One of the best things about playing guitar is discovering new players that you can learn something from. I've been playing for over 20 years, and the best advice I think I could ever give any young players reading this is to never worry or think about how good you are compared to other players. Have fun with it. Get creative. Don't worry so much about speed. Think about melody, and let speed compliment it. You do not have to be blazing fast to be considered good. Be as good as YOU can be. Play things YOU love. Trust me.

If you can't understand the detail and depth of his stories, not to mention how strangely unique they are, you likely aren't very talented or skilled in the guitar, while also not noticing his general intellect. Considering he says "like" 18000 times in this interview and I still made it through, is impossible in itself.

You can tell over the last year that Tim's grown a lot more comfortable in front of the camera. A lot of people seemed off put by his demeanor in the last one, but to me it just struck me as nerves. Now it's like he's completely at home. We've literally watched him grow up, so it's necessary to take that into account.

Man, Tim is a really surprising guy. He seems to be growing as an artist and person yet remains humble, open and driven. And the camaraderie is incredible, reminds me of the days when Rhett would tend to hangout. One can see a deep friendship, these conversations could not happen otherwise. Tim is making history and enjoying the process. Sure is inspiring, though I'll say his music comes from areas way outside of my comfort zone but like LoI Armstrong said, there's two types of music: good and bad. Well Tim is certainly entrenched in the first category.
Humble? Really? He just went "I want you to make me this guitar, or else I'll make it somewhere else" on Ibanez's ass, and I'm still dumbfounded how the japanese complied, I guess money talks.
@@JohnWiku I see nothing wrong with that. Ibanez had already closed that door; that sounds more like a negotiation backed by determination rather than mere ego. Ibanez is a huge beast if he tiptoed they would have ignored him. At least to me it sounds like an artist asking for a brush saying that it would be great to be able to buy them there rather than having to look for it, after all they used to make it. But to fulfill it's patrons that brush was absolutely required and would go where needed should they were not in a position to fulfill the request. After all, one of the biggest differences I see between professionals and amateurs is the stakes. Your bank account is separate from your audience and being unable to fulfill their requests doesn't put ones own livelihood at risk.
Tim has a ton of humility, which shows how intelligent as a human being he is, incredible seeing him describe the whole creative process and trial-error involved in it.
its great to see Tim getting more comfortable in interviews. i remember rewatching when he was on Herman Li's Jason Becker charity stream and he was sort of playing a lot while he was talking and stuttering quite a lot so seeing him now where he's really confident in what he says and seeming like he's just having any other conversation is rly nice to see :)
I like that Tim is maturing and putting behind the fictional persona from earlier phase of his career. Some artists never grow out of that fake persona in front of the public, and not that there's anything wrong with it, since they have their reasons for keeping it going (privacy, separating their public facing life from personal life, social anxiety, marketing gimmick, etc.) But this Tim is much more relatable and personable.

Yeah, the great thing is that they are generationally apart, but Rick respects newer generation talent and Tim respects what the older generation brought. They speak a common musical language and they both get production so it's another layer of mutual appreciation.
He's seems like a great kid. It's just another thing I admire about him. He mentioned Vulfpeck. Polyphia and Vulfpeck are two great examples of how hard work and drive will pay off.

Polyphia is not the sort of music i usually listen to but i just respect them so damn much i cant help but put them on sometimes and just sit there in awe
I'll be honest, I listen to it and it sounds pointless. Like someone threw up a bunch of musical notes and it just splattered all over the floor. It's just not very musical. The technique and speed they use is impressive though.

