    Rico. I liked your style in making kefir. More scientific in terms of closed lid and not cloth cover since it’s anaerobic. Do not know tho if all of the organisms are really anaerobic. I have not done it . Thinking about it doing it. So good watching both your YT abt this . What is really good kefir grain for start up?

    Also do you know how long it’d take to double the grains?

    Hi Marlene,
    Researching Kefir and watching your videos, very good thank you for sharing them. I do have a question, do you know approx calorie / carb content of homemade kefir? It seems pretty high on the commercial products. When I get grains I will do a 2nd ferment....or add berries for flavoring but if I kind of have a basic idea if what I'm starting with nutrition wise would be great as I'm trying to become healthier and must watch what I consume.
    Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and experience. Looking forward to getting started soon.

      Deana Canfield Hi!! Thank you Deana for your comment and question... frankly most any fermented foods are low in carbs and no i dont know calories. That is not something i watch too closely bc i am more interested in feeding my body caloric dense foods. Means foods that are high in nutrient value and benefit to my body such as fermented foods... MY body needs these foods to function well then i build my other foods i eat around that foundation. Just this morning I got an email from Donna Schwenk.. it talked about how low carb fermented foods are, aka Kefir being one of those i will try to link it here below for you... when making milk kefir the grains change the milk, they are fed by the sugars in the milk just as they would in a say a veggie etc they eat the sugars and convert it to nutrient dense food. Research this out, Donna’s website is a good place to start and with this article.. Fermented foods are pretty miraculous!! If I cant copy/paste link here then go to her website and search for the article its titled as. LOW CARB CULTURED FOODS www.culturedfoodlife.com/low-carb-cultured-foods/

    Hi Marlene. Just started making Kefir three weeks ago. So far everything going great. I dont mind drinking the Kefir as it is. My wife doesn't like the taste . I put a good drop of fresh orange juice with the Kefir in her glass and she enjoys that. Will she still get the same goodness from the Kefir drinking it like that ? Oh Marlene can i drink to much Kefir. I really like it. Thanks for your great video. Ive learnt a lot.🍺

      @Marlene2525  Před 7 lety

      +William Crawford Thank you & so glad you found my video and it provided info you were seeking. As far as your wife not liking taste of kefir... if she likes it with a bit of orange juice and will drink it then great... you can also do what is called a 2nd ferment w/ kefir.. after the 1st ferment of 24-48 hrs then you put in it quart canning jar and add some fruit... or peel of an orange with out the white pith you can use a vegetable peeler.. let it sit on kitchen counter for 1-4 hours taste and if she likes taste then its dont put in fridge to consume.. if she wants stronger taste then leave on counter 1-2 hrs longer... the 2nd fermenting provides more nutrients b vitamins etc.... it really enhances the flavor AND THE BEST PART is 2nd ferment makes it more mild in flavor it takes out that bitter sour taste well most of sour taste.... i will point you to a great resource i use all the time.. Donna Schwenk's Cultures for health book its about 10.00 on amazon right now.

    hi Marlene it's Jeremy Lee. Everything has been going great with all my other keifer's that I've done I have built up a very large amount of kefir grains so I took from my last batch and just used directly from that jar into another jar about a full cup of kefir grains and poured in a little bit over a half a gallon of milk kefir dit for 48 hours and it seems to have more of a buttermilk taste not as much effervescent sintang is it still good to you think I just filtered it today period I smell nothing bad but it did not have the overall yeast smell that it normally has as well it was quite very low on older but the flavor was completely different more like I said buttermilk flavor so is the is it under keyford do you think or over keyford being that I used so many grains any information would be appreciated thanks a lot. And thanks for the starting grains to begin with we've been having a blast with them thank you so much

      Jeremy lee yes they are different strains of probiotics that you get from fermented veggies, kefir and kombucha, water kefir etc.. they each have different probiotics... in Donna Schwenk's book that i share about in my LONGER 20 min kefir video she talks throughout the. Book about the Trilogy.. the 3 fermented foods one needs to consume, kefir, fermented veggies and kombucha to provide our bodies w/ full spectrum of probiotics our guts need so yes go and enjoy pickles and add kefir then add kombucha at some point too.. INvest in her book i show you in my first video... an awesome resource of recipes how tos and just great info.... she has 2 books and i recomend her 2nd one which i share in my other video.

      Raw milk is preferred as it contains more nutrients. Then its pasteurized but you cannot use ultra-pasteurized milk as there are no nutrients left and your grains will die due to lack of food.

      @Marlene2525  Před 7 lety +1

      One Fine Day you did nothing wrong... sounds like it kefir'd perfectly.... in process of kefiring often the milk will separate and you will see clear liquid, whey and then clumpy milk and it looks like something gone wrong.. nope that process of kefiring... now it wont always do that... kefir is living thing and it changes w/ seasons.. meaning if its hotter where you are at it may do that w/in 24 hrs or its winter and it will be thicker... AND YES it will be sour smelling that is kefir smell... all you do i leave grains in for 24-48 hrs strain them and as you strain them you will see the curds an whey will blend back together and be as one... my kefir have separated for months now especially if i let them go longer than 48 hrs... it just get more tart the longer they go... no harm i use it to make my smoothies so it doesn't bother me its tart i add other things that sweeten it up a bit... in PNW its been cold long rainy winter and my kefir separates it normal.
