      Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. It's cool that it moves in a way which is efficient for a robot, rather than trying to perfectly mimic human movement.

Even if it was some metal that wasn’t effected by the heat. The liquid metal would damage or destroy plenty of internal components. Thermite turns into liquid iron. And it would mangle that thing.

    From a utility standpoint it’s probably useful that it can turn 360, imagine it moves boxes from one shelf to another behind and all it has to do is rotate instead of stepping around to turn. Presentation was hilarious, but its definitely a flex.

    The 360-degree articulation of its joints is impressive. To me, it's not unsettling at all. Envision the commercial, industrial, and eventual consumer applications for such a versatile robot. I believe there's no need for humanoid robots to be constrained by the same range of motion as humans.

    I think it's an excellent introduction. The robot does not need to move humanly, since it has such an extensive joint freedom. And the video demonstrates the wide range of motion. Just look at the complex motion being portrayed. It can get up by just the two legs, no arms needed. It can turn its head all around, which as we saw with Spot it can be very useful for monitoring. It can turn around without... turning around. If you focus on its hip segment, it's never shown to turn around. The legs rotate MID STRIDE, the torso rotates, the hips stay the same.
    It's an insane feat of mobility and robotics. If you put aside the uncanny valley, it's really perfect.

    Boston Dynamics is showing that they moved away from hydraulic actuators and managed to create a robot with electric motors, which are more flexible and controllable.
    On the goodbye video of the old version they showed a lot of cases where pumps and pipes were exploding and now they show the versatility of the new version, which can be more compact and dynamic.

    I think the fact that it is an omni robot makes it so much more versatile as you do not need to be facing any specific direction to complete tasks, it is a really smart move

      Also, no hydraulics that can rip or burst during operation. Provided a clean enough environment for the joints to not clog up (or appropriate protection of those parts) this may also prove more reliable in the long term.

      I just watched "Atlas" last night with J-Lo. Her name in and the movie name are both Atlas. The Robot she had to sync with to survive was "Smith" (Matrix?" ) in the movie her mother created a robot that bypassed all the other robots protection code and the robots murdered almost all humans in the planet. Plus the sync device she called a Neural-link!!!!!!

    Being able to rotate every joint 360 degrees makes it more practical for changing direction and maneuvering, instead of having the robot actually take a bunch of steps to walk in a circular motion.

They probably considered all the potential flaws when designing this robot over a span of multiple years.     The reasoning for 360 rotational joints is because that is a lot simpler and more efficient than taking more steps to turn around more like a human. The CEO made the point that just because it is humanoid doesn't mean it has to be limited to human-like movement

    It’s actually fascinating that robot learns to stand up and walk like that.
    Their joints don’t have the same limitations like ours. So that’s more efficient way to move around.

    That's not creepy at all, that's showing how versatile it is and is honestly quite the leap forward as previous models were hydraulics and now they've nailed that they're moving on towards electric motors which have greater motion and are less restrictive, so no I don't think it's creepy, I think it's quite fascinating.

      @@thecuberabbit286 The fact their robots do what they do without AI is a positive, not a negative. They have objectively more stable behavior and unbelievably fine-tuned control systems. This is hard to achieve with AI.

    It's easier to build/manufacture and easier to maintain. It is less complexity by eliminating limiters, but also makes it "better" than humans in many physical work usecases.
