Finished this game and I just can't stop thinking about it. That's a sign of a good story, makes you THINK. I just want more of it.
play penumbra
@@coffin7904
Penumbra is underrated in my opinion. I like that game actually
I played it in late 2018 and ran out of ps plus in feb 2019 and I just bought a year of ps plus and I’m playing it now it’s kinda scary
Alan wake is next for you it’s an awesome game
Might give it a try.
I loved SOMA. I don't usually play these types of games but I loved the Philosophical questions of humanity and consciousness and how precious being human is.
amazing game and the graphics are excellent realy atmospheric
I don't think being human is "precious" per se. There's honestly not much to it, than what we know. But, yes, this game was fantastic!
Yeah the game is the best and we are no precious
I'd much prefer horror games with a great story than one with cheap jumpscares. Jumpscares are intense, yes, but they only last for a few seconds while a really disturbing story can fuck you up in your sleep for weeks to come.
+Rafael Villanueva (This comment contains significant spoilers) Which wasn't the case. The story is, in my opinion amazing, but not horrifying, it's not that big of a thing that humanity has gone extinct and now only exists in a computer simulation. Still an amazing game and worth all the money I've given to it. Also the monsters would be scarier if they wouldn't just knock you out, wtf were they thinking?
+Rafael Villanueva Yeah, Someone being tortured for decades on end is scary as shit, and can give you nightmares. Jumpscares of a dead dude only last a few seconds or maybe a minuite or two.
if you want a good story, then go read a book.
+Daniel Lindberg there are things a game's narrative can do that simply wont work with a book, because you as the player are far more invested in the main character's struggles because you perceive them as "your" struggles.
+Daniel Lindberg games>books and movies. you want mindless shooting, play cod and leave the industry as it is.
The true horror is behind the philosophy of this game...
ThePumpkinHead what do you mean what’s going on
LORD OSA I think they mean the question of what counts as a humans.....And some of the choices to make in the game.
Cry Bloodwing oh so you’re saying that this game has choices then I actually like these types of games where choices effects your gameplay
LORD OSA Ehhh. Not really? It is more like there are multiple ways to get to the same conclusion. I can’t really give an example without spoiling it, unless you are okay with that. Just watch someone play the game.
Cry Bloodwing well I don’t care about getting spoiled cause I’m not that interested in the game so it’s fine
It's been years & I still can't get over this game. I even bought copies for my friends.
You are a good friend
where’s my copy bitch?
The Ending haunted me for days after.
Saint318 still hauntes me
But it fell so flat because the plot twist was revealed already revealed. I was really hoping for some "no wait, you're wrong" but it was exactly what you thought, it was exactly what they said. Why is the protagonist so stupid?
What? I don’t think that the protagonist was stupid, but rather ignorant. You have to realize that he needed a drive to get over his fear when retrieving and sending The Ark out into space. Also considering the fact that the idea of copying and pasting someone into existence must’ve been very disturbing for him and he obviously didn’t want to think about it. The consciousness has a way of blocking things out when you get traumatized, and I think in the case he was in that it was a coping mechanism for him. I would’ve reacted the same way that he did if it were me in his place. Just my thoughts.
I don't think the post-credit sequence had to be there. Kinda softened the impact of the ending for me.
Still a phenomenal story and game.
@@bryantkobean7184 the post credit ending in my opinion made it worse and more miserable for me
Jake never talks about it with us in the comment section
What I like best about SOMA is it delivers its horror not primarily in disturbing imagery or sudden jumpscares, but in the form of a psychological thriller that makes the paint run together and blend in a painting of black and white morality. It also challenges what it means to be human, to be alive, or to be an individual.
It brings up a similar dilemma with Star Trek matter transporters. Few people realize that "beaming" someone up does not teleport them, but rather it copies the person and destroys the original. This has been a subject of moral debate for a long time, and has been used as one in the show itself. (There are episodes and a movie where the data buffer or the process itself malfunctions causing either death, living copies of the same person, or terrifying insight, which all are reflected in SOMA in one way or another).
