Papoose: "Facts, Lyrically Jay Z Is Not on My Level"

  • www.vladtv.com - Papoose spoke with VladTV about comments he made in a recent interview where he stated that he strongly believes that he is lyrically better than Jay Z. Pap went on to elaborate on those comments, and explained how there were many fans who agreed with him, while others debated his comments. He believes that if you take out the success levels that each rapper has achieved, and just compare their lyrical skills, then Pap confidently feels that it is a fact that Jay Z is not on his level.
    Pap went on to state that he doesn't think anyone in the game is better than him. He doesn't think it makes any sense to participate in such a competitive musical profession and actually admit to yourself that you aren't the best in the game.
    Do you think Papoose is better than Jay Z?

      But what you quoted were hot lines. Even if Jay wants to be iconic, He still has a good balance of incredible bars. Even when he stated " I'm just a hustler disguised as a rapper/ in fact you can't put this hustle inside of a wrapper/rapper" was still dope. I will admit that Jay got real lazy on his last album, but he dropped some real SHIT on that WE MADE IT track. He's not corny. He's actually one of the best to do it. Now 50 use to be insane with lyrics, but not anymore. I can see Pap saying that about Fifty, but not Jay.

Jay isn't using his full ability. Also at the end of the day who is on our minds more? Jay-Z or Papoose? Jay-Z has certified classics under his belt. What does Papoose have? I think Pap is just being bitter and throwing shots.

    • @playboyjla
      @playboyjla Před 10 lety +3

      That's a good explanation. However, is JAY Z not on Papoose's technical level because he can't be, or because he doesn't want to be. JAY Z loves power and money, so flowing the way Papoose does isn't going to give JAY what he ultimately wants. JAY is every bit as lyrical as Pap, but at this point, JAY Z just doesn't care to be overly technical. All he wants to do is make good songs that a ton of people will like. It's a business strategy.
      Personally, I think Papoose is ill, but just because he can flow doesn't mean he can make great songs. I totally get what you're saying though.

Jay'z got lyricism he just doesn't go all out and his focus is on being quotable...a Emcee is for Master of Ceremonies, it focuses on moving the crowd and if Jay Z can do it while rapping simply and he's still using flow, delivery, multi-syllabic rhyiming, punch-line, word play, etc, then I believe in most people's opinion I think Papoose is the one on a loosing battle...

      Nas only ever had 2 god albums in his whole career. NO doubt he is a legend and his rhyming ability is far superior to Jay but Jay is a more successful and more wealthy person. Nas lost me by the third album.

      @JohnSmith-wj7ge Před 8 lety +2

      But you can't say Jay doesn't have skills, even if you don't like the guy. Honestly I think Illmatic is on another level to everything Jay did, but if you stack up every other Nas album against any Jay album except Life and Times Vol 1, Jay's gonna win. Let's not forget that Nas took a lot from Tragedy too. Overall, Live at the BBQ, Nas's verse tops anything he ever did since and anything Jay ever did period.

    Jay Z is not on the level of Vanilla Ice lyrically. He sucks and always has. Papoose is a beast and always has been.

    • @mistahmst
      @mistahmst Před 10 lety +3

      Saying his worse than Vanilla Ice is just reaching. Jay-Z's newer stuff may not be that great, but he was a beast in his prime. Jay-Z did not always suck and he proves it on his albums like Reasonable Doubt, In My Lifetime, Vol.1, The Blueprint, half of The Blueprint 2, The Black Album, American Gangster, etc. Vanilla Ice has never made a song as good as Meet the Parents, D'Evils, Regrets, Can I Live, No Hook, Renegade, 99 Problems, and Where I'm From just to name a few. Whether you like him or not is your opinion, but you can't possibly say that Jay-Z sucks if you heard any of these songs. Papoose is nice and arguably better than Jay-Z lyrically, but he can't write a song to save his life.

    • @WarzoneResistance
      @WarzoneResistance Před 10 lety

      Dude I have heard many of the songs you mention and am not feeling ANY of them except 99 Problems and that is due to the Rick Rubin track behind him. I remember when Jay Z was beefing with Nas and looking like the sellout tool that he is. Fuck Jay Z and everyone down with him.

    • @mistahmst
      @mistahmst Před 10 lety +3

      Yes, Ether was a great diss, but it was mostly insults. Jay-Z hit him with facts on Takeover. While I didn't agree with some of his points and I do think Nas is better overall, you could tell he took his time with it and wanted to hit Nas where it hurt and it only took one verse. If you're not a fan, that's fine but to say someone's untalented is less subjective.

    • @WarzoneResistance
      @WarzoneResistance Před 10 lety

      Jay Z needs to retire to some island and never be heard from again. He is a clown of the highest order and got lucky to come out at the time he did. If he was just coming out now I am sure he would mimic some wack ass crap like Drake and get just as famous.

    • @mistahmst
      @mistahmst Před 10 lety

      It wasn't just luck. Sure, his music recently has been subpar to his standards and it seems like he hasn't been putting much effort, but that wasn't the case when he was in his prime. The reason he blew up was because he had the perfect balance. He was a great lyricist and a great songwriter and those two sometimes don't mesh very well.

And that's whats more important at the end of the day. i'm not even a fan the modern day jay-z, but when you look at his discography there's banger after banger. In other words, if you put a CD together of Jay-Z's greatest hits, and another CD with Papoose's greatest hits, which one would you stick with you more?... For me, Jay-Z hands down.

    As a big fan of Tupac, considering him one of the goats w/ major respect for his catalog and contributions to hip hop; to say that his lyrical depth is deeper then Jay Z is shade. All of the goats do something diff. for me, with pac it was his energy passion and emotion mixed with poetry. He never spit bars that I had to research, replay multiple times to comprehend or make the twisted face you do when hearing flawless lyricism. I get that with Jay (Old Jay at least). Jay and Big styles were very similar as well as Big Daddy Kane who they were both influenced by. So to put Kane n Big on the list as well as Pac and no Jay is shade to me, but everyone entitled to opinions.

      Hey Rod, you bring up some good points and I do agree with much of what you said. However, I think you can expand the category of lyrical depth a bit, and include Pac's poetic influence/style. While I agree that a lot of that was related to his passion and emotion, he also used sophisticated English techniques that many poets use. Things like Alliteration are constantly being used and although the lyrics are simplistic and don't make you rewind, the delivery is carefully crafted. "Picture Perfection Pursuing Paper with a Passion...". I'm not really a big poetry or English fan but I do appreciate the artistry that he approached many of his songs with. I'm not saying other artists don't have poetic style (Papoose surely does) but their songs likely aren't as packed with it, as Pac's were. I just thought I'd contribute that food for thought, as I think 2Pac is overrated on many levels but underrated in lyricism, considering many of his songs could be read as poems. "If I die tonight" by 2Pac is a great example of what I mentioned, very simple song but full of substance. One love all, peace.
