    I love that he calls it a false happy ending, because the moment the film ended I was like - “oh, she’s going to recover by focusing on self-love, like that woman told her!”
    But, the more I thought about it, the more I realized - she’s one step away from becoming Lester.

      How, Rebecca? I want to hear. I've seen/heard at least 2 other people who said that Safe changed their life, and I want to know if it's really that special to them, as it is to me. There are other great movies around that make people worship: from Citizen Kane to The Tree of Life, but I don't think any other film impact my moral/political view the same way Safe did. It's a different level.

      This movie had a great impact on me as well. I can't say it has changed my life, but yet. The funniest thing is that to me Safe is both scary and nostalgically warm. It sounds weird, but it reminds me of my childhood and those great mystical TV shows of the 90s like 'Eerie, Indiana'

Now, Cooper probably deserved that award in 1999 for “American Beauty”. But for the life of me I can’t even remember his performance in “Adaptation” whereas I have never, ever forgotten how sublime Quaid was in “Far From Heaven”. What does the Academy know anyway? Adam Sandler gave one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in “Uncut Gems” and he wasn’t nominated either.

    • @patches3
      @patches3 Před 2 lety +9

      yes, loving oneself is utterly important. But in the context of the film (and as they talked about the film having a "fake" happy ending) it seems to be more nuanced than simply succumbing to wellness culture and expecting that loving yourself is the answer to the modern, western, fast-paced living.
      It certainly is a great film that leaves you with a lot to think about

    • @ether4211
      @ether4211 Před 2 lety +2

      i have MCS and only heard of this film yesterday...the ending is pretty spot on in that people with MCS end up alone with no cure, no treatment and for years government studies into MCS is that 'its a real condition, not in peoples heads but we don't know why?..more science is required to figure out why these people get sick and until then there's no known cure or treatment outside of avoidance and mental health support'. I was diagnosed last year after going from happy/healthy to in a ambulance unable to breath within a week. I was like Carol in that I knew something was wrong but it took months to figure out the trigger was a new product at work and another 5 months before a doctor diagnosed me with 'classic MCS'. I would have preferred a cancer diagnosis as people understand cancer and feel sympathetic and you either die or get cured. MCS is a worse case diagnosis..there's no cure.. you can hope to manage the condition but many suffers don't get help in time and end up in situations like Carol or worse where there is no safe place for them because chemicals are everywhere and as you get more sick it can spread to more and more things - worse cases are even allergic to electronics and can't be around wifi signals or mobile phones. What the film doesn't mention is that the recovery for MCS is 2-25 years if your lucky and the only choice is either risk getting worse or disappear entirely from society into a bubble never to be heard from again. One of the nastiest things is it effects your ability to think, reason, concentrate and both chemicals themselves and the stress of chronic illness can have a devastating impact on your mental health...so self care is important, but its nothing without taking action to raise the concerns of people with MCS and push for change and actual science and solutions.

    Is Safe a good starting point for Haynes movies? (I've seen plenty with Julianne Moore, one of my favorite actresses.)

    • @LeopoldStotch23
      @LeopoldStotch23 Před 9 lety +14

      Hmmm, hard to say. Haynes 'vibe' is different with each film. Simplified:
      Safe is Haynes' most Lynch-ian film; dark with dark humor and some oddball visuals, the dark side of suburbia.
      Velvet Goldmine is about a close to a Glam Era Iggy Pop/David Bowie made for tv movie (with a bit of a 'whodunnit' thrown in) as you're going to get.
      Far From Heaven could easily be a rogue Mad Men episode.
      The Karen Carpenter Story, if you can ever get your hands on it, is pure camp. All done with Barbie Dolls
      Poison is a mixed bag of genres.
      Can't really comment on I'm Not There. I personally can't stand Bob Dylan, however friends who watched it loved it. It's somewhat experimental in that he has different actors playing the role of Dylan, including Cate Blanchett.
      I'd say jump in on either Safe, Velvet or Far From Heaven, that said they are all different experiences from each other. Personally I'm huge fan of Safe because of the reasons described above and Velvet is a close second cause I'm a big fan of 70s glam rock.
      Hope that helps!

    On the dvd commentary with Haynes/Moore/Vachon early on it is remarked that Moore had never seen the final cut at that point (commentary recorded 2000, I believe), and near the end Haynes seems to gently call Moore on not attending any of the premieres, including Cannes. Did Moore disown this movie originally or something? I think it's fair to say it made her career and put her on the radar of directors like Anderson.

    It's an interesting film Hayes has made but one film that neither the director or the actress mention as inspiration is '57's The Incredible Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson and Jack Arnold.
    Right from the opening scene when Moore's character gets covered in black smoke from a large truck in front of her car I immediately saw the connection.
    One may consider SAFE a loose remake although Moore's "shrinking" is obviously more metaphoric than literal.
    But the alienation is there in both films.

      It's not Satire its based on real people and a real condition. Go rewatch the allergy testing scene and the one where she collapses and is hospitalized. As someone who was actually diagnosed with MCS I started in a Ambulance and it took 5 months from not being able to breath to figuring out the cause was a chemical and finally getting a diagnosis. Unlike Carol I intentionally avoided support groups and psudoscience while i had people around me telling me it was all in my head even though my doctors and test results were that something was obviously wrong to the point where my GP said I had 5 minutes to call a ambulance if certain symptoms appeared. Rewatch and think how you'd feel if it was the cleaner or the drycleaner or you who got sick vs a yuppy.
