      When you only have two doors and two windows it really doesn't even matter. It's probably more simple to just reach over to the passenger side and unlock the door instead of looking down at all the controls and trying to find where the unlock button is on the driver's side

      HA!... how many times i heard this before only from people that bought vehicles with crank windows!! .. power windows typically never go bad, I got 23 yo land cruiser with power everything still working..Crank windows still have gears and can also break and fall off tracks which has happened to me... power windows all the way, fear not!!

  • @CCWP0251
    @CCWP0251 Před 7 lety +15

    95% of the things mentioned can be fixed. Being a Ranger owner, I'm going to add this as well... Yes, you do have cargo lights. You have to slam the roller switch up pretty hard to get them to come on. Also, every Ford truck I've ever been in has a threaded yet extremely tight shifter knob. It should be removable. And, you are 110% correct about the center arm rest. They are junk lol btw, if those exhaust heat shields are rattling, rip them off. That's what I've always done. The Ranger does have its share of issues, but luckily, many can be taken care of.

    @TheFootbaldd Před 7 lety +53

    You made one valid point, and that was the busted arm rests. At 270k miles my driver seat and center console make yours look brand spanking new. I have the arm rest Velcroed shut, but I might put in a new bench soon. The rest of your list is a bunch of BS. Change the shift knob, replace the parking brake cable, put a new muffler on it, repair the blower resistive voltage divider, and remount your tires if the lettering bothers you. That is what we call maintenance and upkeep. The 98 is far from being an early model ranger. Third doors/half doors weren't really around back then, and the ranger is a simple truck. The ranger served its purpose well, and now there are no small cheap trucks on the market. I mean, you can't even get a manual in most new trucks. If you learn anything from all of the luxury cars of the past; all the unnecessary bells and whistles are just extra crap to break, which often means that those issues never get fixed due to the cost of new dealer parts. Real complaints would be like putting in 8 spark plugs that require u-joints to get to, or how its a pain in the ass to get clearance when pulling the valve cover on the I4.

    • @Solmangrundy
      @Solmangrundy Před 6 lety +1

      I have the 1996 L4 2.3l, engine maintenance is probably a 2/5. >Having to remove the entire intake and manifold just to change spark plugs and pcv valve.
      >A timing belt that requires you remove pretty much all accessories and the fan/radiator.
      >A manual transmission that requires you drop the whole thing if ANYTHING breaks so might as well just replace everything while you have it off (clutch, seals, slave cylinder, bearing).
      >A blend door that WILL break because its made of cheap plastic, the upgrade/replacement is metal/plastic.
      >Heater core/AC valve vacuum lines too close to exhaust manifold, and have a tendency to "droop down" and melt in half on the exhaust manifold if not tied up. >The gas/brake/clutch pedal bracket/mount has a tendency to form a crack. So far i've had to replace it on every manual ford ranger i've come across.
      >The master clutch cylinder is held in with a spring and is a pain in the ass to put in by yourself.
      >A lot of crap is also held in with plastic clips that pretty much break the first time you try to remove them so everything is pretty much held together with glue, zip ties, and hose clamps.
      >The press-mold parking brake/e-brake release knob will come off or break off. They dont sell replacement knobs so you have to make your own or buy and replace the entire asymbly (its all because that one knob is press/mold fitted).
      Its an all day ordeal doing general maintenance on one thing almost anywhere on this truck. Vs other small trucks like a Tacoma, it lacks in the ease of maintenance department.
      All in all it is reliable, you upkeep it properly and you'll usually only be fixing/maintenancing one thing every other year.
      I've blown head gaskets, fuses, broke belts, and still have been able to "fix it" on the fly and limp home. One things for sure they really ment "Like a Rock" in those old ford commercials.

