About the Spear from Java at 10:30, it looks like the axis of the thrust would still be down the haft of the spear, so it could still be used effectively. I think the curve would either be used to encourage a slicing or chopping motion, and would act as a guard to keep the target from sliding down the shaft.
It was either designed that way to fill a ceremonial role, a try-piece from an experimenting smith, or as a practical joke one person played on another. Never underestimate the human desire to insult each other.

That training changed my mind on spears drastically. I hoped a bit you talk about them, too. They would fit in the video and you have today very accurate training programs for Yari.

The Pointy Stick! Although my spear is far from expensive, it is a distant far cry from a mere pointy stick. It cost all of $50 US with free delivery from Kennesaw. I bought the 6 ft White Waxwood shaft for $20 and a 1065 carbon steel spear blade that can double as a dagger in a pinch if the shaft were to break for all of $30. The blade holds a good edge and will cut just about anything. It's a socketed leaf blade style. I've found that 1055 to 1065 carbon is a great mix between durability and edge retention for "rough use" blades.
