I am just trying to answer the above question based on my personal knowledge and experience of both the venue where this stand-up show was filmed and what I know about Ellen DeGeneres herself as I have been a fan since the very beginning of her career in the early to mid 80's. So read it or don't read it; I am never offended when someone, even my friends and family, see some ridic long post or comment from me and just scroll right past it. I am extremely loquacious, I know this, and at this point I am too old to try to change that, not to mention I don't even care to try. As Popeye would say, I yam what I yam, and I am okay with it.** That said, vests were VERY popular in the early 90's!! I'm a heterosexual woman (then single, now married) and I know I wore them to work regularly with pants and skirts! Also, altho Ellen had not yet come out publicly/professionally, it was not exactly a well kept rumor/secret. And as a native South Floridian, I can tell you for a fact that this specific period of time, 1992 South Beach, Miami, Florida, was one of the most open, accepting environments for ANYONE who may have felt unwelcome, persecuted, or simply out of place in their hometowns, so many people flocked to SoBe, especially openly gay people. The 90's in general, but especially the early 90's, SoBe was such a laid back place. Anyone could go there just to hang out or to even take residence, and you would find yourself mingling with long-time residents (as in the retirees who decided to spend their golden years in S FL,) sometimes random celebs who would just show up at clubs and restaurants and just hang out with the regular residents and non-famous tourists. Nowadays, the diversity of the residents and visitors still exists, but the celebs who frequent, or even own homes in South Beach - they pretty much only socialize with OTHER celebs and the wealthy, beautiful people. It's no longer a common, regular occurrence to just be out and about doing normal every day stuff, going to a neighborhood bar, restaurant, or even just hanging on the actual beach and bumping into someone famous doing the same. Which is kind of sad, because it was totally one of the coolest things ABOUT South Beach back in the day. For another thing, South Florida in general really has no hard and fast dress code or old fashioned/outdated fashion rules (like the no white after labor day bs.) Seriously, just about anything goes! My own friends and I would go out to clubs/restaurants/shops anyplace really in Ft. Lauderdale - my hometown - wearing whatever the hell was comfortable, sometimes even with no shoes and nobody said boo about it. When you live approximately 5 miles from the actual sun and it's so hot and humid even after the sun goes down, casual dress is REALLY casual!!! Like, as close to naked as you can legally get away with AND personally feel comfortable with in public. If you look at some of Ellen's earlier appearances in the 80's like on A&E's Evening at the Improv (that was the first time I saw her - it was one of my favorite shows to watch in the 80's & 90's! - and I thought she was HILARIOUS) and Johnny Carson, she did wear dresses and tried to look a bit more traditionally "feminine" but even so, she definitely had her own style. This is merely a guess on my part, but I also think that even though this was being filmed for HBO, the casual, open-armed atmosphere of SoBe, S FL in general, and the fact that she was just starting to hit her stride in her stand up career and become known, she felt comfortable enough to dress however the hell she liked. And good for her! Yeah, when she did come out "officially" unfortunately she did face some pretty nasty backlash which is really sad, because it's not like it affected her ability to be genuinely funny, but she stood her ground with dignity and grace, rallied and came back swinging, better than ever. I've never seen Ellen do standup before, but I dig her style. A lot of people (Girls especially these days, but some guys too) tend to go really loud or over the top with the voice or performance, but I like how understated and clever her set was.
