My opinions on perfume declutters have changed since I've been on CZcams, I used to wonder why people bought perfume they don't enjoy but now understand that they can be helpful... But I also realise that these videos are some of the most watched perfume content on CZcams. But why is this? Why are perfume declutters the fast food binge of the perfume content world? Why do we both love and hate watching them? And why can't we stop?
Here I share 10 reasons why we watch fragrance collection declutters and talk about why CZcamsr declutters can be different to those done in private.
So this video was prompted by a question from @sidselalbertsen898 thank you so much for the inspiration! I've got more subscriber requested video ideas coming so please if you have a request, let me know!

I look forward to your videos each Saturday morning. I sometimes feel scammed by fragrance CZcamsrs when they hype a fragrance but then declutter the same fragrance a few weeks later.

Yes, I have to say that I also find that triggering 🤣 it seems to push all the wrong buttons for me!
Reason #3 is the main reason that I watch declutter videos. I think I learn more from why a person gets rid of a fragrance than I do from why they bought it. I’m very aware of the influence of hype and FOMO, so haul videos are done when people are still on the “honeymoon” period and may be subconsciously justifying their purchase.
I completely agree, the reasoning can be so helpful.
I think as well as hype and FOMO, when another channel that the channel owner is friends with has said something is amazing, there is pressure for the other person to also rave about it. That's how particular perfumes spread across CZcams I think, e.g. Donna, Rogue and Still.
I love decluttering videos in general but find fragrance declutters particularly interesting as the person is usually totally honest about why they're moving it along, as you said. Always useful to know the negatives of a perfume. I also enjoy a vicarious sense of satisfaction seeing someone getting rid of stuff they don't need. I find it very difficult to be so decisive 🤷♀️
Yes me too, I declutter twice a year, but I have to be completely sure that I don't want them before I film a video. I don't ever want to be hasty and regret anything... I'm such a hoarder! You will see with my collection video. If you compare me to most of their CZcamsrs, I think most of my fragrances are very old... But yes, if I enjoy them or have an emotional connection to them, they aren't going anywhere! 😊 Thanks for watching 🥰

Probably everyone wonders ''Why?'' at first. But fragrances can accumulate fast and why keep something you know you won't wear, because you have so many more you love.
I don't think I would stop watching someone just because they declutter a fragrance I love. Not everyone has the same taste or skin... If anything, I find it a little sad that they don't get the same happy experience I get from a fragrance. 🤔
If someone has similar tastes as mine, declutter videos can warn me about fragrances that might not suit me.

It's really strange isn't it? I can't believe I was so judgey looking back 😂 but I do totally understand why people can feel negatively towards them, they are a hallmark of overconsumption I guess!
@@dr.claire.perfume I also had resentment early on because I had purchased, on their recommendation, ones that they decluttered. I felt betrayed! 😆 Of course, I now feel differently. My purchases are my responsibility, not theirs. But I felt that at first (naively, I suppose!).

I enjoy declutter videos because it helps me get more educated as my tastes change. I especially enjoy hearing why the reviewer decides to keep or declutter (longevity, sillage, projection, dry down, etc).
Yes! Declutter videos can be super informative and they cut straight to the stuff you need to know about a fragrance. 🥰
Whyyyyy are people so emotional over what someone on CZcams likes or dislikes? I’ve seen people so upset bc someone decluttered a frag they previously raved about and “influenced” others to buy. Ummmm? I am too old to care. I have over 200 perfumes. I love them all. Someone else’s declutters don’t change my mind on what I love or dislike. People are way too goofy & serious over things that really don’t matter. Triggered goofs.
Yes! Your own opinion is not someone else's. If you've tried it, bought it and love it, it shouldnt matter what anyone else says 😊 I completely agree 👍

