Super nice to see you try this! As a classical guitarist I am way better at fingerpicking than at playing with a pick, and I can't stop myself from pointing out that you could try to pick more from the fingers and less from the hand as a whole. I see your hand make a little jump every time you pluck the i-m-a fingers, and you should aim for a steady hand that does not or barely move. This will make it easier to play with as little tension as possible, as well as more economical. so you can speed it up better. =)

Little tip for your thumb technique, your picking motion kind of moves away from the guitar as you downstroke, try keeping your thumb as absolutely relaxed as possible and bring it through the string with force from your wrist, this way when it lands on the next string it’s immediately in position for the upstroke

  • @manrat278

Defiantly a harder technique to learn. A few things I can recommend is buy the guitar messenger Tosin thump course, it’s amazing. Second, there’s a really good tutorial I found by ando San that breaks down the movement almost perfectly and that started me off so well with the technique. Also I noticed that you’re doing more of a slapping motion on the string instead of going through it like a pick, you are gonna want to get a little nail in there as well just to add more attack to the string. I enjoyed watching this, please do more.

I like to play with my fingers because I'm trying to play solo and sing, makes it easier for me to put emphasis on the bass when needed when strumming chords, makes it sound more dynamic and easier to throw some single note shenanigans on the middle. But I can't metal so for me the stuff like sweep picking or playing fast is like "that is not possible, must be sped up".
There's so much to learn about playing guitar it's overwhelming sometimes, also it's pretty cool to know that there's always more stuff to learn no matter how long you train!

If you want to get deep into the thump technique listen to brazillian guitarist(acoustic) post baden powel, such as raphael rabello and yamandu costa, the sound is very much part of modern samba and brazillian guitar since baden made it popular about 50 years ago

Could replace with slap on the downstream and a slap release on the upstroke(similar technique) then pop with the index mid and ring for a mo funky approach.

It's fun to see someone who is good at guitar be confused and bewildered by guitar instructions from some one better at guitar than them the same way i am when i watch a basic ass guitar instruction tutorial as a beginner/novice. I can relate to all of it haha

Try lightly “hooking” every finger besides thumb, under each corresponding string adding slight tension as if there’s a rubber band on your thumb pulling your other fingers. Once the thumb hits its 2nd note, imagine the rubber band slowly snapping and each finger pulls its corresponding string in order

    lolo fun
a good sense of motion to apply to your thumb when thumping is you are sort of slivering your thumb, resting it on the next string and then reversing the movment avoiding to touch your nail with the string because it gives off another sound :D
this technique originates from bass playing! thank mr wooten for that

I tried to learn how to thump a couple months ago and gave up because it was just too difficult lmao. Glad to know that even with 18 years of playing experience, Nik is going through the same thing. I guess I'll have to try again.