    1. The paint quality (the clearcoat is almost gone on the roof)
    2. Access to the left headlamp bulb involves removing the battery and airbox
    3. The 4spd auto (very problematic on this gen. mine was replaced at 90K)

    My 2000 ranger i had, which is similar to yours had rear suicide doors. The cargo lights were actually functional and pretty good. The shift knob was aftermarket. It was a 4.0 5speed 4x4. Very basic XLT as it only really had power locks, mirrors and Windows. But it was a damn good work truck. Got me where i needed to go. Reasonable fuel economy even with tires 3 sizes over stock. Personal preference, the ranger. Either love or hate. Once im done with my f250, i might get another ranger!

  • @butchthedragon

    the nonworking fan settings can be fixed fairly easy(#6)! its a small box of resistors on the other side of the firewall under the hood in the general area of the glove box(opposite side of the firewall) you just get a new one. take out like 3 or 4 bolts disconnected it and reinstall the new one! mine did the same thing and it works perfect now!

    • @stephenkrawiecki8157
      @stephenkrawiecki8157 Před 8 lety

      I would also add that I had that same problem with my 91 Ranger. However, in addition to the blower resistor, I had to also replace the pig tail for that resistor box. The road salt corroded the metal connection points for both components. What was also interesting was that the plastic components of these parts were partly melted. Before the resistor box failed, the corroded metal parts heated up and melted the plastic. I was lucky that there was not a fire.

    1. There is no reason to dislike the "cargo light".
    2. I agree with the "no suicide door" thing. The back seats are concealed in there, however, so doors would be un-ideal. Prolonged weight would cripple the hinges and the door would fall of eventually.
    3. 4 pedals is pretty fucking stupid, but resting the left leg in any manual transmission vehicle is damn near impossible.
    4. Shift knob is purely cosmetic. Get over it.
    5. FUCK THAT ARMREST/CENTER COMPARTMENT! HARD. It's a piece of shit, I agree.
    6. The only reason you need AC is to defrost your windshield. Roll your damn windows down.
    7. RE-adjust, RE-adjust, RE-adjust, RE-adjust your emergency break. It is stupid easy.
    8. It's a 98. Get new seats or gtfo.
    9. "Oh no! It doesn't have power anything. I'm such a bitch. I wanted a fancy truck. How will I ever get the sand out of my vagina if I can't roll down my windows without any effort?" That's pretty much what you sound like.
    10. FUCKING FIX IT.
    -Love, a fellow 98' XLT owner.

    Thinking about buying one of these. Someone totaled my car on Thursday by running a red light. Kinda a blessing in a way since I was paying $568.00 per month on my previous car. Now I refuse to finance anything else and need a truck for the snow. Are parts easy to find for the truck or no? - Reason this truck caught my interest is people are selling them for around $1800-$2800 in my area.

    • @CoolStuffInWeirdCars
      @CoolStuffInWeirdCars  Před 7 lety

      Parts are very very easy to find for these. I would definitely recommend buying one although if you're looking for 4wd, I know one common problem is the electronic transfer case having issues. Other than that, they're generally very sound. Mine goes well in snow as long as I have some extra weight in the bed haha.

My biggest complaint is that it's bouncy when driving on a road with small dips. I recently put new upper/lowers, a little bigger size tires (235×75×15 ) and shocks. Still the same. I've put up with it for 26 years, so kinda gotten used to it. I wouldn't sell my little truck for nothing!

    Your cargo lights activate/ turn on at the dimmer switch by rolling the switch up.. my truck looks the same.. my problems are the heater blend door.. I agree with the lack of power locks and Windows.. the seats are uncomfortable.. have to re adjust anytime you put anything in back.. the center arm rest is a joke.. I seriously want to start a petition, to have Ford engineers forcibly castrated..

    Very very similar to your truck.
    I have the same issue with my arm rest. I have some rope tied around it. Its frustrating as hell.
    Also the exact same problem with my drivers seat. It hurts my back aftet driving for a while as I sink in a bit amd throws my spine out of whack. I dont know how to fix it.
    Overall Its a very good, reliable truck. I have 206,000 + miles on mine.
    Gas mileage isn't great however. But I do have the 4.0 V6

    Hey dude great vid! you sure do have a lot of issues with your truck though :/ i bought my 1999 ford ranger xlt sport used a few months ago with 78,000 miles so its a baby still. its a 5 speed manny 2.5L and i actually have none of those problems. my truck has the cargo lights, its a single cab so technically i also dont have a back door, the inside of my lid is cracked but its not a huge issue to me. im confused on what the clutch foot problem is? my clutch foot has plenty of room on the side of the clutch pedal.

