Ma man found a digital caliper on steroids
I thought the same thing lol
Not on steroids, this digital ruler is way less functional than calipers. Calipers can also be used to measure internal diameter and depth. Neither of which can be done by this smart ruler.
@@octopusknivestrue, they serve slightly different use cases though, most callipers don’t open as far as that ruler and callipers can sometimes be finicky measuring length in general, would be neat to have both!
@@katiequark8882 I will admit that yes, the NeoRuler can the used in use cases that digital calipers can't (such as being used to draw lines), but it isn't due to the length. Digital calipers are readily available in 300mm lengths (only 30mm less than the NeoRuler) and are available longer. Longest I have found so far is 2 metres!
I just found out that HOZO Design sell an attachment for the NeoRuler called NeoCaliper. NeoCaliper doesn't have the depth probe/rod that pretty much every vernier, digital, and dial caliper has. The NeoRuler also doesn't have the resolution of most calipers. It has a resolution of 0.1mm, same as most typical rulers.
It might be to the nearest 0.1mm, but that means shit all when you have to eyeball the end position.

Jelly!? I thought that green stuff on Mrs Jenson’s bread was mold!
1) The measurement point looks to be thicker than 0.1mm, so the ruler cannot be more precise than that.
2) unless you are using an isometric map, measuring distance on a map will not yield accurate results. The larger the distance, the worse the answer will be.
Assuming this works like a caliper, does the point it's measuring from would be on one side not that whole thing.
Also, if you actually need that kind of precision, there are much cheaper tools that are much more precise
This ruler is just stupid. The precision is fake, the units can be changed using a basic calculator (is multiplying by some factor of 10), and the battery and the prize tag are just ridiculous. The only positive is the divisions, and it's not that hard to do manually.
And for point 2) an isometric map of a significant area is impossible to keep in constant units in X,Y space, so a linear ruler simply cannot derive an accurate distance

This is the sort of thing that would have been in Futurama episodes not long ago.

The tool you’re looking for is CALIPERS. They’ve been around for over a century, have at LEAST thousandth-of-an-inch/25 micrometer precision-often better-specialized gauges for reading measurements inside oddly shaped areas, and a locking mechanism so yo can physically transfer a measurement from one area to a workpiece. All for like $25 for a decent one, or $150 for an industry standard high-quality one.
Can confirm, especially when you’re measuring an object’s features like holes, protrusions, or cavities.
Oh wow, you know what calipers are. You must be so smart. I didn't realize calipers can do unit conversion and measure from points not starting at zero. Oh wait. They don't.
@@SixOThree And I didn’t realize you can’t think of other ways to achieve the same goal. Like locking the calipers on the measured distance and just transferring that distance over to the scale on a map. Or have a calculator app on your phone.
A normal ruler does have uses calipers don’t, as a convenient straightedge or to make multiple marks at different points along the same line, but the only features this ADDS don’t significantly improve those situations, just adds extra functions where a caliper or ruler + calculator, or ruler + compass, really would be better tools for the job, and does it for more expensive.
@@SixOThree Unit conversion… there’s a button on all of them to change units. For points that don’t start from 0, just move the calipers lmao, or zero them for whatever you want to not include if you’re too lazy to do basic subtraction.

Cool, but caliper is not really a ruler, and this ruler is not a caliper. Two different devices for different uses
@@prz98 hard disagree. All of the situations they show to demonstrate its advantages over an average ruler are situations where a pair of digital calipers would do the job even better. The only feature it has that most calipers *don’t* is the scale on a map thing, but there are techniques to do that VERY quickly with a drawing compass, calipers, or traditional ruler, and most folks already have a calculator handy in the form of their phone nowadays-ie it’s nice, but not a killer feature, and could easily be put in a pair of digital calipers to completely out-mode this if there was demand.
@@IONATVS overall purpose of calipers is to measure dimensions of objects, meanwhile ruler is mainly used for flat surfaces. Yes, compass, calipers and ruler can be used to measure the same length, but all have specialized purpose. Ruler is easier to draw technical plans with than with the calipers, but I’d rather use calipers to measure diagonal of pipes than ruler. Can be used interchangeably in some cases, but usually with worse results or requiring additional work. As I said before, two different tools with different purposes.
@@prz98 Oh, I’m aware that rulers have uses calipers don’t. But this product doesn’t IMPROVE any of them over a standard ruler. for technical drawings, an adjustable rule like this is honestly mostly counterproductive-the main purpose of the ruler in drafting is it’s STRAIGHTEDGE, not its RULE, and where you do use the rule, you should be measuring everything at the same, constant scale, and having to fiddle with it to change where it’s measuring from or too is a waste of time when you could be just making a quick tickmark mark at 1, 3, and 4.5 cm or the like. the fancy laser measurement thing is clearly for measuring objects, not flat paper, and just replicating the jaws of a caliper less precisely. A ruler is not a caliper, but THIS ruler is as expensive as a caliper, and mostly just lets an otherwise normal ruler also do some things calipers are used for, but worse.
