  • WOTC is looking to capitalize on the constructed players need for non-rotating formats and they're doing so with a compromise that is Magic The Gathering Foundations
    Let's talk about how if implemented well, this could actually be the best thing that happens to Constructed magic?

    It's weird to say, but Pioneer is the new Modern. Standard is now Pioneer and dare I say it, but it definitely feels like Modern has, in a way, become Standard.
    It may not be every set, but every summer with the new direct to Modern products, Modern rotates.

    Does this not just feel like a core set being brought back without it taking up a set slot every year? Feels like a good idea overall as Core Sets used to set the tone for the format's power level quite well.

    I’m most interested in having a product that is easy to teach new players with. Starter Kits are decent for a couple games, but a whole set designed to get newer players in sounds much more interesting. If this remains the “core set” for five years too, one can hope that the price for packs stays fairly low, making it good for teaching limited.

    Foundations sounds really dope. Recently got back into Modern through MH3 and its honestly their own world similar to legacy. 90% of top decks utilize cards from MH sets or print to modern sets (disregarding mana base), at least for standard foundations you expect a shift of cards for your existing deck and not an entirely new meta like modern is going through.

    The "at least until 2029" isn't "this set rotates out in 2029", it's "We can't see the future, and we don't know how it will go over, we *want* this to be a set of standard staples that are always in print and available to players in standard, but the future is uncertain."
    It isn't a new format, it's a Core Set 2.0. Rather than printing a different core set every year, it's one set, the same set, that is in print as a constant list of cards players will always have available to them in standard.

A bunch of this gets cracked, than it’s either going to be so powered that it warps the format for 5 years and makes the other new sets not as important, or it will just sit on shelf’s and maybe a new player buys it but honestly it will still be better for newbys to buy singles.

    Standard player and enjoyer here. This idea is not new for Magic: Arena players, because the Bo1 Standard pre-Alchemy had non-rotating cards, some of them are powerful others are bread and butter. They broke with this with Alchemy, but they still legal allways there.
    This is not a change to Standard Non-rotating, but more than a way to make Standard a better first entrance, as this anouncement and the explanations with they begun. The 3 standard rotation cycle is on since... I think the last 2 or 3 sets too.
    About the 4cost Wrath, right now in Standar there are 2, but with a problem. One of them makes the player with multicolor creatures draw a card, while the other makes the player with most creatures Investigate. The first is going to rotate this month. But one of those without downside is a huge difference.
    They said during the panel that the new Planeswalkers are classic, classic as never seen before and new characters. I am sure by the revealed cards (enchantments referencing Eldraine and Jace, Theros, the cat being clearly from Innistrad) and the things explained, that will cover many planes, and potentially moments of the Magic's continuity.

    Honestly I hate it. For me having cards being legal more time in standard is a bad thing, it centralizes deck construction and pushes new cards out of the format, like why would I play Bramble familiar or llanowar loamspeaker if I can just play llanowar elves? Just like Sheoldred pushed almost all black 4-drops out of the format and there is a lot of people tired of her already but even worst because Sheoldred's rotation was pushed 1 year, foundations is gonna be legal 5 years plus. I predict a lot of people will become tired of seeing the same cards after the 2nd year I know that at least I'll be.

  • @lorpuz4664
    @lorpuz4664 Před 6 dny +1

    My train of thought with this product is a way for them to have the core of the standard decks outside of the standard sets. That way the "standard sets" can have more wierd/powerfull cards for commander or other formats and Will sell better and probably requiere "less" playtesting for them. With foundations i'm, every set can "feel" like an horizons set in power lvl without trully taking away from the core of standard. What i think Will end up happening is that the more sets are printed into standard less cards from foundations Will be played in it; out of sheer powercreep in the sets. It might be a little pesimistic and i like the sentinent and hope You have. But i have seen the Game trying to print money to much lately.

