Why England & Southgate Will FLUKE It Again?! England vs Switzerland Tactical Preview

  • Sure, England’s team is littered with superstars, but that doesn't change the fact that they were seconds away from elimination against Slovakia on Sunday. Still, the performances have been well below par for England and the only solace that Southgate will take so far from this tournament is that they’re in the quarterfinals without having played well. At all. The opposite can be said for Switzerland who have been excellent under Murat Yakin. The Swiss dismantled Italy in the last 16 and their fluid attacking system of Rieder, Embolo and Vargas buzzing around ahead of Freuler, Xhaka and wing backs Ndoye and Aebischer pushing forward too has been brilliant to watch. Switzerland won’t be favourites with the bookmakers for this game but anybody who has watched them at this tournament knows they are in much better form than England and they look solid defensively too with Akanji, Schar, Rodriguez and Sommer having incredible tournament experience. Here is my tactical preview for tomorrows game...

    I'd go with Saka at left back with the instruction that the defence become a back 3 in possession and the two midfielders screen. We need some outswinging crosses from the left, although that would make sense if Toney or Watkins were playing up front. Gordon to stretch, I don't mind Palmer on the right because he is intelligent enough to at least occupy the right half space and drag the full back out, even if he doesn't run past him. It shifts the oppo back line to the side and gives an opportunity for a gap to appear for a through ball

    I have a feeling Southgate will start Trippier and Walker again as they are more defensive minded. Part of me thinks he might even start Gallagher again as he is also more defensive. In fact if theres ever any decision between two players as to who Southgate will start just expect the more defensive player to start as thats what he does. Its going to be a complete shitfest of football but we will win by a single goal or penalties

    Completely agree. I do fear that GS will lack the balls to make a big change that involves dropping Kane, Tripps, Walker, and Foden which could make the system work properly. He will do a half-arsed measure of changing the formation but without dropping big names /favourites and the system and approach will be dysfunctional. It's so annoying knowing that we have the personnel to make big changes and yet he won't do it.

    • @carlrigby9231
      @carlrigby9231 Před 17 dny +1

      Why would he drop Kane? Not sure where the hate comes from. It’s the players job to feed Kane which they don’t do.. People cry about him dropping deep but if he has runners then he’s got effective passing.. Like when he put Trippier through last week.. Kane isn’t the problem.

    Great tactical breakdown as per .But all week, we've been media fed GS going with a back 3. Which suggests he might just match up formation wise with Yakin & the Swiss. Trouble is Yakin's been drilling them for 3 years in this system & they look like a well coached club side, with their fluidity & movement . If megamind GS thinks he can match up with less than a weeks work, then it's trouble all the way. Best case scenario , see extra time & pens for England.