It's more creepy and investigation. Alot of Sci-fi horror can be like that. You just need to convince yourself your games not bugged.
One correction: There are monsters that get aggressive when you look at them.
+ZoruShark lolm2k
+ZoruShark Leffs*
+ZoruShark u mean there's enderman?
+Dulkidul Makdulsup Exactly. But different appearance of course.
@@ovio_ he has a pp
The dystopian theme is the horror, the horror of humanity, and sparks questions about existence and consiousness. The dilemmas presented in this game are the more frightening as you think abot them. Actually brilliant.
It’s *so* good.
You still suffer when you look at the monsters in this one, for sure. Normally, your screen tears, your vision blurs and your camera angle dips. It's like an extreme version of what happens in Amnesia, actually. EXCEPT:
SPOILER:
Except for that goddam giant fish beast in the Midnight Zone, and that goddam Angler Fish. They don't mess with your vision, but they definitely mess with your underwear. Never in my life have I felt dread equal to what I felt when I left that cave and saw that little light bobbing in the water in front of me. That was genius, considering the game had taught you to follow the lights to Tau just before that moment. Or seeing that big bastard swim into the light for a second while I was walking to Tau in the "storm." God. Dammit.
TrumpKingsly 100% agree. The angler fish got me good, fucking phenomenal game
dude i literally just finished the game like 5 minutes ago and im still in shock from how mind boggling the game was. That fish scared me too because i walked right towards it. Follow the lights came to bite me in the a**
That ending tho...
I still think about the end sometimes.. It was pretty bold to do that, respect.👍
i am sad :(
(just finished the game)
This game was a breath of fresh air. I'd easily list this as one of the games of the year. And by the way, Amnesia:TDD wasn't a one hit wonder, they've released the Penumbra games before that and those are good too.
he never said it was a one-hit wonder.
that is the best auto save icon! lol
+Sterling Doyle if poods gonna play this i am 100% sure that he'll say something like lets finger the butthole...
+hossam ahmed Ugh. THat over-rated POS?
Brandon Nielsen yep
+hossam ahmed I really dont want him playing this because no one else will get a chance to be viewed cause he will be the only one people will watch
+Brandon Nielsen For real, all his jokes are in some way related to sex or penises or vaginas.
The thing with Alien Isolation is that you have to change your tactics.....Cause eventually the thing hunting you will learn, and it will get you. Just a tid bit for those who haven't played AI yet cause the Alien's AI takes what you've been doing, and processes it into its search patterns. As in it will throw open some lockers, or check under the bed etc. etc. etc. that genral stuff cause trust me I use to hide in nothing, but lockers....and half way through the game it was getting closer, and closer then eventually it just threw open the door, and my inner lil' bitch voice kicked in.
wait this isn't alien isolation lol
@@luc.k7736 lmao
@@michaelhansgaard3888 am i missing something?
@@luc.k7736 no just you're not wrong
@@michaelhansgaard3888 oh so the guy's just having a little funni by commenting about Alien Isolation instead of SOMA right?
This is one of those games you have to experience. if you are into sci-fi. It feels great, polished. story is amazing. the scary stuff could have been cut out and it would still be amazing.
Throughout the whole thing I didn't once think it was a walking simulator (which it is) because, it feels so natural opening doors, looking monsters in rooms aliens 3 style. and snooping through the crew's personal effects. I wish there were more games like this!
Player: Well? How do i play?
Soma: NO!
Player: What?
Soma: FIGURE IT OUT!
Player: Ok, ok. Jeez
Soma: ...NO.
Just finished the game, I had a great time playing it, the atmosphere was awesome and the story was very interesting. It had me thinking about a lot once I finished the game and I love when stories do that. And it also was nice solving the puzzles (which weren't difficult, but all the mechanisms and lights and futuristic looking stuff made it feel really impressive). I can't agree more that the enemies were definitely not the sharpest tools in the shed, but hiding from 3 of them at once in a break room with the screen ready to explode and having them scream right in your ear was pretty stressful. But, getting out of that scenario alive was pretty rewarding. Well worth the buy, I'll be playing through again with all the opposite choices you can make throughout the game to see if that changes things up.