The guys called it "the ticktok era" during the interview re: going viral, promotion, etc. I'm always really interested seeing how artists think about the technical parts of making music and the weird parts of marketing and the business.
I have to say incredibly impressed with Tim's perspective and understanding. For someone not yet 30 he shows a real deep respect for the art and the arena he is in. You don't see enough of that these days. Rare to see humility, passion and clear empathy in someone. Good on ya Tim glad to be around to listen to your adventures in sound.
I'm getting up there in age, turned 40 this year, and I have to say was looking for YEARS to hear someone from the new generation to really take the guitar and show us old guys what we forgot to try. I'm so glad I was turned onto Tim by one of my students. Makes me very happy for the future of guitar. And its REALLY great that he always seems like such a nice person; he's confident but not arrogant, eclectic and thoughtful. Great interview Rick.
Tim is getting used to interview. Back in the days he said that “I play guitar coz I can’t talk”. But dude, not only the music but also Tim himself are becoming more mature and inspirational as we all can see now. My guitar hero!
He's still a bit awkward and weird, but that is perfectly fine. I wish my brain and fingers could do 10% of what he can do, but he still seems so humble.
Jazz chords played very fast , its all well and good banging away at light speed but no one cares unless you can put words to the music , hence why Ed Sheeran and Stormzy are better musicians they understand the kids on the street , Tim comes across to me as an upper class spoiled kid who had mummy and daddy pay tuition for his life lol
Tim doesn't appear to have the ego that a lot of young-ish musicians have. He comes across as being just so genuine. I am an old guy but i really like this young man. I also think he so appreciates Rick's experience in the industry and the knowledge he brings to the conversation. Of course, Rick is the spark that ignites a great interview. Totally enjoyed this chat.
It really makes me appreciate his talent even more. All of the band comes across this way. They’re all insanely talented musicians, but in interviews they feel so humble and down to earth.
The fact that the band had to grind super hard and tour in a crappy van for years and literally make no money, may be the the genesis to their humility.

Godin guitars in Canada have been making amazing electric nylons very similar to this for over 10 years, called the Multiac. (Also available in steel string).

The fact that he said he is wanting to expand his bag of tricks and get better so he knows exactly when to do certain things is just insane to me. You would think that a guy of his level would already feel like they've gotten to that point, but I guess that's what makes him a great player is that he just wants to keep getting better.
I'm continually impressed by Tim, both as a guitar player and as a person. Him and Polyphia have blown up and it really seems like he's kept his feet on the ground, intensely focused on improving his craft. Not only is it rare for music like this to be gaining so much traction, but it's rare for artists at this level to keep their head on their shoulders. I gain more confidence with every interview I see that he's successfully navigating fame's pitfalls. That's inspiring on its own.

I remember when i heard queen for the first time i was amazed and said to myself…this band is the best I’ve heard…..well, happened the same the first time i heard polyphia. This guys are amazing. Music that will transcend time. Tim is one of the best guitar players of all times.
First time I heard his playing, I immediately thought it sounds like what electronic producers do with melodyne, chopping and shifting to create elaborate patterns. Then heard that is how he does it, first working it in the DAW by hand, then figuring how to perform it. Makes sense.
Tim is a bad ass guitar player and songwriter. I’m 47 and love his music and playing style. I’ll never be able to play like him, but I sure like watching him and his band. It’s good to see real music.
This was a cool, and insightful interview. I first heard Polyphia around 2013. I was impressed that guys that were that young were playing that type of music. I'm still impressed, they did some extremely cool and stuff on this last album. Great interview Rick.
What I admire is, that Tim is a great performer (and so are all the other guys at Polyphia) and also a great composer. Composition is a completely different process than performance. To see him using a whole heck of techniques to get to a composition and then learn the stuff to play it actually on guitar is just on a different level.

Yeah, the great thing is that they are generationally apart, but Rick respects newer generation talent and Tim respects what the older generation brought. They speak a common musical language and they both get production so it's another layer of mutual appreciation.

I'll be honest, I listen to it and it sounds pointless. Like someone threw up a bunch of musical notes and it just splattered all over the floor. It's just not very musical. The technique and speed they use is impressive though.

The guys called it "the ticktok era" during the interview re: going viral, promotion, etc. I'm always really interested seeing how artists think about the technical parts of making music and the weird parts of marketing and the business.
I have to say incredibly impressed with Tim's perspective and understanding. For someone not yet 30 he shows a real deep respect for the art and the arena he is in. You don't see enough of that these days. Rare to see humility, passion and clear empathy in someone. Good on ya Tim glad to be around to listen to your adventures in sound.
I'm getting up there in age, turned 40 this year, and I have to say was looking for YEARS to hear someone from the new generation to really take the guitar and show us old guys what we forgot to try. I'm so glad I was turned onto Tim by one of my students. Makes me very happy for the future of guitar. And its REALLY great that he always seems like such a nice person; he's confident but not arrogant, eclectic and thoughtful. Great interview Rick.
Tim is getting used to interview. Back in the days he said that “I play guitar coz I can’t talk”. But dude, not only the music but also Tim himself are becoming more mature and inspirational as we all can see now. My guitar hero!
He's still a bit awkward and weird, but that is perfectly fine. I wish my brain and fingers could do 10% of what he can do, but he still seems so humble.

