6 Films That Influenced Todd Haynes' May December

Will absolutely watch any other movie the father of Carol makes
Can’t recommend Safe enough - one of his earliest films and (I believe?) his first collaboration with Julianne Moore. One of her best performances, still to this day. I slept on it for a few years, and I would recommend watching it as soon as you can.

Carol was one of the films that made me decide I wanted to pursue my passion for filmmaking. Todd Haynes is a masterful director and storyteller and I cannot wait to see May December.

Bravo for recognizing the brilliance of Michel Legrand's score for THE GO-BETWEEN. So many reviews criticize it, but it's one of many striking qualities of that Joseph Losey film. I'll be looking for MAY DECEMBER because Todd Haynes always makes interesting movies.
It makes me so happy that Hanyes recognizes both Sunset Blvd. & Persona. I think both are 2 of the greatest and most influential films of all time, but for May December, Persona feels so powerful & inspiring to Haynes vision.
I also love that he recognizes Bergman’s Face to Face, which was the only Ingmar Bergmanfilm Liv Ullman was ever nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for. The psychological nature of that film, and most of Bergman’s films, is so mesmerizing and tantalizing. Even the horrors of the stories, you don’t and can’t look away from, which I feel is a massive theme and motive and motif of May December.
And despite his reputation, Allen’s Manhattan makes so much sense as an inspiration. Not only the young/underaged element and the judgement the characters experience & defy, but, going back to persona, Allen has always admitted to be heavily influenced by Ingmar Bergman and his films (examples like Interiors and September feel this way especially.) Even in Annie Hall, Diane Keaton & Woody Allen’s characters go to see a Bergman film and debate & argue how they like and saw the film.
Haynes is one of my favourite directors i saw May December at the New Zealand festival back in July and i can see the Persona comparision. I cant wait to see this again when it hits netflix
I remember Todd Haynes and his excellent film ' Poison. ' Those were the days and I thought they would never end.

This movie was so good. I really enjoyed it. He talked about some of this at the Q&A that I saw, but I had trouble focusing on this video because all I could think about was how much I want to watch that movie again. I think it might be my favorite movie of his.
from what ive heard it wasnt really an influence on the movie but may december has the same vibe as twin peaks to me. a campiness masking something really horrific and beyond that even musically they felt somewhat similar to me. surprised i havent seen anybody else say the same
yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!omggg!!! as soon as I heard the musical score, I IMMEDIATELY thought of twin peaks! even the cinematography and the lighting?? and the underlying very very disturbing secret that Charles Melton embodied SO fantastically. it was VERY twin peaks. literally just wrote this in my letterboxd review. crazy.

Bro I forget Todd is literally the same age now as Alfred Hitchcock was during the making of Psycho. He seems just so youthful and full of life and inspiration. Not that Hitch wasn;t full of inspiration but Todd looks so great for his age it's hard to believe he's in his early 60s.
Semi-shocked that Haynes had forgotten “The Go-Between.”
I check every month in hopes that Criterion is finally releasing it on DVD and/or Blu-Ray.
I'm a huge Joseph Losey fan, but tbh, The Go-Between, kind of forgettable, I'm kind of surprised it won the Palm
May December owes a great deal to Pedro Almodovar, so it's interesting to see him go unmentioned.
This is an incredible thing what letterboxd is doing. I have always wanted movie suggestions from directors on what to watch before / after watching their movie in a way - this helps us understand the movie or the director's thought process, intentions better and letterboxd doing films that inspired director to make this movie. love oyou letterboxd, i hate your app feature to create lists. that is something you could work n

i saw persona and may december both for the first time just less than 2 days apart, coincidentally. Both incredible movies.
I know of the phrase May to December (but not the proper meaning - I'll have to look it up) because of a BBC sitcom from the late 80s/early 90s about the relationship between an older man (53 at the start of the show) & a younger woman (who is 26). Can only vaguely remember what it was like so i don't know if it'd pass muster now.
For a second there I saw the thumbnail and thought: is Jamie Lee Curtis promoting which film?

It shocks me Netflix can produce a pile of HOT GARBAGE like Maestro and also this subtle masterpiece.
Theres another way in which Manhattan inspired this film…
i'm gonna be honest, the Go-Between is not that great. the music might be good on its own, but i didn't enjoy it at all in the context of the movie.
