  • How to Paint Sunflowers, a 9x12 oil painting, is a Fast Motion version of a complete art instruction video. Although this video is mostly in fast motion, there are pauses of real time painting where I offer voice Instruction describing my techniques and thoughts.
I painted this alla prima, or all in one painting session, except for a few touch ups that I noticed a day or two later.
These sunflowers grew in fields around Hays, Kansas where I finished my MFA in studio painting. I have completed several paintings from these fields of flowers, which have all been sold previously in galleries like the Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs.
My method of oil painting is not like the formula paintings Bob Ross created that so many artists around the world have come to love. My painting style is based on principles professional artists use like abstract color shapes, edge quality for greater realism, shadow and highlight, color theory or convincing color relationships and establishing correct values throughout the painting.
Part of the fun of painting these flowers was the brushwork. In the full version of this art instruction video that is now part of our Master Oil Painting monthly membership site, I slow down three separate moments in the video so you can see clearly how I apply the brushstrokes with three different types of brushes and brush techniques.
The full art video contains voice over instruction and shows every brushstroke of the painting process.

Most of my landscape painting is alla prima or wet on wet and created from plein air studies, imagination and digital reference photos.

Nice...I am not even a beginner....learning. In my humble opinion, oil painting is a craft, as is any technical work ..first of all, we need, and is most important to learn technique of using chemical products - paints, solvents, thinners etc. so our painting can "work" and stay compact for years to come...not to crack, be darker, lighter, destroyed etc. that's thing that make me the most worries...lean over fat, etc. technical part if the oil painting !

Absolutely! I have some video that shows the more technical side of oil painting as well since there is a lot that goes into it, as you mentioned. I'm hoping to balance the creative and technical instructions to keep it from being overwhelming for a beginner, but it's all part of the craft 😄

Bill, did you use a photo to paint from or just create it as you went? I love it either way! My fav sunflowers, oh and old barns...

Hello! I often combine both approaches. I may use a reference photo as a starting point, but I'll also take creative liberties to add my own personal touch and style. The balance between reference and imagination allows me to create paintings that are both realistic and expressive.

    What medium do you use?

I primarily work with oil paints, as I enjoy the rich colors, blending capabilities, and versatility they offer. However, I also occasionally experiment with other mediums to keep more creativity in my work