Hi Claire 👋 I've had to sell some of my collection due to financial hardship at the moment. I had 70 & am down to 47. Out of all those sales, I won't miss the majority as it was also a good exercise at curating my collection. I only sold 2 that really pained me to sell which I didn't want to, but needed the money badly. Those 2 were Stella EDP (unopened bottle) & Miss Dior Cherie EDT (only 1 wear used) 😭😭 However, we keep going & I'm sure I'll get some nice new things next year when things get financially better 🙏 Love your videos & our chats together! ❤
I also don't think I have many, if any declutter regrets, I try to make sure I really don't want something before saying goodbye. I can totally understand Stella and miss Dior Cherie being difficult ones to sell. I hope you got some good prices for them 🤞 and I hope things improve. Thanks for watching as always! I agree with the points you made in your video.
Declutters can be helpful in that it can help stop blind buying and give an honest view on a fragrance. Especially fragrances that get over hyped.
The only thing that triggers me is when creators get the fragrances given to them, they talk about it like it's the best thing ever and then... A few months later in a fragrance collection video those bottles are nowhere to be seen. That makes me feel like that person was a bit dishonest. Particularity if they didn't do a video taking about not keeping a fragrance, or explaining why they sold it on. It looks more like shilling fragrances and trying to get them for free for promotion than because it was genuinely loved.
I am not against people getting complimentary bottles, however I appreciate an honest opinion on them, or even a review style report about something explaining what it is, while qualifying that it isn't to their taste.
Ultimately I have been burned with a few blind buys from buying into hype. That was my mistake and I learned that I should always try to sample first. I put a filter on in my mind and I can enjoy watching without feeling the pressure to purchase everything out there. There is simply too much for anyone to ever consider buying it all. It's just too expensive to make those mistakes over and over.
I guess I don't like seeing a constant purchase declutter cycle to justify buying or to get views. That goes for anything a person could consume. It's bad for the planet.
I do tend to be on the use it up system still... Unless I can give it to someone I know who I think would enjoy it.

Yes I completely agree, if you get something in PR or even buy something and show it on your channel and it suddenly disappears never to be mentioned again, there should be an explanation about what happened to it, because it really confuses the audience that do watch closely. I have seen that a few times with gifted FdB perfumes, those definitely ended up on eBay because I saw them and the background used in videos 🤣
I just got my first PR and it took me ages to decide whether to accept it at all... I don't want random stuff, I don't want pressure to give a positive review, and I only want to accept things that are relevant and that I believe at least might be good products. Thankfully these are good, phew! 🤣 I have turned down jewellery, homeware, handbags and other fragrances that I just didn't think we're relevant or something I might love. 🤷♀️
I think that for channels, that haul-declutter cycle is often because people feel massive pressure to buy new fragrances to keep their channels fresh and they struggle to finish any fragrances because of that and feel overwhelmed. I also think some channels may struggle financially sadly and resell fragrances to fund new ones.

Well I'm safe from the regrets category, I haven't had the time or energy to film and list perfumes to declutter. I have them tucked away for the day that I feel up to it, lol. I think I'm one of the few that doesn't enjoy declutters too much. I watch my favorite people, because they're my favorites, but for the most part the cycle makes me feel down. I'm a collector at heart.

Thank you 🥰 yes I think there is a big split between collectors and people who declutter. It just depends on your motivations, neither is right or wrong. Decluttering for me is simply when I know I won't enjoy something, there's no other reason for me to do it in the main. I really didn't understand decluttering at all when I first started making videos either! I still find it odd that they are so popular as a video format 🤷♀️ thanks for watching ❤️

I declutter twice a year generally and I have a holding area. I find a few get put back into my collection but mostly once they are in there, they are going! 🙂

Yes, it's completely what you are comfortable with and really not everyone will feel the need to declutter and that is fine too. I do get that feeling of being overwhelmed if I have stuff I don't love and know I won't use.

I will never understand anyone who gets triggered over perfumes. That blows my mind. I’ve never been offended because someone doesn’t like a perfume I love. I guess I feel confident enough in myself to not need anyone else’s validation, and I also know perfume is subjective. I just find it all fascinating. Another great informative video. ❤❤❤ I do love a good declutter video!
Thank you! And yes, if someone hates it, it doesn't matter at all. I guess I was offended once during a declutter, but that's because a content creator singled me out to comment that I liked this fragrance and that I was the only one, freeze framed an unflattering video image of me, raised her eyebrows at the same time and was clearly doing it to be mean and make fun of me, but other than that, all good. That wasn't to do with the declutter, that was to do with a kind of sad bullying. Me too! I absolutely love a declutter 😊

