For as long as he’s been making music, Kendrick Lamar has been trying to open minds. But Kendrick Lamar is NOT a role model. On his third studio album “To Pimp a Butterfly”, Kendrick became something of a Liberal champion, but the truth is that -- just like the rest of us -- Kendrick is a deeply flawed individual whose been trying to tell us that the entire time. Sure, he’s a Pulitzer Prize winner. Sold more than 17 Million albums worldwide. Been nominated for 33 Grammys. Won 13. His music is even archived in the library at Harvard University and he’s been described as the poet-laureate of hip-hop -- an innovative storyteller whose work has been compared to that of classic novelists like James Joyce and James Baldwin. But here’s the thing - since becoming the biggest name in all of rap music with the release of “DAMN” in 2017, Kendrick Lamar has been going through something. Maybe a lot of things. And for anyone who knows anything about his past, it’s entirely understandable. After all, you don’t just get over being shot at or watching your friends die as a child. Now -- with his return from a nearly 4-year long hiatus and the release of his fifth studio album, “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers”, Kendrick has seemingly finally accepted that he can’t solve the world’s problems. Hell, he might not even be able to solve his own.

I’m a hip hop fan from the 90’s but Kendrick is the one that kept me listening to current hip hop . He is clearly the best of his generation but he’s more than that now. Kendrick Lamar‘s name belongs up there with the grades like 2pac, Ice Cube, Biggie , Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Nas, LL Cool J, etc. Yes being a dope lyricist is important and I would never say it’s not and there are a lot of really dope lyricist out there that are true emcees but there’s also just making great timeless music too and not everyone that’s a great technical rapper can keep on making great music and keep a loyal fan base throughout time. That’s why Kendrick Lamar deserves to be up with those other greats. He’s been out for over a decade now and the current generation still listens to him, the two previous generations listen and respect him, and he’s still putting out albums that are dropping at number one all over the globe. We aren’t having the same discussions about him that we were having eight years ago when we were talking about how good will he be and will he be a legend. Fuck that , dude is a legend.

I consider Kendrick to be a poet. He uses hip hop to convey his poetry and he does it better than anyone. His albums are literal art. His albums may not be what I usually want to listen to while I’m out driving around but they are what I listen to when I’m alone. No other rappers besides maybe pac and J Cole have had that effect on me.