    This is a very confusing set design. At first, it feels like the old Core Sets (and before they talked about new cards being in it, I thought they were going back to the old school old school core sets), where it's basically the staples of Standard. But then they start talking about drafting with it, which was never a thing that Wizards really seemed to think was worth hyping with the Core Sets, even if they were technically draftable.
    But how is this going to rotate? Are they going to keep printing this set until 2029, and then it's just going to stop being a thing? Is there going to be a Foundations 2 released in 2029? Either way, does that make buying a Foundations pack a silly thing to do as a Standard player in 2028?
    And we already have a record number of Standard-legal cards right now. Is this just going to bloat that number even more? Part of me wonders if this was originally part of a plan to shift all the expansion sets to Aftermath size and have this supplement the Standard environment as basically all the commons. And if so, are they still going forward with that?

  • @DannyOE4
    @DannyOE4 Před 6 dny

    I honestly feel like WotC is no different from EA, Blizzard, etc when it comes to just finding ways to turn players into payers without regard for if the game is actually good or fun for the majority. It's being littered with "microtransactions" in the form of play boosters, set boosters, draft boosters, collector's boosters, secret lairs (which are literally just cosmetic skins for cards that already exist). All I see are loot boxes in my eyes for a game that's already extremely expensive to get into for the casual gamer. They can market their products as an easy way for players to enter into specific formats easier or just to get into magic at all, but it's always just a money grab and I don't trust companies like this anymore. To top it off, they completely cater to Commander in every single product they release, whether it's marketed for Modern or Standard which only serves to further this invasive species to the game that's all but killing off every format that used to exist. Which is all a big reason why I love Pauper so much. No format can come close to the accessibility for entry that also has game play more dependent on skill rather than slamming the new hot busted mythic rare(looking at you, Nadu). Unfortunately, no matter what format you choose, the player-base and tournament support just isn't really there anymore outside of Commander and I wouldn't be surprised if they just cut the cord on constructed all together at some point in the future. This Foundations set is most likely going to be filled with Commander staples and cards designed for multiplayer in general("each opponent" vs "target player") oh and not to mention probably at least 50 new and old legendary creatures.

    Having a now very literal Core Set isn’t a terrible idea. But for what we’re having coming up is just eroding even more of my hope. The game has no identity, we’re becoming Fortinite where we have a story but people don’t care about it and as such it’s low effort and in the background. They cater every product to Commander because they know people will just buy it, and a lot of those cards could possibly be changed just so they can make them more compatible with Arena’s spaghetti code so the card could be made worse in either direction cause of that. Seeing the Nyx stuff on Enchantments makes it look a lot less special, Omniscience and Llanowar Elves and another board wipe for Standard to deal with just doesn’t sound fun. Standard is now worse to deal with, but that’s just because Standard is now getting Commander grade cards printed directly into it, and they’re trying to make Standard stuff for everyone and not just standard. It’s turned Standard into what Modern felt like, and now Modern feels like what High Level Commander used to feel like. Formats are speeding up because they’re stepping up the power far too often. Modern had random breakout new stuff from Standard and that worked, not everything good in Modern was good in Standard, but that’s what was cool about it. Now it’s all about buying the most expensive cards that they push the power level for. Am I the only one who feels like they’re catering to one single audience, and ignoring the rest of us? They haven’t even tried to support Local Game Stores. The Baldur’s Gate draft was the last one I can think of and it was the first one I’d seen in a long time. All the older formats don’t matter if you don’t have a place to play, and you can’t get everything physically depending on your WPN store level and all. I’d hate to hear about more stores closing while WOTC keeps chugging along, making more stuff hoping the Line goes up.

    I'm fine with WOTC taking a totally different direction with Standard and Pioneer because I find both of them currently unplayable.

    Just wait until they announce a competitive replacement for commander that is modern and newer sets. Go bye RL prices.

      They basically tried that with Brawl and the community overwhelmingly rejected it. At least in paper

      @AZombieWizard I'll say it, we the community should've given it a chance with how stale commander is getting

    The destruction of modern and devaluation of decks, the extended toxic repetitive standered and the constant fire hose of products is why I am selling evening I have and not playing magic any more. They constant reprinting the warped and destroyed the normal resale value of cards that every trading card game has and the increase of lik 1 commander set and 4 standered sets to over 20 sets and products a year is why I am done with this game after 6 years

    They could've just kept Core sets and slightly scaled up the power. I just don't get what the heck they are doing....