Tim doesn't appear to have the ego that a lot of young-ish musicians have. He comes across as being just so genuine. I am an old guy but i really like this young man. I also think he so appreciates Rick's experience in the industry and the knowledge he brings to the conversation. Of course, Rick is the spark that ignites a great interview. Totally enjoyed this chat.
It really makes me appreciate his talent even more.
All of the band comes across this way. They’re all insanely talented musicians, but in interviews they feel so humble and down to earth.
The fact that the band had to grind super hard and tour in a crappy van for years and literally make no money, may be the the genesis to their humility.
This was the most sincere and thoughtful interview from Tim yet and I loved it. Great stuff, guys.

Godin guitars in Canada have been making amazing electric nylons very similar to this for over 10 years, called the Multiac. (Also available in steel string).
Even before Godin, Gibson made the Chet Atkins CE from 1981-95. I guess the "CE" stood for Classical Electric. Too bad I sold mine many years ago.
Cordoba has their stage nylon and it’s pretty much the same vibe. Runs about $699 so I put one on layaway last week. Can’t wait to get it home.

I just love hearing Tim play, really cool stuff. I love that he has an open mind to explore so much more that is out there in music.
The fact that he said he is wanting to expand his bag of tricks and get better so he knows exactly when to do certain things is just insane to me. You would think that a guy of his level would already feel like they've gotten to that point, but I guess that's what makes him a great player is that he just wants to keep getting better.

I'm continually impressed by Tim, both as a guitar player and as a person. Him and Polyphia have blown up and it really seems like he's kept his feet on the ground, intensely focused on improving his craft. Not only is it rare for music like this to be gaining so much traction, but it's rare for artists at this level to keep their head on their shoulders. I gain more confidence with every interview I see that he's successfully navigating fame's pitfalls. That's inspiring on its own.
I saw Polyphia in 2015 16 in Detroit opening for a band....it was my first time hearing them..I'm still blown away by them

Anyway, I really love this interview. I just discovered Polyphia for the first time, and Tim is now my favourite guitarist, so it was really cool to listen to him talk about his passion. Even if I don’t understand most of it (not a guitarist or an instrumentalist at all, unfortunately… no opportunity or money…), I still really love to hear it. Keep it up. Love these up close interviews with musicians about their craft where you guys just geek out together. It’s amazing.
And man… that Chino track is sick… all of Polyphia’s music is amazing so far, but I was wondering how vocals would sit with it. Couldn’t be happier with a result like that. It was intense.

This nylon guitar is so awesome. I really appreciate how affordable it is in comparison to the prices that custom guitars usually sell for. It's an advancement in nylon guitars - probably breaths some new life into this classic guitar type.

I remember when i heard queen for the first time i was amazed and said to myself…this band is the best I’ve heard…..well, happened the same the first time i heard polyphia. This guys are amazing. Music that will transcend time. Tim is one of the best guitar players of all times.

First time I heard his playing, I immediately thought it sounds like what electronic producers do with melodyne, chopping and shifting to create elaborate patterns. Then heard that is how he does it, first working it in the DAW by hand, then figuring how to perform it. Makes sense.

This was a cool, and insightful interview. I first heard Polyphia around 2013. I was impressed that guys that were that young were playing that type of music.

What I admire is, that Tim is a great performer (and so are all the other guys at Polyphia) and also a great composer. Composition is a completely different process than performance. To see him using a whole heck of techniques to get to a composition and then learn the stuff to play it actually on guitar is just on a different level.

Their music is not particularly innovative. They are great performers but it’s surprisingly boring to hear the same shredding stuff every 5 seconds.