Am I the only one who felt like everything was so tedious and eventually got boring and repetitive? Ya the ending was interesting and depressing but honestly would much rather play outlast or something 💀 and don’t even get me started on some of the “puzzles”
I love how your video's serve 2 purposes for me. 1 I watch them all as they are released to get an idea of what games are like and also there video's like this that were made before I even subbed to the channel, picking up Soma for 2.99 on a sale and this video's really helped love the back log of games keep up the great work!
Finished this yesterday :D definitely a must buy if you liked Amnesia.
+Sera Lou agreed.
+Sera Lou I did not like Amnesia, I found its mechanics and jump scares highly annoying. But to my very surprise I like Soma a lot.
is it more like the first or second amnesia?
@@dcta51 It's like a fantastic games, never experienced a better underwater thing, the water physics is amazing, when you throw an object it realistic do what it should do in water A+++ Game / This technic is also used in Amnesia Rebirth.
Soma 10 / Amnesia Rebirth 9 I didn't like the ending.
If the youtube algorithm brought you here, let it be known this is sci fi horror gold.
I felt like some of the enemies, especially in the Theta part, were so clever. It felt like they could track me, sniff me out and figure out where I was hiding. Most enemies in the Amnesia and Penumbra series are just patrolling and can be easily outsmarted.
no LITERALLY!! I was unlocking some door in the theta location in the security room and the proxy came running in and i SWEAR it started sniffing me out. I was crouched in a corner and home boy just inched a little closer. If he got any closer i would've been a goner. I don't think I've ever held my breath so many times in a game. Amazing atmosphere building.
i cried at the end of the game
Same. Finsished it tonight and i was mindfucked so hard it made me cry
I keep comming back to this game for the last 4 years and oh God it still brings tears to my eyes...
Antonio J.H. I recently baught it and damn, what a great game
Likewise. It´s a tear dropping mind-fuck ending (/game) overall.
I’m about to start this game tonight. You guys got me hyped! I love atmospheric games with dark stories. Can’t wait.
Thanks for review, 2 minutes in its decided. I'm going for it.
also, first time when i saw a monster, i got it glitched. it was running in circles like a maniac XD
Lol, me too! It was the one he actually shows in the video xD I used that health thingy, as I was still wondering what it did. (wasn't a good idea) The thing charged at me, I panicked, tried the latter...it collapsed, then tried the stairs to the next area and then the monster was stuck by it's own entrance... XD
I must say this game really impressed me. I stopped playing "Horror" games a few years back because none of them scared me. Im very short into my playthrough with this game and already, im impressed. Not only is it scary, but everything is very fluid, the storyline so far is amazing. The game really keeps you on your toes.
I remember playing other horror games and calling when jump scares would happen, this game does not do that. Its very unpredictable and very fun to play.
I definitely think the story was the best part of SOMA and it really kept me wanting to keep playing. Everything you said about it is pretty damn spot on. I gave it an 8.5 out of ten in my first video game review ever. Out of the seven games I've finished so far this year, SOMA is my third favorite.
I still really need to finish Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, though.
Yea, This game is not scary at all compared to Amnesia Dark Descent... but the atmosphere & sound are pretty damn scary to be honest...also, This game has the BEST story than Amnesia... that will probably f**ked your mind... long story short.. SOMA is on my top 5 game this year... 9/10..
Aaaand in my opinion Amnesia Dark Descent is not scary at all compared to SOMA.
Aaaaannd my opinion that SOMA is still a good horror game after Amnesia TDD
Nobody ever mentions Penumbra nowdays ... So sad :(
Penumbra is a great game. But it's in the shadow of amnesia. That's why it's not talked about too much.
"Death is the final unknown."
There is a lot to argue whether Amnesia can ever overshadow Black Plague. In tech advancement - maybe. But the migration from HPL1 to HPL2 is not so prominent graphically. Other than that - I think those two are pretty much at the same level - the highest possible they can reach. IMHO - at some points Black Plague is better than Amnesia. It's just that Amnesia gained popularity among newcomers to this genre (such as me - I haven't seen Frictional till Amnesia). And SOMA? It certainly reaches a whole other level. I'm not saying higher or lower - it simply turns a new page.