Yeah, I think anyone would be! 🤣 I was really upset at the time, but I've just learnt it's their issue. I have tried to be the bigger person and continue to support their channel as they are still active. If you want to know, I will tell you but privately. The video is still up I think 🤔
I used to get overwhelmed by all the choices at department stores of fragrances and end up buying something just to buy something.
I’ve had to giveaway a lot of fragrances that ended up not working on my skin such as; peony and blush suede, l’heure Bleu, elie saab parfum, black orchid, Charlie blue, blue grass, Elenisia. It’s ridiculous but I’m getting better at choosing.
Yes, understanding that it's fine to just walk away and actually even a great decision is a big thing. I haven't decluttered any of the ones that you have but I tried l'heure bleue in store and I realised that I would never wear it. Similar with blue grass, it was my grandmother's signature but it's not a fragrance that I would want to own. Making mistakes definitely makes us understand our tastes more and makes it more likely we will better suit them with our choices in future. Thanks for watching 🥰
I find that declutter vids are the ones I get the most real reviews. I found fragrances I love from how it was described on a declutter vid, hypnotic poison for example, I love the almond note that give a little playdoh lol

People these days get triggered so easily 😂 It doesn't matter how much you warn them that not everything you say will be positive or that you state that what you have to say is just an opinion 🤣 You are right, they love the sensation ❤
I have really noticed that negative fragrance reviews get a lot of dislikes. It's ultimately an opinion, not a fundamental truth 🤷♀️ some people do need to chill 😂

I know that I really enjoy declutter videos. I'm not trying to have a huge collection that I don't absolutely love. And, sometimes your opinions change. It's okay to have your time with a fragrance, and then realize later that it's no longer for you. And that's just growth.
Totally! I think especially when you are starting out, your opinions sometimes change dramatically. And yes, curating your collection to only stuff that you love wearing is a great aim to have, but buying very selectively in the first place is the default strategy 😊 thanks for watching ❤️

I personally don’t like watching declutter videos, it feels as if I’m agreeing to being wasteful. Some throw out after a few sniffs not giving something a proper chance - the instant gratification epidemic. I therefore don’t want to contributing to CZcamsrs eagerness to please their followers.

Yes! I remember feeling exactly the same way when I first started watching CZcams. The truth is that those videos are the most popular ones, at least in the short term, and are an easy way to gain subscribers. You will notice that the biggest channels tend to declutter regularly. The psychology of it is pretty fascinating!
That's a really interesting topic you've covered. Personally, I don't like watching perfume declutters. I just annoyes me how wasteful most people filming such videos are, as later I see them doing a huge blind buy haul just the next day after a declutter. I just find this cycle of purging and stacking up again really strange and unreasonable.
It is strange, I agree, but I guess finishing fragrances does take a long long time and sometimes they are only available in large volumes. The way to try a lot of stuff is to sample of course. 🙂 Thanks for watching 🥰

Hi, Claire ❤️ Your content is always interesting! I am guilty of judging perfume declutters years ago, I have sinned 😇 But now it's very useful & a necessary part of this unusual journey... I love decluttering videos in general. The Marie Kondo book changed my life, to be frank 😅

I think I try to declutter but I am definitely a hoarder in some respects. If I can resell something I will but if it will simply be binned, I try to use it up. I think Marie kondo taught me that just having joy from having bought something is ridiculous, but also enough if you don't love it, you shouldn't feel guilt for letting something go. I honestly didn't understand perfume declutters at all when I first started 🤦♀️ 🤣
@@dr.claire.perfumehave moved at least 10 times in my life, so I'm used to decluttering by now, but fragrance decluttering is the hardest thing & I need to push myself to do it at least 1 time per year. I never throw out things - I either donate, gift or sell. Binning something still of value (to other people) is something I will never practice. We don't have a Planet B 🦄

I watch declutter videos because of all the 10 reasons, but I have an 11th as well: to observe if the content creator is trustworthy.
If a person loves, raves, and says they're obsessed about something in Jan, give me an affiliate link and declutter the same thing in Dec...over and over I stop trusting them and unfollow the channel.
I also dislike creators who rebuy and declutter multiple times the same perfume..it gives me the impression that their collection doesn't have a purpose or they don't know what they are doing.

