Sorry to correct you but the ‘H’ control does not adjust the heater. It only diverts the heat when pulled and activates the fan when twisted. The heat is turned on and off by a tap at the rear of the engine block.

Due to the BABVVO and TEBBVO laws, all petrol cars will unfortunately soon be banned from public streets in the EU, CH USA and Scandinavia :-( In Germany, the Green People's Party has given the order to shorten the fuel supply from 2025 by reducing all conventional gas stations to just one state-run central gas station per city or county Now they even want to slow down all gas pumps by 20 liters per minute to 2 liters per minute... From 2027, some car spare parts will also be banned in the EU... such as exhaust systems, turbochargers and even some engine and gearbox oils. .. California and New York will do the same from 2027... So no more investing in petrol cars... They even created a new type of crime here called emissions and smoke crime . "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbotsverordnung" BABVVO in Germany and HESCHLAVVO in Switzerland.

By 1983 most of the rusr issues had been beaten on the Alfasud and aggressive pricing made one the same price as a Ford Escort. You could buy a 1.5 Ti for the same as an Escort 1.6 GL, but with a vastly better driving experience and a feeling you were driving something more exclusive. My English teacher had two and never went back to other makes.

I knew a hotelier who owned a 1980 Silver Shadow who said the fuel consumption in heavy traffic could dip below 10 mpg, but on the open road 14 mpg was possible. For town trips, he used a small Toyota, but the Rolls Royce was used for long journeys as he said the comfort, ride quality and silence from the engine was unbeatable and the car would outlive him.

Although you mentioned the steering, you said, was woolly, it should not have been. In 1983 when they moved over to the squared shoulder low profile metric tyres , it upset the feel in the steering , as the original geometry was better with the 70 series profile tyres. The steering on the earlier cars was a revelation whereas you could steer on the throttle with tremendous feedback , no vicious kick or FWD fight etc. I still don’t any FWD car that matches the throttle response, steering feel, powerful brakes , nice gear change , with a firm yet quality ride as the Alfasud had in its day. The engine too, isn’t praised enough , all the accolades going to the V6 or inline twin cam whilst well deserved , the little flat 4 boxer giving that trademark Alfa rasp to the exhaust , yet being refined at cruising at high speeds . The motoring press at the cars launch in the early/ mid 1970s , found it incredible that a little single carburettor 1200cc engine could seem so unstressed even cruising at 90mph plus .❤

Saab decided that for safety reasons to put the ignition in the floor, a box lock as opposed to the steering column lock . This eliminated the chance of the leg being struck by it in a major collision.