In Amnesia, it slowly eases you into the world before you really come across a point where you can die (and the same goes for SOMA) but then it's just constant fear and running and hiding from things. For SOMA, there are points of just exploring and making your way through corridors and ocean floors without having to worry, but with the unsettling atmosphere that never lifts. The pacing here is a lot more friendly to the faint of heart and gives you a really interesting story and leaves tons of little clues as you work out what has happened to the world you're in.

It's not, I completed it and it's the creepiest game I ever played. And I played them all. Has a great story, atmosphere, and a twist that'll just make your jaw drop.
Soma lol
I meant all horror games
Ive beat the game. Is gud, wish i can erase my memory and play again
7 years of before you buys later and Soma is still one of the absolute best horror games out there. 7 years later and I still haven't been able to convince anyone to actually play this game though sadly.
Now on Gamepass
password on a notepad and remembering, reminds me of old school point and click puzzle games. it has a certain charm to it.
I would recommend this game. It's probably only 1/3 getting chased and stuff, and the rest story, which was a good change in pace. And the character relationship (by the end) was really emotional.
This makes me want to play. I want a horror game that a less... eh hmm.. coordinated player can play. Lol
just got the game and played it for a few minutes... I like the mood in the apartment and am super excited to leave work and get home to try this game out!
gameranx channel is growing bruh, congrats
Love the story! ... still loving the story. I bought the game before seeing this video and at this point I'm only about 1/2 way through. I've known about the game for well over a year but don't know much about it other than what I've played. I like how disoriented you are. They did a great job making the player feel as out of placed and as confused as Simon in the beginning. Part of me wishes there were more monsters in it, but at the same time the suspense of waiting for something to happen is even better!
What really makes this game is the story, the characters, and the IDEAS!
I started and stopped Soma 2 times before revisiting it a 3rd. The 3rd time was the charm. I am so into this game and this story, it’s so fascinating. Absolutely fantastic game, thought provoking sorry, amazing atmosphere and truly challenging puzzles
what a timing, I was just about to watching the 2part of the let's play of Cry :3
I love the underwater lab theme.
Dashie gonna play this either tomorrow or Saturday
Whos here Because of PS Plus?

Yeah boooy

Realy disappointing DEC :(
Me. But I'm still pissed at SONY.
This video convinced me to buy it. Well done.
Just can't stress how good that storyline is tho. Oh my gawd.
Just finished it. I Didn't play amnesia but did play prey and this reminds me a lot of that although I think the atmosphere here hits a lot closer to home. I honestly think this game was great and would highly recommend it to people who are okay with the "non combat, stealth horror" and the "learn the story by exploring" types of games. By the time you get to the end you are definitely immersed in the ideas it puts forth.
Best thing about this game is how many thoughts and ideas I had while playing it. Specially after finishing it.
I can't wait to play this, I really like the design
Great review but I had to laugh when he mentioned the password on the note you have to remember and find the door to unlock 😂 The note he is referring to is 4 steps away from the door and it’s the only way to go haha … But to be fair he is right, there definitely are other instances of this where it’s much more complicated
I'm really enjoying the game. I like the convo with Simon and Cath.
I finally got around to finishing SOMA this year and loved it. Simon annoyed me at the end though, and I could feel ****'s exasperation with him by that point as well.
This video should be 5 second long with only sentense - "Yes you should play"
Thanks for the video. I think I'm gonna give it a shot.
