  • September 20, 2023 - A panel of experts unpacks China’s major proposal on the “reform and development of global governance” and discusses how its government seeks to advance these ideas internationally. Speakers include Courtney Fung, scholar in residence at Asia Society Australia and associate professor at Macquarie University: and Taylah Bland, Schwarzman fellow at Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis. Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Executive Director Bates Gill moderated the discussion. (54 min., 21 sec.)

This opening speach by this young lady is without a doubt an expretion
Of fear of and disapproval of Chinas'
Progress and wealth. China is a peaceful & helpful country and is a leading force for all the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere is presenting with a haulting approach to China with a suggestion of jealous envy.

@martthajones madame yes don’t forget the Chinese help in making small countries into debt trap. There is no peace inside China, the people of China are modern slaves of the 21st century. After Xi‘s third term as ruler of China things are going backwards to the days of the Mao’s Cultural Revolution and Red Guards. Who are Chinese friends today? Nord Korea, Russia, Pakistan, Iran all Dictaors! China has problem with all its 9 neighbouring countries. If China help you becareful they will take something in return.

@@Bhoetukwho are China's friends? 156 members of the BRI, 11 BRICS members, etc. Dare you to Google debt trap diplomacy. It's long been debunked that China initiates debt trap diplomacy. World experience shows the USA initates debt trap loans through the World Bank, IMF and the Paris Lenders Club. Nobody wants the American Protection Racket anymore. When USA proposes a loan that is only protection or security it doesn't help a country in the Global South to prosper. What helps is infrastructure, like a sea port, a railway, an air port, a energy plant or something helpful. Not a US military base. Not a aircraft carrier patrolling offshore. And certainly not a bunch of missiles.

LOL, here we go again with the "Western led rules based order". Please, Asia Society, link to this rule book and particularly what the rules say about the subjects mentioned including data security, climate change, etc. Or just stop. This is reducing your argument to self-parody. By the way, the "International" community you speak of seems to be a small minority of the G7 and thus is exactly the problem.

Not to devalue many of the good points raised in this talk, I'd like to offer some broad criticism. It is disappointing that the Asia Society, that used to include a greater diversity of ideas and was often a source of excellent debate on Asia related issues, has declined in the diversity of it's contributors and largely retreated to defending Western positions in an unreflective and uncritical way. Particularly on subjects regarding China, the Society no longer engages Chinese people and relies entirely on Western "China Experts" and a few token expat Chinese "faces" who inevitably mirror Western positions to provide an imprint of legitimacy on the positions. Totally absent from the discussion were any Chinese speakers that the Society could have invited but did not. This is unfortunate. I hope to see the Asia Society do better.

Interesting the use of "instrumentalize" to draw suspicions on the very positive proposals of China. It seems a term which could be more fruitfully applied to the US in regards to democracy, freedom, and human rights. It reveals the deep bias and poverty of analysis of these participants. The large number of critical commentaries written by people who do not swallow this standard hypocritical Western discourse is encouraging.
