    That's not even a partial failure. It's actually a partial success... being able to play that small part of a song that complicated (even though it's not at its full speed), written by a guy like Henson, it's pretty impressive, to be honest.

      @@naegleriafowleri2230 in my opinion, when learning by tab you aren't actually "learning". Sure it gets you to a similar destination but knowledge comes from the process. I also high key hate tabs haha, hurts my eyes and feels like reading confusing ass books

      Tabs are good when first starting out, but learning by ear is very powerful once trained.
      That, and watching someones hands whilst they play!

      Nylon strings, type of guitar, pic use vs finger (yes a different sound is produced), bolero style training. I've been a guitarist for 5 years and can't match his tone and speed. Then again, I started on classical guitars.

    Omg it’s insane that she only took 2hours of practice and got the hang of it. She didn’t even have tabs or anything to help. She heard it and found the chords and repeated it. 😲 I’m awed with the talent both of you have.

      That's standard, TABs are mostly for beginners, you should be able to repeat the song by hearing it and experimenting.

    Tim's style is so unique. It's gonna take a lot of practice to nail his songs but in a different direction. Hardly anybody plays guitar in his style which is why even great guitarists like Sophie find it extremely tough to play Tim's parts. It's almost like playing a different instrument altogether

      Evryone is master in ther own sty i mean all the legends l its not only about tim .... Tim hav his own styl ,petrucci hav his own styl ,dimebag had his own styl etc etc......
      Sophie styl is also diffrnt so u find it hard at first try but thats nothing hard for you i can bet because no can master anyone styl in one day or few hours and also no one can play your styl in few hours if the genre is diffrnt it will obviously be hard 🔥

      i always played stuff sort of in that way , with way less technique and harmonics , and since i found polyphia i improved so much in guitar, im currently half way through this song , not their hardest except some parts, but i love that it’s on acoustic since acoustic is much harder than electric specially a classical with nylon strings

    Tim writes a lot of his riffs in a DAW and then learns the part afterward, that probably accounts for a lot of the unique feel he has when playing.

    I was learning this using his unplugged version at half speed, started getting the hang of it, was pretty happy, then I put the vid back to normal speed just to hear it again, and then I put my guitar away 😂

    i got recommended this video randomly, never seen your channel before. loved this vid so much, it’s incredibly impressive how you were able to learn this much in just 2 hours. you got a lot of it down on your 150 BPM attempt and i think you did really well on your lower BPM attempts as well.
    i love your monologuing throughout the video and your thought process while trying to learn this masterpiece of a song. great idea, great effort, great execution. liked and subbed

    I've had my Lava ME2, for a few years now, and I still love it's basic onboard effects, super playability, and incredible durability (for outside playing). Cool you're trying one out

    Tim is on a different level than most of his contemporaries. He plays so well and so different its mind bending. Playing God is an appropriate song name because you have too be a Godly player too both write and play this piece.

    This was a great video! It's so good to see a talented guitarist struggling at learning a song from ear. I find it so frustrating trying to learn stuff from ear and this really helped me. All you see on CZcams are perfect takes of extreme shredding, this video was real and that means so much.

    That became IMPRESSIVE at the very moment you started learning this riff WITHOUT TABS and got it right at (almost) every note. I was especiallysurprised about you getting right that harmonic part after C-major-sounding chord because for me that would be impossible. And you did it in 1,5 hours approx. whilst it took me 2 days! My sincere compliments on your skills!

    Found this video recommended after watching Tim's video and I gotta say, watching your improvement over the course of this video was so fun! When you played that section at 138 BMP it was really exciting, I was like "holy shit it sounds so on point!!" Great video!!

    This was in my feed. It was one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. Believe it or not you are an excellent teacher young lady. Far too many guitarists on CZcams are forever asking for tabs. Meanwhile the person is playing the song right in front of their collective f@ces. I prefer your approach to learning. Granted that guy is a monster player. I applaud you and think you’re an excellent guitarist.

    You're an excellent guitarist. This is one heck of a song to attempt. I have a tip for learning by ear. When you practice, sing every note you play. Start with scales. Once you build up that relation in your mind, if you can sing it you can play it. It takes years to master this technique (eapecially whem you start singing harmonies to what you're playing. ie: Gilmore), but you absolutely will see positive results in your ear training right away and eventually it makes learning by ear amazingly easy, not to mention how it will help your writing and improvisation. Keep on rockin 🤘🏼

    The harmonics which you were looking for at 5:24 are on the 19th fret and it sounds the same as the harmonics on the 7th fret but it's difficult to go back to 7th fret at that speed so he played it on the 19th. Love your content Sophie !

    a fun watch! having tried to play a few of tim's riffs, i feel like he has a foundation of techniques a little outside of the realm of 'traditional' electric guitar that are all pretty difficult or awkward, and because he's done them all so much they are effortless to him PLUS he weaves them all together seamlessly. the usual making it look easy thing.

    Actually, this is quite a normal situation like any instrument and any difficult piece you have to work your way through it... I’ve been playing the violin for 16 years and I have sometimes been working days and days on one or two minutes of a 40 minute long piece, without a full success 😂
    I think we just have to accept that there are a few things in our society where time needed is incompressible, and that’s right, because we must deserve it haha
    Anyway, your playing is great, you should definitely keep working on the piece! Have a very pleasant day

    Every guitar player is trying to learn this piece. It's actually very reassuring to watch an excellent guitar player struggle with it as much as I am. Instead of Lucas Brar playing along with it and then making it even harder.

    Tim is an awesome guitarist, but please don't forget Scottie LaPage who matches Tim but is almost never mentioned. The whole band is a mix of incredibly talented musicians, but Tim seems to get all the wow factor. Great job Sophie!! 2 hours to get where you are with it is amazing! I couldn't hope to get where you are in 2 years! :o) xx

    You did this by ear with no tab and managed to get that good at the first part in 2 hours...that's far from a partial failure, that's a huge success, as an experienced guitarist myself it took WAY MORE time for me to get to the speed and the sound that you got in 2 hours, you did great

    I really like this video as it shows how most of us will struggle to play by ear and there are those who are gifted (like TheDooo) who can pick up songs with one hearing. This video helps me to want to get back to practicing again. And... I wonder how long it would take TheDooo to get this song... you did a wonderful thing here in showing us to be patient and keep at it to get it done.

    I find that once I reach this point of hitting a wall, it is always easier after sleeping and letting my subconscious do whatever the eff it does to process it. It’s like your brain takes all the messy data you just shoved into it and then defragments it overnight.

    Sometimes I struggle playing my own music right... it sucks 😔
    And it's been a year since I began learning Sentient Glow by Periphery, and I still can't play it nicely up to speed, especially the middle section.
