On this episode of Coyote’s Backyard, the team sets off to explore the tide pools of Southern California with fans Aiden and Dylan in an attempt to build an amazing tide pool aquarium!
Building a tide pool aquarium can be a fun way to spend the afternoon along the shore while searching for sea creatures. All you need is a small plastic container, some fresh sea water, and a keen eye to spot the well camouflaged marine life beneath the surface. While often challenging to find more than a couple species in a day this activity can be a fun way to learn about different marine habitats and all the cool animals that call them home.

Coyote is actually quite amateur in teaching about wildlife. He and his crew do research prior to going out looking for animals. They all went to film school and have little knowledge of wildlife. What makes it exciting is that Coyote does crazy stuff with animals for views.

Wouldn't that "aquarium" put some animals in dangerously close contact with each other? Also, would've loved to see each animal being released back into the wild at the end. I feel like that's the one thing missing from this.

Nah, Coyote might seem dangerously big compared to those two other specimens, but he's actually usually pretty harmless

That reminds me of a time when I was younger and we went boating around Vancouver Island. There was a little shack where they had a very shallow but spacious tank (so that kids and whoever was there could touch the creatures in it), and when I was there, there were tons of little sea creatures, including a bunch of small crabs and then a porcelain crab. I just remember this porcelain crab chasing the smaller crabs and grabbing one of them with his pincers (and keep in mind that this crab was only slightly bigger than these other small crabs) and he just began to rip him in half and dig inside of him for a snack, it was so cool.

Wow, I would have loved doing that as a kid. I bet that Coyote dude either is or will be a great Dad for some adventurous kid(s). It was fun to see what they found. I especially liked that Brittle Star - it really did look like an extraterrestrial. I had no idea they had such cool creatures like that octopus and Black Sea Hare in the L.A. tidepools. Their ecosystems there seem pretty healthy still; I hope they stay that way.