Yes spot on! Also the lack of mentioning that something was gifted in subsequent videos is also a thing! That is against the rules for the US, which we all have to abide by if we have a US audience. Anything gifted is supposed to be reiterated as such in each video and in the description box too.
Lol same, I can't imagine why anyone would rebuy something they'd decluttered, that's insane. If you got rid of it once, why would you want it again? I have got the same fragrance in a secondhand bundle before but I've never set out to specifically rebuy something I've decluttered. 🤣
Great deep dive Claire. I do love declutters and collection videos, like you say they are often valuable sources of information.
I tend to know when it is the right time to declutter a particular fragrance, and as they come in one by one, they go out one by one too. I just become aware that I'm not loving it as I once did and not reaching for it. I'll try it out a few more times to see if I fall back in love. But then when I've made the decision to declutter, I usually want it gone as soon as possible. That way it can make room for something else I have on my wishlist
Yes you are definitely quite determined once you feel something is working for you any longer. Actually I think declutters are also a result of the fact that perfume brands haven't caught up with the fact that a lot of people don't have signature scents any longer and like to switch it up. More 20ml and 15ml bottles would probably mean fewer people had stuff they no longer love.

I saw the title of your video and postponed pressing play to think of my own reasons of watching declutters in order to avoid being biased. I came up with just being nosy as the main reason. Even in real life I am very interested in seeing what perfumes other people have, and I often ask for permission to smell them if I happen to visit someone and see their perfumes on display(I'm not so proud about it, and would never do it for other stuff).
The second one was normalization, I love collections bigger than mine for that reason😅
After watching your video, I can say I definitely relate to the aspirational reasons, and I guess deep down all of us fragrance lovers dream of the perfect collection. I also think that's impossible, but that's a story for another day.
The one reason that I find the most interesting in your video is the trigger one. I never thought too much of this, but now that you've mentioned it, wow, it is true! It's huge for some people...

Normalisation is huge for others with large collections and yes curation too. I do think a lot of people just like that feeling of tutting along to a declutter weirdly 🤣 it's a bit like watching a game show and calling out the answers 😂

I think you've got all the main reasons, lol. For me, my main 2 reasons for watching declutter videos are getting intel on what I might not like about a scent and checking to see if something on my ISO list is getting decluttered so I can maybe snag it, haha!
Yes I think the reasoning is really important to a lot of people, which is why I am sometimes shocked when I watch declutters and they don't really reason why stuff is going... Surely that is most of the point of the video? 😂 I never bought anything from anyone's declutters, did you? Did it work out?
I don't really set out to watch just any declutter video. Very early on, I sampled most of the perfume videos and came down to 6 that I consider to be the crème de la crème for various reasons. If anything, I have to fight against feeling "guilty" that I don't declutter. I may not absolutely love every single one of my perfume buys, but they were chosen with care (due to my medical issues) and I enjoy each of them. And I fully intend using them until they are gone -- I just may not buy another bottle:) I've reorganized my collection so they are broken down into four locations and bought acrylic stands and holders to keep things more easily identifiable and uncluttered looking. And I now have a new buying plan. I'm allowing myself to purchase travel sprays (on sale) and Dua's solos (which hold twice as much as travel sprays) on sale. So I'll be spending a lot less and can always find room for these smaller items:)

Yes I think reasoned declutters can be useful from some channels. It can be interesting to see what is bothering some people about particular fragrances.

I havent watched too many declutter videos. But even before they became a thing, I ve concluded that I do need to get rid of about a third to half of my collection. I just wonder, where do the people do it? Ebay changed in the last 5 years. I used to be happy with selling them on ebay, quite profitably, I mean for a relevant price as used ones, but nowadays,with or without the algorithm, no one wants to buy them. I have a few deigner and niche I ve placed there and I had views, but no one bought them so after a several placements I ve just lost money to ebay and not sold any.
I declutter because I did not realise I have the same type of the fragrance I blindly bought based on reviews, and then a new type of new notes and other type leaning came into fashion or became available, so I ended up with quite a few designer ones in the same style. NIche ones are pure experiments but there s those that are not hyped now so the other brands became obscure.

I agree, it's hard now to sell at a reasonable price or at all on eBay. People seem to have a narrower focus with fragrances there. Niche especially can be a challenge when tastes and styles move on. eBay also take a ginormous fee these days, about 12% and listing offers are few and far between, so yes, I totally get it!

