I know it's a bit ridiculous answering a 6-year-old question, but as an Irishwoman myself, PLEASE come at any time of year OTHER than St. Patrick's Day, and PLEASE don't only visit the cities! The cities are great, sure, but if you want the real traditional Irish craic, it's a road trip you want. Some of the smallest towns in Ireland can have the greatest night life. I'd recommend coming here no earlier than April (you'll be guaranteed rotten weather otherwise) and staying for at least 2 weeks to absorb as much as you can - even then, even if you go the right way about it and cram your schedule, you should still be left wanting more! I'm from Westmeath myself, but from what I've heard, these are the 10 best places around the country to check out, in no particular order: 10. Dublin City (of course!). I actually recommend steering clear of Temple Bar, it's gone way too touristy and they only know how to play the same 20 songs every night, and the atmosphere is nothing like what you see here - it's mostly just skangers trying to steal your wallet anyways. Hold off on the night life until you get to the other places on the list. 9. Galway City - a better option for night life than Dublin (definitely safer!) but the history there might be more to your liking. 8. Cork City - especially if you're interested in delving deeper into the history of the fight for Irish independence. Cork isn't called "The Rebel County" for nothing! 7. Johnny Fox's Pub at the top of the Dublin Mountains. Great place for music and an Irish customary dinner of Colcannon - potatoes mashed together with scallions! Yummy! If you're the other side of the island, definitely check out Westport for its history with Granuaile, the Irish Pirate Queen! 6. Back to mountains, Carantouhill/Croke Patrick/Mt. Errigal (but only if you really like climbing!) 5. Na Gaeltachtaí - the last native-Irish speaking communities left in Ireland. The best I've visited have been Carraroe in Connemara, or else Dunlewey in Co. Donegal (not far from Mt. Errigal if you're there anyways!). You don't have to be fluent, as everyone there speaks at least _good_ English - just try to make the effort with the odd "Dia duit!" whenever you can! 4. Westmeath (am a bit biased here, haha!). The legend of the Children of Lir at Lough Derravaragh (one of the lakes) is truly a fascinating read, you can get it online for free I'm sure. The Hill of Uisneach is a great ancient Celtic site nearby, it's only 12 miles west of Mullingar, hometown of Niall Horan of One Direction fame, and none other than Joe Dolan himself, who has a statue outside the Tourist Office! Great town for music/night life, when not in lockdown obviously! The Mullingar Arts Centre has some amazing plays and musicals on frequently, once they're allowed to open! 3. Sligo Town, hometown of W.B. Yeats. Full of history, I mean FULL of it. You can visit the theatre where some of the most influential Irish plays were first performed as early as the 1880s. There is also the Yeats Library which is another fantastic cultural stop on your journey! 2. Brú na Bóinne in Co. Meath, where of course you'll find Newgrange, Knowth, Dowth, the Hill of Tara, and a few miles down the road, Loughcrew! I will suggest that you stay two or three days here, just to take it all in! Also you may be interested in returning to these mesolithic chambers on your next visit, if you're lucky enough to get tickets to the Newgrange Winter Solstice annual event. Watching the chamber light up with the sunrise is a magical experience you'll never forget. 1. Dingle, for its pubs, whalewatching, surfing and gin! Or, if you're a fan of cider, I highly recommend Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, where both Bulmer's and Orchard Thieves are made. Alternatively, after you've finished your visit to the Guiness brewery in Dublin City, you may be interested in the life of Arthur Guiness, who I will tell you now was born in my very own hometown of Celbridge in Co. Kildare - you can get a lovely photo op with his statue in the main street of Celbridge! If you're more into the whiskey, the Kilbeggan distillery, and the Tullamore distillery (where Tullamore DEW is made) are excellent locations. The Jameson or Bushmills distilleries down in Cork are great if you can stomach them! We Irish are famous for our drink, so I was obliged to include a few options! ☘☘☘ Lord knows when the country will open up again, Ireland seems to have the longest lockdowns anywhere on the planet right now (which is why I'm here, to get a taste of freedom!) but I hope these tips serve to aid those who are curious about a visit to Ireland! Went here end of May 2020. Great time. Watch out for Dingle’s very high curbs on the waterfront after coming out of the pubs.
