  • Everyone should experience at least one weekend in a VW T2 Camper Van and thanks to companies like classic-campervans.co.uk you can. We took their 2007 Danbury converted Brazilian built air cooled T2 called 'Molly' out for a tour around both the East Sussex and Kent coastlines and had a ball. Literally everyone, young and old, who walked past wanted to admire, touch and find out more. This was the motoring equivalent of getting a puppy and so definitely comes highly recommended. I just bought a 1980 Westfalia and am currently living in it. I've never been so excited about life while only having the small number of possessions that fit in my van!

      Sheraton Welch Sometimes we mention commitment to the cause but I think you win. Yes living in a T2 would make you think twice about buying more stuff. Well done. True commitment to the cause. Matt,

    One of the best camper vans ever built. I can attest to that!

    Nice! I have a 1978 Westy that I am restoring. Wish we Americans here in the "Land of Free" were truly free enough to buy whatever we wanted to drive i.e. cars/trucks/vans from around the world. Would be nice to buy a European car that gets good mileage all while looking interesting and getting good mileage. Here small generally means cheap.

    I saw a video clip of the 2013 Brazilian VW Kombi, and the engine made hardly any sound. What's the difference between this one and the 2013 Kombi engine?
    This one is making a lot more sound.

      Around 2005 the Brazilian T2s moved from a 1.6 air cooled flat four, like the one in the video. To a 1.4 water cooled engine taken from the VW Fox. The latter is much quieter. Matt.

      @tamerlane7 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ClassicCarsDriven Ah ok. I'm a novice when it comes to cars. Can I ask you a question. If suppose someone buys an older version of VW T2, and replaces the engine to a 1.4 water cooled VW Fox engine, will that older version vehicle also become quiet as in the latter ones?

    • @ClassicCarsDriven
      @ClassicCarsDriven  Před 2 lety +1

      @@tamerlane7 No problem. Quite a bit of work to fit one, radiator at the front etc. but yes in theory would name it much quieter. 😀

    • @tamerlane7
      @tamerlane7 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ClassicCarsDriven Actually the reason I was wondering if it was possible was because the later versions of the VW T2 are very expensive. So I thought if I bought a classic one which would be a lot more cheaper, and spent a few thousand pounds on it, and put in that vw fox engine, then I could make the engine quieter, then that would be my only realistic chance of doing that. I can't afford to buy it for £30k plus.
      The reason for doing that might sound a bit silly, but I actually love my music on while driving, therefore that quieter engine would be the best option for me :)

    Would be nice if Danbury did a version with the Subaru Boxer Diesel installed in it !!!

    I hired one in the UK - was spotless - BUT - when I got it - it had just come out from getting a reconditioned engine...... work was very shoddy that was done on it, I don't think it had been tested first. Loose fan belt , engine kept stalling when I stopped, had to keep revs up on accelerator...... and tracking was way off...... I could not get above 40 mph without it pulling to the left... and going down hill had problems getting to a lower gear. I love these units but guess I got mine at the wrong time as the actual driving was a nightmare for me... I never even got a return on my money paid. as I had to cut short my trip for two days. The guy who dealt with the firm wasn't even around when I handed it back. Lesson learnt - test drive first before handing money over...... it has put me off hiring one again.

    Would be nice to have a small turbo diesel four door pickup truck i.e. Toyota Hi-Lux or the GM or Ford equivalent. 30+ mpg. Or a 30+ mpg TDI Eurovan. Or one of these Danbury conversions - even without the camper conversion. I'm okay with the air pollution upgrades necessary to get it clean enough but let me decide if I want to drive an old safety tech vehicle like a VW Transporter. Nope, my nanny gov't keepers say I can't. I could however go buy a motorcycle. Ugh!

    The video would have been better if a noise-canceling microphone, placed close to the driver had been used. The camera mic picked up far too much road and engine noise.