Yes, I guess that can be helpful when you have storage issues. I wish I was better with that system with clothing, I have a lot of old stuff that should probably go for recycling but I hang on to the comfy stuff.

I have a lovely collection of favourites, ( around 100 perfumes), which all have a time and place depending on my mood and/ or season. I actually find decluttering perfumes offensive and I really dislike them because a lot of the viewers do not have acces to a lot of the perfumes the youtuber is being disgusted by (having raving about them before of course), and to the perfumers must be an insult as well, but I had never said nothing because it is so common and I did´nt want to be disrispectful towards the content creator. I try to respect everybody´s opinion
Well I guess as long as you know it's a declutter video, you can avoid watching it if you want to avoid it. I would imagine perfumers understand that people's opinions will vary about their fragrances. I imagine, especially with designer offerings, they are also very limited by cost in what they can do, so sometimes I bet they are not even happy with the finished product themselves.
I get why people film declutters if they are doing them anyway privately, but of course also CZcams rewards declutter videos with huge view counts, I assume it's content that appeals to a lot of people because it's quick and digestible information, but it does seem a little sad that someone can spend a long time making an interesting original video that won't get half as many views as a declutter. The very first video I ever saw of yours back in the days of affordable loo roll and being able to put a light on for 5mins was one of your declutters.
I think there are many different types of declutters actually which I think you went over. There are those who have too many and feel the sense of sanity getting rid of something they don't want or wear. There are definitely the career declutterers for views... The continuous cycle of alleged declutterers and hauls like you say. Those who declutterer the PR (hopefully gifting it to friends as they didn't pay for it). 🙄. Then there are those of us who can be fiscally sensible keeping everything balanced.
What you say is right about the "honest" point people may actually say why they aren't mad fans of something.
I talk about fragrances I hate 🤣 this is why I'll never be an influencer...
Triggered? Oh yes I live to be annoyed 🤣 it's not so much its the fragrances or even what people say about them for me. It's the 19th Century bizarre attitudes and utter gibberish folks say and even more than that the actually not saying anything at all about a fragrance... As well as the endless shilling and begging and straight up lying to get the next freebie. I have videos on these topics 🤣
The satisfaction is good for the genuine declutteres I can imagine the release and freedom from the stress. I have no ability to declutter 🤣 at the moment I don't want to. But I do need space.

Yes, I think saying when you declutter something gifted is a must. I hate when people get PR and it just seems to magically disappear from their collection without mention... I've seen that with FdB fragrances in some collections. I get that people want to maintain brand connections but ultimately if people are doing this professionally, I think CZcams needs to have some kind of button, that says I earn all my money from brand relationships and therefore my views will be influenced... That kind of relationship is very different to a casual CZcamsr getting a few things to review.
And yes I agree about selling PR, but I guess it might be nice for them to give the money to charity perhaps as an option if not giving the fragrance to other people.

I've recently started watching a few people on Booktube and you have the same "hauls" and "unhauls," discussions on how they couldn't resist a sale, people giving "tours" of their bookshelves, or announcing beforehand that they have a negative opinion of a wildly popular book that will probably lose them some subscribers, etc. Sound familiar?

Unlike most people I don't particularly like declutter videos. I suppose they make me sad, especially when the fragrances being decluterred are really expensive ones. The money spent on them could actually feed a poor child in Africa for a year. Of course I don't mean that people should keep fragrances they don't like but maybe make more mindful purchases.
I guess that brings a wider point about whether people have a ceiling for how much they will spend on fragrance before they consider it to be too much generally. think the idea of decluttering to some degree is that people resell the fragrances and make some or all of their money back. I think most of the time with secondhand fragrances, you can recoup most/all of the cost. Also with the more expensive fragrances, especially on larger channels, a lot of those will have been gifted by the brand for promotional purposes, so they won't have paid for them in the first place. Mindful purchasing is definitely the way to go 😊

I’ve geared up to sell them on Mercari, but have not pulled the tigger. I’m not sure I want to go through the process of photographing, listing, selling and shipping. So many people say they want them but then never pay too 🤦♀️ it does seem a lot of hassle for not very much money sometimes. It's always great when one person buys a few, it feels more worth it.