      Thanks! They must have changed a lot from 1998-1998 haha. I don't know about the pedals either but there's around an inch if not less of space between my Emergency Brake and my Clutch pedal. and all these issues mean that I get to get some more experience in trying to fix them which I'm not mad about.

    The Ford Ranger is what it is, a compact truck. You should have not bought it if you were too big not to fit in it. Everybody does maintenance on their vehicles. If you can't do it, then pay someone else to do it. I have a 1990 Ford Ranger Custom with 236,756 miles on the engine, and it runs like brand new, the body is fine, and it gets 25 MPG (5 sped manual. 2.3L throttle body injection). It is my daily driver, and I am well satisfied with it. I do my own maintenance on it, so I know it well. A Ranger isn't "junk" as you describe it. You just do not take care of it. So, don't be a wuss - grab a wrench and get busy.

      I know this is an old comment but I'm 6'3 and 240 lbs and I drive a ranger. Simply put, it's all I could afford used, and it had the least miles of what was available. I love that little truck😂 only issue was the foot well being too small for my feet, but I did a little personal mod on it, and it worked out great ranger danger club💪💪

    The brakelight/cargolight combo ontop is put there because of Lawyers. Its been an addition since like the 1980's on all trucks. Cars have them too.
    They glued the stock shift nob onto the rod from factory. You'll have to cut it off to replace it.
    And lol i agree with the center console, 9.9/10 the lid latch is broken, and its stained with dead skin from the drivers arm.

    I"ve had a dozen new Rangers since 86 and own two 2010's now.
    I've never had the issues he's having. I could name one or two but quite minor. Like, I'd like the max A/C position to still cycle via the thermostat position. Gets too cold constantly on as that position is. I want to keep inside air circulating because the cool position opens outside air and in comes pollen (Florida).

    my 99 XLT Sport has no radio (well it doesn't work and has no faceplate it's just a black brick sitting in the slot) there is a dent in the front bumper right below the grill, along with a hole in the grill near the Ford logo. The fog lights plastic bottom piece of the front bumper, it's left side is held onto the truck via two zip ties. and it has 4x4 high and low in the cab, but I can't access it. The switch isn't on and the actual turning point attached to the light being the face plate (I'm forgetting the name of the part, maybe 4x4 activation switch? idk) isn't attached properly. it's kind of just hanging there from the wire connector. Also my cruse control both buttons on the steering wheel are the same, they had been snapped off and they too just hang by their wire connectors and are like dog ears off of the wheel. they still work, I just have to be careful when using them. And I too have no power windows or locks. Also its the automatic 3.0L Vulcan. Wanted a stick shift but at the time sticks were too pricey so went with the cheaper 99 automatic

  • @TURBOMIKEIFY

    That's odd. I just got my 98 Ranger XLT from my uncle. Sure it needs work, but a lot of things are different between yours and mine. I have power windows (driver side is automatic down). My cargo lights turn on. I don't have the steps on the side like yours, but my bed is rather long. My shift knob is in good shape. One thing tat I can agree with you about is the E Brake. Mine doesn't work. I have to keep my truck in gear when I park it (should get that fixed). Also, I wear a size 11-12 shoe and I have no problems with my clutch foot. I have perfect ammounts of space. My center console is broken also.

    I understand some of the complaints, especially the stupid armrest, but many are of your issues with the trucks are ridiculous or just simply easily fixable. Also, chrome grille & bumpers, upgraded door panels with carpeting & pockets, carpet & CD player are other options you have. Stepside & supercab have nothing to do with the XLT trim package.
