  • The #vwt2 or #baywindow turned the Volkswagen #camper into a truly global phenomenon. This video celebrates the history of the #volkswagenT2 that was built in some form, somewhere in the world, for an incredibly 46 years.
    There's more detail on the T2 and all other VW Transporters and their campers in the book of the channel - "VW Campers for Beginners". Check out print and e-book versions on AMAZON - bit.ly/vwcampersforbeginners
    This video uses great archive photos and video courtesy of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, to recall some amazing and sometime surprising developments of the model whose giant curved windscreen led to it being known affectionately as the #bay window.
    The Bay remains hugely popular for campervan conversion - but who remembers the all-electric T2 Volkswagen of 1972, whose underfloor battery weighed more than a Volkswagen beetle. Or, the experimental all-wheel drive Bays that were a technical success but judged a little ahead of their time and weren't put into production. Our video includes beautifully restored T2 Transporters filmed at V-dub events throughout the UK - and charts the developments of the Bay in Mexico and Brazil which continued long after the popular van ceased production in its native Germany.
    Our thanks to RB Motorhomes of Darley, North Yorkshire, for the opportunity to film a rare water-cooled Bay, converted into a campervan by Danbury - giving the classic look of a vintage Bay, but with mod cons including power steering.

    I had a 1970 van back in 1980 and loved it. I also had many bug's since then. My son and I found a 69 Ghia that we saved from the car crusher. We are working on it now hoping to get it running, and driving. We want to get it on the road and enjoy the ride 👍

    The Type 2 featured here was originally known as the "Clipper".
    After a while (difficult to say - a couple of years) B.O.A.C. contacted VW and told them to desist from using that term because it was, and is, their call-sign. If necessary they would take the matter further.
    The term "Clipper" was dropped, and the American "Bay Window" seemed to take over (Boo!).

    Great video , but wasn’t a T1 a beetle , T2 a splitty/Bay and then it was a T25 which was then followed by a T4 ,T5 etc ?

    • @Thecampervanchannel
      @Thecampervanchannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Excellent. A chance for me to be ultra nerdy! I'm pretty sure the Beetle was the VW "type 1" and the Transporter (all models) was the VW "type 2". The Transporters "T" numbers (presumably short for Transporter) were not used until there were several generations and folks used T1, T2 etc to differentiate them. Unless anyone knows different !!!!

    I have a question, around 4:20 ish, you say that the older t2, are from 1967, and that early bays have low lights mounted near the bumper, but I own a t2 westfalia with high mounted blinkers, bumper with the step, oval rear lights with the reverse light being a little square above, is it possible that the very very first ones had high mounted blinkers or is there something else I don't know? great video

    • @s.13.ramirez
      @s.13.ramirez Před 2 lety

      @@Thecampervanchannel all the legal paperwork says that it's a 1964, but clearly that's wrong, so I don't have a specific year, at a Vw meeting, a guy told me that everything was early bay, the air intake, the logo size, rear lights, bumper, handles... but the front blinkers are late, so I have no idea, just the blinkers are late because the late bays have a smaller logo and different headlights but mine has the early ones so I think mine is a little Frankenstein

    • @Thecampervanchannel
      @Thecampervanchannel  Před 2 lety

      @@s.13.ramirez That's very strange - particularly being registered in 1964 - at least three years before the T2 was launched! I'm no expert - but guess the legals have been messed up at some point and maybe, just maybe, your early bay has had a new front end at some point? Very interesting though. Thanks for posting.

      @@Thecampervanchannel just the blinkers are changed, but there's no mark or "holes" were the early ones were at some point, but yeah, I am so in love with the uniqueness that it has, and honestly I prefer how it looks that way, thanks for answering, really loved your video!

    CAN YOU HELP?. Okay, so I live in the US. Connecticut to be specific. Getting interior camper cabinets are nearly impossible here. Most are in California and if you find them many people won't ship them. SO< Ive called all over the planet literally and Im trying to find the headbanger, corner closet, and sink/stove combo unit for our 76 Westfalia. As for the sink stove unit, there are MANY on Ebay that are being sold that would be perfect- NEW ones, but it says ships Global shipping program which none of the companies seem to know what or how that works. That all said, any ideas on who and where I can get these units from?. Thank you for listening. Love the channel thanks.
