keep up the great work. you left me no choice to check out your other work and the names too Grtzzz Bart
These are exellent!
This is awesome man! Can you make more videos for different types of progressions? I've been arranging a cappella songs for a while and want to get into more jazzy arrangements. :)
Number 2, hands down.
13. Hauntingly amazing
Thank you oh so much, that's a gorgeous teaching video!!! Keep it up!
Thanks for posting.. very educational and inspiring
this helps a lot. thanks
mmm I loved it ! thanks !!
A great little tutorial. Thank you.
Fantastic! Right to the point! Thanks.
Absolument génial!!!! ça va m'être très utile pour faire des arrangements, merci mille fois! :)
This is SO useful, please post more tutorials!
Thanks that was an insane lesson!!! much love xxx
Great video thanks man
WOW!!!!!! SO COOL!!!!!
Awesome !
What microphone did you use? You´re voice is awesome for this!!
What an incredible talent!!! Thank you for your posts. What group comes the closest to the Singers Unlimited nowadays??
Awesome!!!!
@ifiwereu well, of course both of our perspectives are our opinions, I just can't imagine that they would have theoretical knowledge (which they do) and not put it to use. Even if a person has natural talent (which they do), having at least a basic knowledge of music theory can only help give them more of a vocabulary.
Oh, and I've been a student of the "Special Blend" album for most of my life. You can test me- I can sing every part of every song and I'll promise you I'd be accurate.
Love it Love it - shows you did your homework JB!
Some modal parallel motion would have been nice...
Keep it up man!
Excelente!!!
Very nice!
Great, thank you!
Muchas gracias por este material, es muy interesante
Unbelievable! Great job!
Amazing! Thanks for this lesson!