I believe this is worth buying. To be honest it's not too much of a horror, but the atmosphere can get intense and the story is really interesting. Unfortunately I also ran into some ugly bugs/glitches, the last one got me stuck into a place and of course it was saved exactly there. I had to find a way to undo this, and fortunately I had a save file just in case. Anyway it was time consuming and annoying but in the end I got over it and still enjoyed this game. If you enjoyed Amnesia, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one as well!
as others have said just got this with ps plus. am very much enjoying the game i have to say (not that far into it just entered another complex from underwater atm). definitely glad i am playing it
I loved the story, and the thing they did with the ending
The philosophy behind the message of the story is the real horror
I finally got around to playing Soma and it’s a damn good game it plays with outlandish themes and very unsettling subject matter. I was almost instantly hooked wanting to read and listen to the audio logs to uncover the truth. It really makes you think. Such a terrifying concept and with how AI/ scientific advancements are headed the idea is more relevant than ever. I would dare to say it’s ahead of it’s time
Finished it today, mah man does it leave you thinking
Got Soma awhile ago from my PS plus subscription, finally downloaded it to try it out. Gonna start tomorrow, I'll leave another comment later with thoughts of the game.

I like how it fucks with head and ethical dissions
Playing it for the first time. I’m impressed.
U convinced me to get this on my ps4 thx
I've been playing the game for about 5 hours now and so far it's been satisfying. It is much different from Amnesia in terms of scares, but is more atmospheric and engaging in other ways. I won't spoil it but your character is far more interesting in this game. Definitely worth waiting for.
Before I buy, I download and try :D
~ whip *crack* sound ~
I finished Soma today for the third time of gameplay, and this game still gets to me. The unease, existensial dread and even horror, and the ending. My God, the ending of this game. By the first time when I played it, I literally threw my mouse across the room, because I was so pissed. I mean it wasnt bad, the end solution just got to me so bad, I genuinelly felt rage towards Catherine.
All in all, even that this game is pretty old already, I highly recommend to anyone who loves science fiction and horror.
Also, you might want grab some tissues while playing this game, because some of the scenes are just sad as hell.
I love horror and I always play horror games, and it wasn’t scary as in monsters but it’s very suspenseful

Ye, enjoyed it and recommend for everyone who loves great story/drama
best review of the game convinced me on buying
I've just bought it. I do it for the plot, because I've heard it's fantastic however it's going to be very interesting experince - I hate horrors.
I love the intro of the game and of course the atmosphere they managed to create. they even did a better job than alien isolation. it all feels rusted and old and even the plot with uploading i mean. i would be comfortable with that "matrix" style of living espiecially if there is no way out
Hey Jake! I finished the game and I am currently uploading them on my channel. Yes, I do agree with everything you said about the game. It is heavily story-driven. It is not THAT scary in comparison to Amnesia. What I do love about this game is the story. It messes with your mind. I hope this is not a spoiler, but the story is very philosophical that deals with identity, existence, and after-life.
Jake why don't you post much on bcvg? Your star wars unboxing was amazing I also need more mgs from you
It's been 7 years and I just bought it for $5. Figured why not, right?
Would get this but i just got MGV so i dont really have time for it, might play it in 3 monthes
I just bought it. I haven't gotten past the beginning with that robot. Do I need a walkthrough? Is it as scary as outlast?
i have seen SO MAny good things about this games
I'm not one on the horror genre, but I'm digging this game.
I'm downloading now so we shall see!!!! Can't wait. I really want a game that will make me run and hide under the covers!!!

I've just downloaded the game, I can not wait to play it 😛😛
The places are so damn big I can’t find where I am supposed go I just walk around till I find it
When I finished this game I was depressed for months
It's a walking simulation game. You given one choice which doesn't effect the end story.
Agree for a large part. Soma offers you a graphically rich atmosphere, with an interesting unfolding story. It has few horror elements which is positive, since I disliked the monsters sections especially when they are mixed in with exploration. Some puzzles were too difficult. Also the game becomes a little bit repetitive with the fetch and repair missions, but overall it's easy recommendable if you like to experience an immersive story.
Man, you’ve come a long way in the writing department since 2015.
Their best game is still Penumbra, that thing gave me so much fear, even when playing with 3 friends in the room, I would play for 10 minutes, get to a really terrifying door which I didn't wanna go near, then quit. 10 minutes was the most I could do haha. Most underrated game ever.
I simply love this game. Such a great story!
